  • How to Make an Impact in the World

Several years ago I flew across the country from Virginia Beach to Bend, Oregon to join 120 entrepreneurs for the Start-Up Camp Summit, a conference put on by Dale Partridge for a 1-day summit about entrepreneurship, leadership, and making a difference in the world.

I expected to learn something new, to stretch myself, but what I did not expect was to leave trying to answer the question most of us secretly whisper to ourselves- do I have what it takes to make a real impact in the world? Read on to see what I discovered as I listened to the Founder of Charity Water.

The summit included three speakers (Dale Partridge, Scott Harrison, and Jennifer Smith). Dale is the author of People Over Profit and serial entrepreneur who started TheDailyPositive and StartupCamp.com but has since moved on to writing faith-based books and helping others plant house churches. Jennifer Smith is the author and founder of TheUnveiledWife.com and book The Unveiled Wife- she speaks to and offers thoughtful, and honest stories and inspiration on marriage. And Scott Harrison who was the first to speak is the CEO who founded Charity Water. Today, I am focusing on Scott’s talk.

Charity Water was founded in 2006 with a mission that every single person will have access to safe, clean drinking water one day. It is both simple and bold. The mission is enormous and beautiful. His charity also looked to do things differently- to use as much of money to further the cause, not to be put towards overhead. Charity Water looked for ways to do non-profit better.

Scott shared his story- beginning from the time he was a child, and his experiences growing up with his parents. He shared about the life long health battle his mom suffered from because of a company’s negligence and the difficulty his family faced for years because of the health struggles. And he told us about the strong values and faith in his life as he was growing up.

Then he shared with us about his time in New York City and how he spent years partying it up. It was real. It was raw. It was honest. It was the truth he was not afraid to put out there because when we can share the truth- all of it- even the dirty little secrets, and the things that make us feel less than perfect- that is when our humanity comes through. That is when we can relate to each other’s stories.

What struck me was not the raw, honest, and vulnerable words Scott Harrison shared. It was not the rock bottom life he found himself in or even his desire to pull away from his life of sin and destruction after many years of partying into the night as a nightclub promoter. It was what was not said during that hour when Scott shared his story of living a life of partying, drugs, money, a fast lifestyle and his desire to get out -instead, it was the change he experienced that moved him to act in the world for those who could not.

He shared his journey to turn his life around. How he left his life in New York and found himself in a very different place as he volunteered with Mercy Ships and eventually started Charity Water.

His story continued with photos of the conditions people are living in around the world that do not have access to basic things like clean water. And he shared photos of the communities that were changed when charity water drills for water and provides wells in their community, but none of that was what rocked me to the core.

The photos of children and families in villages without water, the diseases harming young children and women brought me to tears that I tried hopelessly to hold back. How could my humanity not be shaken by such images and stories? It was raw and these stories need to be heard. And for most of us in the room, they did bring us to tears and tug on our heartstrings.

But, what rocked me to the core was the idea that we all go through life working to pay the bills, and while many of us look to find our purpose, it struck me that often we focus on ourselves instead of what God calls us to do in his kingdom.

We may ignore the call or the tug to make a difference for weeks, or months or even years before most of us listen for it. Before most of us cannot ignore it anymore and need to move towards it. What shook me was the questions swirling in my head.

I found myself thinking- do we have to hit rock bottom before moving in the world with a new perspective? With sight that allows us to understand how each of us can impact the world because we ask why- Why does it have to be this way? Why can’t something be done about this?

And I knew deep down- It is when our whys move from questions to actions. It’s when our heartache or desire to help moves from our hearts and into our hands and feet. It’s when we take our questions, our heartache and longing for a better way from deep in our thoughts to sharing those questions and ideas with others- regardless of what they might say.

What shook me was the questions and emotions welling up within me. Are we afraid to be so bold? Are we filled with excuses and reasons we can’t act? Have we been programmed to live with blinders on and go about our lives ignoring people and issues all around us? We say we want to help, but at what cost? If it’s inconvenient, or if it’s risky, or unsafe are we the first ones to bail? What will it take for the rest of us to act to see change happen in the world?

Are our kids going to move closer to having an impact in the world and in their communities or further away because they are being brought up in a 24/7, social environment that focuses on likes and profiles, that focus on them not others?

This is when I found myself holding my breath. This is when I realized that we all secretly question- do I have what it takes to do something big? Do I have what it takes to make an impact in the world? Is fear holding me back? What shook me to the core was questioning if I have what it takes to make a real impact in the world?

Then as I let the ideas, the fear and questions out as I began to breathe again, and as the tears trickled down the corner of my eyes in the dark theater surrounded by a hundred other people who were also wiping away the tears, I remembered we do not have to do big things to have a big impact.

We just have to do something and keep moving forward. We only have to be drawn to the things that make us come alive, to the things that tug on our heartstrings or make us cry or angry as hell. We need to remember we are only being asked to be a part of something much bigger and greater than ourselves.

We are being asked to be a part of the body of Christ. We may not all be called on to create a Charity Water but we are all called on to help others in some way, even if the part seems unimportant, or small. Every part has to be played in order for the performance to happen. Every small action is needed in order to get clean drinking water to every person in the world.

“Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice Hospitality.”

    Romans 12:13

As Christians, we are called upon to help others. We are called on to help our families, and our neighbors, and our brothers and sisters in faith. I find it’s easy to allow busyness and our everyday routines to be blinded to the need all around us- for us to ignore the lonely, or hungry, or hurting just beyond our front door.

But as I reflected on Scott’s story and began to question my life and daily habits it became clear while I was helping in small ways, I was capable of so much more but I was not doing more. I’d been using my busyness — work, and children’s schedules, and my to-do-list as excuses. And I’d been putting relaxation and fun before the needs of others. And in that dark theater, I realized I had to make a change in my life. I had to go home and hear the call the Lord has commanded for us to love our neighbors and to help those less fortunate or down on their luck.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

What if Scott did not act on the despair he saw, what if he did not feel moved to do something about it. To at least take the next step each time. He could have stopped moving forward with each question. With each obstacle. With each step. He could have said- I tried. He could have ignored the call to help those who did not have the means to bring water to their villages.

But instead, he questioned why and he moved forward. He wanted to get the water tested- so he did. He wanted to find out why these places don’t have access to clean or nearby water? To figure out if there was a way to solve the problem one village at a time. He did not know how he could help, or how he’d move forward. He surely did not know how he’d pay for such projects but he still moved forward.

So my question to myself and to each of you is this- are you willing to take the next step? It might be donating to Charity Water or giving up your birthday to raise money for a charity that is close to your heart, such as helping women of domestic violence or helping entrepreneurs without resources start making extra money to help their families or helping out through a ministry or at your church.

The way in which you choose to help is up to you but the challenge is- will you step out and find a way to help. And then challenge yourself to put one foot in front of the other and take another step? Will you challenge yourself to keep moving forward to be the change in the world? To be helping hands. Even if the act, donation or time seems small it has a great impact.

Go find your way to move forward. For me it’s many things like volunteering in my neighborhood, and local schools, through fellowship and donating to church organizations and the many organizations I feel moved to donate to. It is in finding my way to help others through small actions, and gestures and working towards finding my ministry or those ministries I feel called to be a part of in bigger ways over the coming years.

And by writing and speaking to others to encourage them in the world, whether it’s the impact they are making in their homes or beyond their doors in their neighborhoods or across borders. I’d love to hear how you are making an impact in the world. No act is too small to have a great impact on someone’s life.

Let Your Faith be Bigger than Your Fear.

If you are interested in learning more about Scott Harrison’s story- his book about his life and running Charity Water came out last Fall- it is called Thirst and is available on Amazon and other booksellers.

  • A PHOTOGRAPHER, AND A GOD SIZED DREAM

    Finding God in Our Purpose

I was 12 when I dreamed of becoming a National Geographic Photographer one day.  Somewhere in childhood that dream was pushed to the side and forgotten.  But as I became a mom and held a camera in my hands, and as our phones morphed into cameras we carried with us all the time, I found myself obsessed with taking photographs every day.  I am the one in the group that captures the event, or people or place everywhere we go.  But life is busy with three sons, and work and everything that comes with a life lived well – so moving towards a craft I love still took a back seat but the desire kept growing.   My desire to use photography and words to tell stories has become deafening today.

The desire to capture life through a lens, to tell a story in a single moment through colors and a frozen moment has been imprinted on my heart for a lifetime.  I didn’t have the words or understanding that my desire to be a photographer was more than a childhood fantasy- it was God whispering to me, you Kristin, have been given a gift, a gift to make art, and your art will have the greatest impact using a camera and words, you will capture the spirit of people, of love, of kindness, of humanity and of miraculous and everyday faith using your camera and descriptions.  It may not be for National Geographic, but I know I was meant to take photographs in this life.

Several years ago I attended Storyline, a conference to encourage and inspire you to live a better story everyday.  Jeremy Cowart spoke the first day of Storyline. He is a professional photographer who has photographed well known musicians, authors, done commercial work and more recently focused his eye towards fine art photography.  He is also an artist, an entrepreneur and a humanitarian. He shared his story through images and words.  His visually narrated journey was vulnerable, honest, and moving.  His story was one of the power of Faith, and resilience, and hope.   The hope that something greater is in store for us.  That we can be the stewards to give others hope and make a difference.

He began talking about his childhood and education. He explained that he was not very good at many things he tried. His aptitude test showed him in the 5-15% for most areas. He told himself, “I Can’t”. Yet his father continued to tell him “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you” Philippians 4:13.

This pattern continued. Jeremy learned he liked painting.  He ended up going to school for graphic design. He continued to have set backs, and jobs that he did not excel at.   What did he do?  He stepped out in faith. He tried new things and something amazing happened. He could. And he began to excel. As he gained exposure he became a well known celebrity photographer. But he did not stop there- he knew life is not about money or fame- it is about the difference we can make.

Jeremy began to use his influence to make an impact in the world.   First through photographing people who have never had a photograph taken of them through an effort he created called Help-Portrait, and then by taking photos in parts of the world that needed the light shined on them, on their struggles and of moments and stories that were hard, and difficult but in the end that captured the essence of what faith and love and forgiveness and grace can do in people’s lives, through the Forgiveness Project and capturing the devastating impact of natural disasters to show the need in those areas.

As if that was not enough, Jeremy continued to have bigger God-sized dreams he’s been working on.  One such project is building a hotel called The Purpose Hotel, the first hotel completely founded to fight social injustices and focus on social good through working with nonprofits to outfit the hotel.

What struck me the most about Jeremy is that he was not afraid to share his struggles and his many setbacks with us.  He was willing to share his failures and the role faith had in his life.  And through those struggles and the faith his parents instilled, he began to shine in the world.   He found some success but did not stop, he continued to push himself to find ways to make the world a better place.  To this day, he continues to reinvent himself, to try new techniques with his craft and to go after passions and places he can make an impact in the world, whether near his home or across the world.  What struck me the most is Jeremy is moving in the world as the hands and feet of  faith in action.  I am inspired by Jeremy because his actions remind me of the impact we can have, and that we can keep pushing ourselves in our craft and in the ways we help others.

So I’m looking forward to this conversation. Can you start off with just telling us about your journey as an Olympian and all the other cool things you’ve done up until you launching a brand, you know, beverage brand, and then starting writing books and publishing them and then helping people in their businesses and their personal lives. I was my mom was a music teacher. And so she I did I did the ballet, the violin, you know that will mute piano the whole music and dance kind of thing a little bit. But I just wanted to be outside outdoors because I remember walking by school every day, and so much a private school. So there was a public school that I’d walked by and and they were over there playing softball. I thought that looks like fun. So I finally begged her and she let me start playing and that was it. I was hooked. It was I mean, I played lots of sports. But that was the main sport that I definitely went on to 1996 in the Olympics. And

it’s just an amazing journey. I started playing and I was on the first Junior Olympic team and and there were some issues there. It’s all politics and adults, unfortunately. But I never actually made it there. They kind of I was the winning pitcher, and they wanted me to continue on. But you never know. Maybe it was all meant to be I’m sure it was because years years later, when I was in college, I met a woman who was my coach at Cal Berkeley, and she played for Puerto Rico. And she kind of she was she knew I was kind of in a funk because I was like there was a year I switched from Texas a&m to UC Berkeley. And you have to read sure you know what I mean? And I wasn’t doing anything and I was in a little funk and that was kind of how she was kind of bringing me out of it because ultimately, she wanted me to play cow softball the next year, but she invited me to go back east and and play on the team with her, you know, and I didn’t know it was a tryout but kind of like a tryout and next thing you know I’m on the Puerto Rican national softball team and, and preparing to go to the Olympics. It was supposed to be the Olympics in 88. But then of course in 87 not of course, but 87 it was it was canceled. And so I figured out there’s my Olympic dreams move on right start start your teaching start I was a teacher, I was an administrator. I went into financial planning, and then somewhere in that timeframe

Colorado silver bullets came out, which was the first one’s professional baseball team. And my husband had never seen me play softball, but he knew that I had and he goes, You should go try out for that. So I did. And when I was on the team, one of times we were in Oakland at the Oakland Coliseum. And they were broadcasting a radio show all the way down, that was getting to Puerto Rico. And they heard my name I was Lisa Martinez, my maiden name. And they heard my name and all I wanted to say, one, they call me up and they say, hey, it’s gonna be an Olympics. It was 95. Right? So hey, it’s gonna be in the Olympics. Do you want to play? And I’m like, Uh, okay. So I was like, I thought my Olympic dreams were like, eight, nine years ago, right? Never to come back. But there they were. And I got ready. I had to have shoulder surgery in February of that year, so I wasn’t quite sure I was gonna make it. But I wasn’t able to do anything. But pitch. Normally, I played pitcher outfield, and I would hit and all that, but no, I only was able to go to the, to the mound and pitch. But hey, that’s all that’s all I needed. I got into the Olympics. Amazing experience. We were in Atlanta that year.

Yeah, but just the hard work in and grabbing the opportunity when it does come up. I mean, you know, sometimes people don’t recognize opportunities, or they’re afraid to say yes, and, and you’ve got to give yourself permission, or you’ve got to just grab that opportunity. Because I knew that that was something that I always wanted to do. And it doesn’t always come around once, twice, three times. Oh, my God. I mean, things have happened along the way. But is it you know, because at that time, I was 32, in the at the Olympics, I had a birthday. And, you know, I knew that was probably never gonna happen again. So

amazing. So from there, you I mean, that’s already quite a bit like you said, you were Wait, the story of the Olympics are weaving in and out of your life, and then you actually got to go to the games. So what happened when you got back from the Olympics? And then did you start? Were you an administrator then or what did you step into them? Let’s see, that was 96. So so so I think I stepped into being an administrator right after that. So I was like, Well, I’m old enough. Oh, it was a long time ago. But I think it’s step right into being an administrator. And then I went back into the classroom. But I just, I just kind of knew there was something else for me. And that’s when I started a gentleman that wanted to do some retirement planning for myself. We were talking and he goes, because I was a math teacher, and, you know, numbers person, and he goes, Well, why don’t you do this? And I’m like, Ah, I don’t know. So then I started following around because I was a teacher. So I had to do it on the weekends, or in the evenings and eight classes. And, and, and they kept trying to say they go quit your job, quit your job, you’re gonna be great. You’re gonna be great. And I’m like, No, it was like, hesitant. No, I’ve got, I’ve got my health insurance. I’ve got my in retrospect, I should have liked it a year earlier or something, right. And they will pay you even a salary. You know what I mean? And I said, No, no, no, I’ll just do it my way. I’ll just keep doing it part time.

And then along the way, I got into it full time. And I absolutely love being an entrepreneur. I mean, I loved teaching, and I loved education. I love helping students, and I love how they grow. And sometimes the bureaucracy of the school district or just trying to reach the parents for support. Sometimes that went down. I mean, that’s only some of the things that weigh you don’t as a teacher, but so it was nice to be out on my own. And, you know, you can kind of pick and choose who you work with. You can be that positive person. I’m still teaching, I’m still educating, I’m still helping, but now it’s just in a different arena. But as we went into it, we went on we my husband and I love to go to Hawaii. We’ve been there. I don’t even know how many times different islands. And we were on a trip and we went to Mama’s fish house on Maui. And we were because one of my girlfriends said, Oh, you’re gonna go over here. You gotta go to Mama’s fish house. It’s on the way. So we stopped at Mama’s fish house. And there it was the original Meitei is created from Trader Vic. And we’re like, huh, the restaurant and so we have to try it. So we try it. And my head goes here is you won’t probably like this and I took a sip on it. Oh my god. You know how you get the chills because something is so strong. Why can’t they make a drink? That tastes good. And you still has alcohol but tastes good? I mean, it’s, I mean, I love salsa, and I love spicy food, but we don’t need to burn the throat completely and not get the flavor of the food right? So why can’t we have something that tastes good? And doesn’t alcohol and fun. So that’s how hula girl emerged. We went around all the islands and all the bartenders at that point and trying their favorite drinks and then coming home and doing the same thing and, and that’s how it came about. We launched and we went

I didn’t, I was gonna be talking about hula girl, but we launched it and we got into Bevmo. And we’re moving forward, we were supposed to move on and get some partners along the way that kind of fell apart. And we were going to revamp the brand and maybe make a light version, you know, everybody likes lighter alcohol or lighter calories, right? So, and as we were doing that, just and then things just kind of happened and we kind of stopped the economy went bad. And we were just a little company in this big pool of Jose Corvo, you know, Shawn, Dawn are, you know, all the alcohols, the big boys out there, so we just kind of put it on pause for a while, but we have come back and we are doing it again, we have reformulated and done a what we call a hula girl sparkling spirit, and revamped our brand and logo. But COVID has just it’s just life happens sometimes. It’s sometimes you got to be able to. That’s right, pivot. Success is not a straight line. Sometimes. I mean, it’s never a straight line. I mean, it’s like, it could be like,

until you get there, right? All these weaves in corners. So you’ve got to be able to shift and, and cans, all you know, everything was in a cannon, all of a sudden, people are taking things home. So the cost of the cans, you know, more than double. They were like starting at 15 cents and 20 cents and 25 cents. I mean, at 40 cents, it just kept oh my god and then tried to get linetime If you weren’t Coca Cola, or if you weren’t, you know somebody big. I mean, you couldn’t you weren’t gonna do like 3 million cans or something, you know, that’s like, Ah, okay, well, let’s go ahead. We think we have an awesome brand. We always thought that. So we started off with fashion first. So we’re actually right now in production of our hula girl. Brand flip flops and beach towels and awesome shirts. We’re starting that way first. Yeah. But people has we’ve done that are interested in asking you about the alcohol. So, you know, it may come, it’ll come about it’ll happen along the way. So I’ve been doing that. But

as luck would have it, when the economy did go bad, I did go back into teaching again, before I started teaching, and even prior to that, because let’s go back a step. I, the economy bad. I wasn’t kind of doing anything. I was doing financial planning a little bit. I do taxes this time of year for some of my clients a little bit, but it wasn’t like what I was doing. And so I kind of got a little funk. And we we rescue animals all the time. We always have We have tons of cat dogs around here. But we one of our tenants, we had a rental property. And one of our tenants, literally was checking out on July 5 leaving and we’re given the keys and they’re they had their dog in a crate sitting in the driveway. Do you want a dog? I’m like, we’re thinking, well, you’re going to leave this dog here and you’re not going to take him.

It was we said yes, we’ll take him you know. And next thing you know, I mean, I was I had already found somebody that maybe wanted to, you know, adopt him and the mom was gonna come over the weekend, but she never came. And that was it. He was mine.

He wasn’t mine. And he’s he just kind of saved my life during that time and, and he’s still here usually underneath my desk, but he’s with my husband just in case he got excited and made a wolf I decided to keep out for now. But having been an Olympic athlete, I wanted to do something fun and exciting. And so I said what’s that sport called the dogs do Oh god, you know where the bulls did that loved it Have fun was the best I mean, you bond with your animals but when you do something like a training or an agility or something like that, you can bond even more and let me so I was in I started teaching now so I was doing agility after school and agility tournaments on the weekends you know and but he’s got little then that’s how Max and Marigold the book came about because I wanted to share him well first, I wanted to share him to the world. I was on a going down to the San Diego pride for some in the summertime for some financial planning thing and and I’m looking in it’s like oh tuna melts my heart or you know, it was like a book about this dog and an Instagram and I’m like, I can do that. I can do that ago what is Instagram I made I’m like so getting my phone I was an app and you have to do all these things. It was it was a journey learning all that stuff. 1000 followers 3000 10,000 You know and then on Facebook and so he I just want to share it because as when we drive along. He’s got one year up and one year down. And it’s always like that and he’s always kind of got a smile and he’s always sitting on my lap at stoplights. He’s looking out the window and people are going by oh my god they’re laughing eyes or whatever up and they’re rolling down the window what’s his name and commenting and asking me and talking to me. It’s It’s hilarious. I go you know what he makes people smile. So let’s

Share it just a little step further. So

I didn’t know what I was doing. But I said, I want to write a book, oh, I want to write a children’s book, oh, I want to write a chapter book I’m not going to do I don’t draw. So I’m not going to be, you know, a

picture book. Yeah. I said, I can hire somebody to do that. You know, and so I, I created this little fun, exciting adventure, which still incorporated a lot of the things that I’ve been doing all of my life, just positivity determination, you know, just all of the things that you need to fail forward, fast, take that next step, being able to pivot as you would say, you know, because SAS is not a straight line, how we journey you know, through life, if it has its curves and bends and you in and when an opportunities, you know, hits, and there’s like a fork in the road, you got to be able to pivot to that next, you know, fork. So I wrote the book, and I wanted to share an adventure with children, but give them something. And I that was a whole nother journey, trying to go to New York and pitching it to agents and publishers. And I mean, I’ve had, it’s been very interesting, the last five or six years, actually, but

but there was some things that happened along the way there too, right? Things didn’t go as what you wanted. So when I was at an entrepreneur, I was at a conference with other entrepreneurs. My husband had met this gentleman that was a publisher and, and they were just talking and next thing, you know, we’re on the phone with his partner, who did the children’s kind of division and they’re going, Oh, my God, we we love it. I was already looking up some things about you, and we love this book. But you know, you’re gonna need to add a young girl because we’re going to pitch this to school districts because let’s think bigger, I’m like, okay, I can think bigger. So let’s do that. So I pivoted and, and but I had to have their help and re editing everything, because I couldn’t see the forest for the trees. What do you mean, you want to add a character? What do you mean, as like, how do you, you know, I’d already done everything, it was complete my head. So but it was amazing how actually simple it was. And, and we did it. And I’m so excited. It just launched yesterday, on Amazon. Yeah, so that it was it was just fun. And so it was weird. I’ve written three books. So that’s the first one to come out. But we have to re edit and re, you know, vision and release the second and third book. And I thought I was going to do a fourth book and maybe more. And as we’re going along, and COVID happening, and I’m thinking, wow, just nothing’s happening, you know, school districts are shut down. You know, my life isn’t moving where I wanted to, I wanted to, you know, school districts and go speak to children and classroom than share max and the whole thing, because he’s not getting any younger. He’s gonna be 12 in May. Yeah. And when I started, this was probably it was like, only eight or something and nine, and I’m like, okay, he’s a little dog. He’s gonna make it we’re gonna get there. But. But as we’re going along, I’m thinking, when I went and talked to some of the

agents, and publishers originally to pitch my book, a couple of them said, Well, hey, if you have a story about a young girl, being you know, wanting to play softball and wanting to go to Olympics, you write that one and you come back to me, I’ll remember you and I’m like, okay, so go, do I really want to do that. I don’t want to do a memoir, I kind of started writing a memoir. And I’m like, I want to do that either. So the next thing you know, it’s just it kind of just evolved through this whole thing is

how do you become unforgettable? How do you move forward in your life? How do you become that that person that is that maybe that shining light or that positivity for other people to help other people even move forward? And then it was like, Well, I don’t really want to make it a nonfiction book. It’s just like another thing out there. So I, it was we weave the story into it to make it fun and a little exciting and, and maybe a little romance in there. Not a lot, but

you know, but it was, it was fun. That was a fun experience. I think I’m done for writing for right now. Because you’ve got to focus coming back to all of this you’ve got to focus on one thing at a time i know i doing a lot of different things. But I’m I’ve lived a long enough life already. I’ve you know, I’ve spent my time but I know that I can get

great ideas in my head and I can distract myself. So the thing that I have to do is you really need to focus on, you know, maybe one or two things at a time. Get that done. So my focus, I’ve just been on it and on the people that are supposed to be helping me you know, let’s get going. Let’s get this. You know, these books out so I focused on that and they’re done. Now my next focus is to

    launch my five

brings of success webinar and in all the things that go that way to, you know, get my foot out there to start slowly, sharing with everybody,

that those kind of mindset skills and positivity and all the things that you need to do to move forward.

I love that. And yes, so much. But to your point, you weren’t doing you’re not doing all these things at one time. Like you said, some of them can overlap, of course, but you know, you weren’t in a limp. You weren’t doing your sports and Olympic athlete timeframe, when you were writing the books when you were, you know, doing the financial planning and launching Hulu girl, right. So, like you said, each of those is taking you on a journey, and some of them can overlap. But you have to like you just said, you have to pause some of the things or have someone else helping with them, so that you can then finish the next project or launch the next brand or release the next book, or whatever it might be, you know, so I think that is an important point to make that we can do lots of things, but we have to have one kind of running or know that it’s not our main thing right now, and then step into, you know, the time it’s going to take to get to the next project. So one thing I want to ask you is,

I think one thing that you have gotten really good at is kind of having a vision for what you want to accomplish, or at least what you want to accomplish next, or in the next timeframe, right. But a lot of people I think we get stuck, especially for solopreneurs, or small business owners, we get stuck sometimes in such the daily production, you know, trying just to run something or build something that we don’t maybe revisit, is our vision big enough, you know, is it? Is it really our big vision for life or for our brand or company? And then how do we how often should we revisit that? And are we what are we assessing it against? How are you making sure that whatever we’re putting out in the world is what we want it to be? And that we’re not hiding, if you will, or we’re not playing too small. So what would you share with us about that? Well, I’m looking at a vision board that I’ve created. And I did every I mean, and I made my students I taught high school, my most recent, I just retired, because a lot of things have happened, my mom broke her hip, and just a lot of things have happened in the last six to 12 months.

Which caused a few things, but

I make my students do a vision board a dream. For them. I used to call it dream it wishes, do it something like that. And, and I would make them go through the steps that would make them write things about themselves. Like pick the word that most describes you. And if there’s more than one word, you can write out the words but you know, focus on that. And it’s amazing. It’s amazing what comes out. And then you know, it can be stick figures, you don’t have to be an artist and I said, Look, I don’t draw, I said I can put words down are all Google picture. And I’ll print it out and paste it on there. I said, or it could be real life photographs. So if you want to become and some it was amazing what came out, they want to be a teacher, this is their hobby, they wanted to be a photographer, I’m going to do this job first. But I’m going to be a photographer, you know, on the side. But ultimately, that’s going to be my business. It was just, it was amazing what comes out. And you have to see it. I mean, I see it, I walked by it, I can see it from my desk right now, what’s going on. And, you know, I might need to change one or two things on there. Because that’s not my vision anymore. I had hurt my bad been an athlete all my life. And then so I’ve kind of torn up my body with all things that I’ve done and, and I was playing tennis. That’s how I met my husband.

And we play tennis, we played competitively.

And they got to a point where I couldn’t even play tennis anymore. And that’s wasn’t my dream board start playing tennis. And that’s fine. It still might be on there. But it’s not. It’s not the dream anymore. Because what had happened over the time. And I started to mention this earlier to you is I started ballroom dancing.

And what an amazing thing. It’s something I just I watch Dancing with the Stars, I do a fun thing and what was wanting to take dance lessons and I couldn’t quite get my husband to do it because he’s so into tennis. And if it’s a choice between two for exercise, I’m gonna like tennis. Okay, so, and then I just did this several years. This is many years actually, we’ve been married 26 years already. So I mean, this is off and on over the years, I’ve been wanting to do things and and this is one of those things that just kind of got put by the wayside. And I had a coach and mentors and, and one of them said, just get my permission because as I mentioned briefly, my mom had fractured her knee last May. And that was minor. We got her over, you know, and then and then but we still need to take care of her. And then she broke her hip. And that was just, oh my goodness, that was a whole experience. And so the stress levels were going up and I’m supposed to be doing

All these things, watching these books and hind again and in because you’re taking care of a parent, I’m thinking about writing a book about that one, holy moly, you can’t believe some of the stuff that’s happening. But anyway, that’s a whole other adventure. But

one of my mentors said, you know, what, just you need to give some time, you need to find some joy. And I believe that we all need to find that joy and that purpose in our life. And you need to find that joy, because if you’re just, well, you just that monkey is on your back, and everything’s gonna weigh you down. How can you be positive about something, you have to find that one thing that just kind of like that spark inside of you, right? And this gets you going? And for me, that was ballroom dancing. So I called them up. I think I called Arthur Murray up. And I said, Tell me a little bit. Oh, come on down, come get a free lesson. And I did. And then what do you like and enjoy. And next thing, you know, I’m taking, you know, less than once or twice a week. It’s only 45 minutes, but not just loved it. Now, during this time, I was feeling a little guilty because my mom had broken her hip and she’s not moving. And, and I’m like, ooh, do I tell her to tell her I don’t want her to feel bad because she can’t move. That’s just my, my one little small negative mindset going on? No, I can’t, I can’t lie. And I can’t keep things. Mom, guess what I started to do. I said, you know, I can’t come over right? This this one hour, I can’t come over because I’m this is what I’m doing. I started ballroom dancing. Well, just, you know, it opened up the door. I mean, it’s amazing. just opened up the door. My father wasn’t around. They divorced when I was six months old. And I found out that he taught ballroom dance lessons and Arthur Murray, holy moly. I mean, I think it was just in my blood, I was like, I really wanted to do it. And even my husband’s as I, you’re more Latin dance kind of a thing, you know. So it’s because he’s seen me dance now. So it’s funny. And he’s taken a couple dance lessons. Now, mind you, it was country western, I had to get him

going, but But you know, that’s just sparks the joy in me to keep moving forward to get through the

muck in the world that we have to deal with. We sometimes wade through some stuff, but you got to keep taking a step forward. This is I always talked about, you’ve got to keep taking that step forward, almost sometimes in any direction, but just keep moving forward. Because if you don’t, then you get stuck in your sink into that quicksand. But if you keep moving forward, you’re gonna keep moving. And then next thing you know, you might be doing two or three steps forward. Next thing 10 steps and, and you’re out of the muck, and you’re running on the beach, or going snow skiing or ballroom dancing or whatever, setting that you business that you want it. Yeah, I think it’s so important. I think a lot of people, we one, we don’t realize that we have a lot more control over our life and our schedules than we do. We think, Oh, I’m so overwhelmed. I’m so busy. But if we actually just would take a minute, or a day or a week, however long to really say, Wait, how much of this? Could I actually impact? Could I change? And how much of it? Am I just putting on myself? Because I’m not asking for help? Or I’m not trying to get? You know, if you have kids, it’s like, well, why aren’t you carpooling with someone else? Because you’re like, I’m busy every second, right? Well, is there a way to maybe pare that down? You know, or if you’re single, or you know, you’re married? Don’t Have Kids? It’s like, Well, are you spending all of us but spending a lot of time in on entertainment when we could be doing something else that might bring joy? So a lot of times we’re not actually assessing, you know, what is it we’re doing? And where are we maybe overwhelmed? And where are we not fitting in things that we keep saying, Gosh, I really love to write, learn to play an instrument or being I think it’s so important that people continue to figure out, like you said, what will bring me joy? What have I maybe put on pause or have never done that? I’ve wanted to do it? You know, and so many people talk about this, but don’t wait till you’re we aren’t able to do these things or don’t wait till the end elected, oh, gosh, I had all these things I want to do that I didn’t do right. That’s one of the Regrets of the Dying is, you know, do the things now, don’t wait. We don’t know how much time we have. We don’t know if we’ll be able to do them, you know, in a week, a month, a year, 10 years, 20 years? Because no, we don’t know our future. Right. And so I think it’s so important. And I know I found this and I’m sure you have if I just work, work, work, work, work and hustle, hustle. I start not feeling that creative energy. I don’t feel that flow. And I find I start being less productive. I have to take breaks and I have to step away from my computer, I have to do something that it could even be cooking something that you’ve never cooked that you’re like, Oh, this looks amazing, right? But it lets my mind, reset and clear. So I actually have more creative thoughts or more. Gosh, I think I know and I have an idea that I could apply here. You know, creative problem solving, if you will. So I think that’s super important. And like you said, What’s? Why is life worth living for?

not going to find things that make us happy and bring us joy. And we’re excited about you know, and so I think too many of us settle for just a routine instead of saying, Oh, I would really just love to really live my life, you know, and that, that joy spills over into other aspects of your life. And then you say, oh, you know, maybe I can start taking that class, to learn how to do this, start that business, or, you know, whatever it is. And it’s just so important, though, to work smarter, not harder. It’s, it’s, it’s proven, you need to chunk things down. So what you need to do is you need to maybe only work for an hour, 90 minutes, max, but you’ve got to take that half an hour break. And that’s where if you’re a pet lover, this is the best thing, if you’re a pet, go play with your pet for half an hour. For me, Max is looking at me, usually underneath my desk on our little Wilson, fine, we just have fresh air, we take a walk. And when you take that walk, oh, it’s amazing how many creative ideas come in, breathing out oxygen. So you’ve got to work smarter, not harder. I’ve learned that you’ve got to work, though. I mean, it’s not going to come if you don’t raise something. But like it said, You didn’t have to work every single step of the day, chunk it down and

    done in that hour.

So let me ask you about this, because you’ve obviously started and stepped into many new things in your life. And you talked earlier about, you know, we have to recognize the opportunities and TierPoint we can all rationalize away way why sometimes something like your opportunity to go Olympics, you know, in in the 90s, you could have just said oh, now my life’s kind of established and oh, I’m too old, right? You could have convinced yourself not to do it. But fortunately, you knew that that was such a had been such a big goal or dream of yours that you said, You know what? No, I’m gonna, I’m gonna do everything I can to try to make it happen since I’ve been presented with this opportunity. But I think too many of us say no, no, I can’t right now. And so we kind of, we don’t do it. And then later, we might keep asking, like, what if we find said yes. So what can you tell us about stepping into these new things? Like, how were you able to do that, and then keep stepping into new things? Because I think a lot of us, let fear or worry or something else, like we’re not sure how it’s what are the steps gonna look like? So we just don’t even take a step.

You know, I’ve learned all my life. And when we’ve all failed, even some of the biggest athletes, some of the biggest people and some of the people in your life, they’ve failed, but how fast they get up and take, like I was talking about earlier how fast they get up and start taking a step. Back when I was I did, I rode horses for a short, I took English riding lessons. So it was jumping. And it was a foggy night. And the force spooked as we went into this corner of the fog and the lights and he threw me.

My trainer was there. And so she kind of got him and said no, no, no. And then said, Lisa, get up there. No, no, no, you are, you’re getting out there riding that horse again. I mean, you’ve got to get back up. And, you know, try it again. Because you can’t let that get that fear out of there right away. They don’t want that creeping in. Don’t think about it.

You know, if something happens when I’m even when I’m at dance lessons, they’ll twirl me around in the opposite direction and said, Okay, do over let’s you know, do it again. It’s just

do something for a second. But don’t think about it. Don’t dwell on it too long. But how do you keep doing things? I just find I find something that i i Love. Or, or maybe I didn’t know, I loved it, but I started doing it. Next thing you know, you just like I said, I also started doing dog agility. All of a sudden, I started doing ballroom dancing. All of a sudden, we’re making flip flops and T shirts and beach towels for hula girl instead of the cocktails. Although that’s was the original intent to do the cocktails. And guess what here we are doing fashion and, and people are loving it. You know, we’re trying to make something iconic, and fabulous. You know, and not really expensive and oh my god prices are going so high these days. It’s just being positive. Always, always surrounding yourself as best you can with people or where you want to be. Alright. Um, so even when I you know what I mean? Surround yourself with like minded people. Try to stay away from the negative people. Sometimes it’s tough in life, especially if it’s like maybe a partner or a spouse but try to stay away from the negative people.

Talk to the people that are doing that are wanting to move in the same direction as you. You can have a set of different friends, you know, then you know your partner, you know, you could still be close and how

Have an awesome relationship and sharing those things together that you’ve done differently is good. You know, so it’s, don’t be afraid of that either, you’ve got to keep, you’ve got to really step out, and you’ve got to find a coach or a mentor. If you can’t, if you can’t find a group of people, sometimes we have, you might find a positive face book group of women entrepreneurs, and that have already done things. Or maybe you go to a seminar, you know, in you, and there’s like, all these speakers there, and maybe one resonates with you, and maybe half an hour podcast that you can listen to and, and, and increase those, get those creative juices going, and something and that’s gonna spark you or inspire you to do something. But if you’re not, if you’re just sitting

in a room not doing anything,

you have to go out. I know, it’s been COVID. And it’s hard to get out. But there are still ways to get out there. You can still listen to podcasts, you can I mean, it’s opening up that’s way opening up, even here in California, you can go out and do things now. So you’ve got to step out and just take that step and create that vision board. Because you can go, you know, what did I really want to do? Oh, I want to go to Hawaii. You’ve never been to why I want to go to Hawaii. Okay, well, you want to go to Hawaii? What is it that you have to do to get there, and you just get some steps, you just figured you will figure it out. But you have to take that first step towards that goal, whether it’s for fun, or for business, I’m trying. Yeah, and I say to people all the time, you know, let’s say as an example, whether it’s the trip they want to take or start a podcast. Again, it seems like a lot of steps, right? All the steps you think are in your way, right? Just write them all down, or that you have to get done. That’s a great list to have, because now it’s out of your mind, and it’s on your paper. Now look at that list and decide what’s the one or two things that I could actually do without doing the rest of the things. Because we get stuck in all the overwhelm of oh my gosh, but I have to have a website and whatever this I have to do this. And I don’t know how to edit. And there’s people that can help you with all those things. And like you said, there’s even free groups for a lot of that were free. There’s YouTube videos, there’s church tutorials, yes, you can save time by hiring people. And you probably will have to hire someone at some point. But the point is, is you can do so many things. You can report it record a podcast, I mean, it’s the same. It’s just an audio file, doesn’t mean you have it published everywhere yet. But in other words, we keep looking at all the things instead of what’s the one thing like you said, what’s the one little action I could take today that will help me get closer to this big goal? I have, you know, could I save $5 Today towards my trip, if that’s what they want to do? So I 100% agree with you. It’s about just saying What’s my goal? And how do I get around other people that have done this already, and that are doing it and that maybe, you know, I think it’s important to get around people that are ahead of you. But also given that round of your people that are walking through what you’re walking through, whether it’s an entrepreneur, starting whatever it is, you know, we’re there, there’s meetups, right? If you’re solo and wanting to go do some neat thing by yourself, and you don’t have somebody with you, that’s okay. There’s so many people looking to do the same thing as you, you know, I think that’s important millions of people out there, and it takes work sometimes to, to do whatever it is that you want to do or to, like you said to meet up or to. I meet people all the time. And it’s like, wow, and thank God, we struck up this conversation because, you know, maybe I share something with them, that is beneficial, you know, to help them with their parents in a nursing home. Or maybe I found somebody that reinvigorated to speaking of podcasts, that was one of my ideas and things of monetizing my dog Max. And I actually even recorded an intro. But sometimes, there’s too many things, right, so I had to prioritize. So sometimes you need to make that list. Maybe you’re one of these creative people, and you have lots of ideas, or write down those 25 things. And let’s only look at these three.

And when you get these three done, or maybe when you get one done, you can replace one of these down here with one up there, you know, and started looking at again. So I mean, I’m one of those people that I can kind of start thinking of too many things. And so it’s tough to put it in the back seat. It’s, you know, it’s still there. I still do a podcast for Marigold, but you know, it’s coming out there. That’s great. You can’t do it all at one time. You can still do all the things you want to do at some point to some level, you know, and I had my podcast microphone and I have I still have a business with my mom, but it’s in a different space. But that started years ago but I wasn’t expecting to take I’ve been working for myself expecting take a full time gig a couple years ago that I’ve stepped out of now. But I bought my microphone that’s sitting on my desk right here five years ago, knowing I was gonna do a podcast, but life happened and it changed you know, kind of that route that we don’t expect. So it sat on my desk

And I didn’t start the podcast till 2021, you know? Well, I started, I guess I started working on the idea of 2020, at the end of 2020. But the point is, is just because it took me longer than expected, because some things changed doesn’t mean I wasn’t still gonna do it. The season just wasn’t, the timing wasn’t right. And Sam, I’ve started several books that I plan to release, probably late this fall this year, and then into next year, they have been on my list, and I’ve started them, but other things came before it, you know, whereas yours was the books and later will be the some of the other stuff. So that’s okay. Because you like you said, you can’t do it all at once. Or do it? Well, because, you know, as you learn from the books, sometimes you have to align with the people that can help you so that you can actually get out there and get the sales or the podcast, you know, get the exposure, get on other shows. So I think that’s important to let people know that.

So what else would you want to share with us just about your journey and your five rings of success? Like, what do you find at the end of the day, besides people taking action, and just having a vision for what they want to go after? And being willing to step through that fear or whatever it is to feel like I’m gonna try, I’m just gonna keep learning and growing and try, what else might you share with us, um, two huge things that have been for lots of things. But two more things that have been a plus in my life is visualization. And then also just the power of positivity or that positive self talk to yourself. Because

if you tell yourself, you can’t, you cannot, and if you tell yourself, you can, you can’t a will. And

I, it’s so it is so important. So if you I can’t even I don’t know I’m getting, because I’m just thinking of some things that have happened recently. And it’s like, you can, you just need to combat that negative thinking that’s going on. So for me, the visualization techniques that I learned through it, when I was pitching, because I was a pitcher, and I was pitching and you’re in that crucial moment, it’s full count bases loaded, and you’ve got to get that strike in there. I even learned how to visualize even if my eyes open, but I might even just turn my back or half a second and just shut my eyes. And I can visualize and see that strike being thrown. And it just gives you that confidence. I’ve done it so many times that I’d see it, I could just do it right then and there. And then next thing you know, bam, it’s right there strike now, if the person hit it, or whatever, kudos to them, they were better than my pitch that moment. But I had done it so many times, even into my brain that I knew I could do it. And that’s almost with everything. Goodness gracious these days, I’m dreaming about

visualizing dancing, stuff, or I’m but visualization is so important. In any skill, whether you want to be a speaker or a podcaster, you need to see yourself do it, you need to see yourself going out and buying that mic and that,

you know, thing, if you haven’t done it yet, you just need to visualize those things. And when you’re sitting, when it’s sitting there in front of you, you knew you knew that it was going to happen stilling may be happening, right? The second, but that might be sitting on my desk for a reason. And you’re visualizing it, even if it’s it was just internalizing inside of you. And I think today that it took a little bit longer.

The most important is just being positive self talk to yourself is just so important. Because

we tell ourselves deeply in our subconscious mind, if you tell yourself that you are going to start that business or you’re going to, you know, you’re going to set that goal and you’re going to positively talk to yourself that oh, I want to make $10,000 a month,

you’re going to you know, you’re gonna do, maybe you’ll make to eight, but heck, if you hadn’t set that goal and told yourself that you can do it.

You might not even got to the eight, you might have only got to 1000 If we’re talking you know somebody that’s in a business, you know, world or something. So you’ve got to constantly take action, in sometimes just simple steps one step at a time talking positively leading that positive lifestyle hanging around positive people that build you up that empower you.

You can empower yourself, but sometimes, it helps sometimes to get a little fluff and a little positivity from others out there because you can’t do it alone. We all need a little help sometimes. Yeah, I so much agree with that. I mean, I think, you know, you you do have to keep working on that, that negative, you know, negative feelings or thoughts in your head because we all have them and we just some of us have done it long enough where they come a lot less than others, you know, because we’re aware of them and we’ve done some of the work to minimize them if you will, but they still come right. And so I think it

is important. I just actually wrote something the other day that was saying, it’s not. First you have to recognize you’re having the thought, right that the negative self subconscious or conscious feelings, but in your mind that you may be not speaking aloud, write them down and ask yourself, are these really true? Or mean? Is this just part of the story? And then what stories? Do you have her memories or facts that tell a different side of that story about yourself? Right? Like, some people think, Oh, well, I’m juggling, you know, like taking care of your mom. And then you know, being a wife and being a business owner, and you were feeling guilty, because you were going to do something that maybe would make her feel bad. But once again, you’re an amazing daughter right? In yet that one little thing was making you feel this certain way. And so when you finally spoke it, you realize, of course, I’m sure she was very happy that you were doing this, and you found this connection to your father. But this is how we have to kind of get those things to the light. And then we have to understand that this is just one little bit of truth or not truth, but there’s so much more that, you know, makes it I mean, it’s better that we could be telling ourselves, and then also the leaf itself, it’s not just not saying no negative self talk and not being positive, those are very important. And I think it’s an everyday thing we have to work on, you know, filling ourselves up with things that are positive and uplifting around us. But belief in self, I’ve talked to so many entrepreneurs, and they say, it was when I went from trying something to really believing that I could create this to become an income positive thing that it shifted for them. Like they were doing almost the same thing yesterday. And then today, something changed with them. And they knew financially, we had to make it work, but they finally believed like, No, this is gonna work, like I’m gonna make it happen in, in within a week or week. Sometimes they’re like, Oh, I did, right. But there was a shift, right? And how, what they believed about themselves, or what they believed about how they could make money themselves. And then the other thing I just add is commitment to self. So and I’m sure being an athlete, and all the things you’ve done, this is true. But even with the podcast, so many people quit after seven episodes, right? That’s just the magic number. And so knowing that if you’re going to start something, for instance, and businesses are the same way, not seven weeks or months, but you know, I mean, like they a lot of people don’t continue, commit to yourself that you’re going to keep at it for a year, two years, whatever it might be. I mean, you have to be manageable for you, you know, some people, it’s one episode a week or a month, okay? Well, if you can commit to that, commit to it, but commit to yourself, not to how many reviews you get, or how many downloads or how many listeners, because that takes time to build to large numbers, if ever, but even then you can have impact with small numbers. But if you commit to yourself to do it, because you know, it takes time to build and takes time. It’s about consistency. And I know you talked about persistence and consistency. But I think that’s really important too, is you have to commit it to yourself. Because if you let those outside factors, like how many people commented or how many people liked it, you’re gonna feel so defeated at some point that you’re gonna want to quit and you’re not going to continue with your good work. Yeah, you just, it is just everything, everything to do with mindset, everything about positivity, being persistent, confident, dedicated, positive attitude. I mean, just working smarter, not harder, so that you don’t kill yourself, you know what I mean? Trying to get to your goal, because if you burn out, that’s not gonna help you either. So it’s building endurance, building the muscles, having that focus, you know, focus and not get distracted by the phone. Turn it off. I that’s the one technology I mean, I have watches and I’m not wearing one as you can see, but

I have not gotten the Apple Watch, because I don’t know if there’s other ones out there. But I see people were in a meeting, and it’s on silent, but they feel that vibrator and they look at it in you lose focus in something, it takes a good 10 minutes to get focused and you’ve lost that time to you know, to chunk down and do that. So focus is so important not to get distracted. I literally took all I got I turned it off. But I did turn it off but unfortunately rang on my dark computer, but I removed all the phones I unplugged the fax machine mushy, I you know, I silenced you know, notifications, it’s like, you know, because I don’t want to be distracted for what am I doing with you right now? Have you on your phone? That’s right. 100% agree. And I mean, I have that same challenge in my household, you know, with, with three teenager, college sons and a husband, you know, every we all most of us are on our phones to my tray, or we check it too much. And it’s an issue in my house too. You know, like I’m learning to kind of like, I think I’m talking to someone and I want their full attention and I don’t get it always right, because we are so used to thinking it’s okay, and it’s normal and acceptable to let our phones with practice. And you know, I try to keep saying that’s not acceptable to me, right. That’s not your full respect. And so, but this is our society, we have to do a better job.

It’s just like you’ve talked about or you don’t. But I mean, we talked about a society, you’re at dinner with someone, significant other co worker, or you know, a colleague or friends, put the phone aside, for the most part, you know what I mean? Like, we just have to do a better job of being present, right? With the people we’re with. So, yes.

Live in the moment for sure. Because for so many reasons, you never know when somebody is going to be there. On that note, make sure you tell whoever it is that you love that you love them today, don’t wait. You don’t know what’s going to happen. And no regrets. No regrets on anything, whether it’s business, fun, people. Absolutely. So I’m so there with you. Alright, Lisa, how can people connect with you online and learn about and buy your books and catch up with you online, I have a website, it’s Lisa chava.com. But I also have another cute little thing. It’s called meet Lisa, three sixty.com. And I need to update that a little bit. But most everything’s there. But meet Lisa, three sixty.com. And so if you want to connect with me on Facebook, there’ll be a Facebook link there. If you want to, if you’re a Twitter person, there’s there if your LinkedIn person, it’s there. So it’s a great way to whichever fashion that you want, if you want to go straight to the website, or if you want to learn about the five rings of success or if you want to learn about books.

Meet Lisa, three sixty.com, or at least a shopper.com. Those be awesome ways to connect. Oh, I love it. Well, thank you for sharing your journey with us today in all of your insight and wisdom. And I wish you all the success with the book series and everything else you’re doing and hula girl. It’s a beautiful brand. So I’m sure it will do very well. Thanks again for being with us. Thank you so much for having me. I just loved it. Thank you. As I wrap up today’s episode, I just want to share a quick idea an excerpt from the book Dream Big by one of my favorite authors, Bob Gough, he says, make a list of your ambitions, I have a foam core board in my office that is divided into 16 squares. Each one of these represents an ambition of mine, I’m crystal clear about what I’m focusing my attention on. I know what I want, why I want it and what I’m going to do about it. If a new opportunity comes my way, I decide whether it’s worth adding another square on the board or whether I’ll pass on it. You could have three scores or 30. The trick is to know why it made the list or didn’t Oh, I love this idea. And I love the exercise the visual of seeing that. And getting really clear on those visions, those dreams you have and why you have those dreams. And if something else deserves to be up there with those big, hairy, audacious goals of yours. So get to it whether you know and I think the thing is seeing it regularly reminds you right instead of getting stuck in the day to day stuck in the weeds, we see past the forest, right or past the trees beyond the forest to our big vision. And I think that’s so important. Keep it top of mind. And I think you’ll go far with that. And just to wrap up today’s episode, I’m just going to share a couple highlights with you. So here we go. Success is not a straight line, you have to be able to shift. You need to seek joy, you need to have purpose and you need to chase after that. We need to keep moving forward. But we also need to take breaks. We need to work smarter, not harder, and chunk things down into manageable steps. We need to be willing to step into new opportunities and not be afraid of failure from holding us back. We also need to you know write down those creative ideas we have. And we need to be able to prioritize them much like Bob Goff shared with us how he does it. And then what is it you’re struggling to accomplish and how or who can help you along the way to reach those goals sooner. Until next time, I hope you have a beautiful day. If today’s show got you pumped about building your online traffic so you can grow your business. Let’s celebrate pop over and leave a review. 3 Questions to Find Out if Podcasting is Right For You

Hey and welcome back. Today we are starting a four part series on podcasting. And today I actually am doing kind of a cool episode we are going to talk about the three questions to find out if podcasting is right for you or right for you to stick with it. So I can’t wait to dive into this topic in this episode with you beautiful friend. Welcome to Business and breakthroughs. I created this podcast so that I can help you step into your God given purpose, monetize your gifts through an online business, and help you create consistent income and have more impact in your home and in the world. I’m Christian and online traffic growth coach and faith led entrepreneur that has a heart to encourage and uplift other people in their businesses and at home who built an online brain that reaches millions of people. I’ve worked in online marketing for over 20 years. And I know how frustrating it was to work so hard and feel like I wasn’t seeing more engagement opportunities or leads until I learned to optimize my online presence. If you’re ready to grow your business, so you’ll have more impact in the world. And you’ll be following the purpose that’s been put upon your life. Then grab your notebook and pen and let’s get going.

Okay, let’s dive right into today’s episode. As I said, this is the first part of the four part podcasting series. And today we’re going to talk about three questions to find out if possible, podcasting is right for you when it feels like everyone has a podcast. Okay. So the first thing I want to say is I’ve been podcasting. Let’s see, for about 14 months. And I knew for several years before this that I planned to podcast. But the timing just wasn’t right for me until then. And I have tried multiple other podcasts. Now this is my main podcast, but I have other very niche down podcasts as well that I’ve I’m testing out if you will. So and I’ve also edited other people’s podcasts and things like that in the past. So here’s why this is so important to me to talk about this topic today. One, there’s a ton of people that are considering starting podcasts, or are or are at the beginning stages of releasing their podcast. So one, this episode is perfect for you all, too. There’s people wondering, is podcasting. The next thing for me? Is it the next extension of my business. And then the next person this is perfect for is if you’ve already started a podcast, but let’s say it’s still new, you’re not hitting the numbers you want to which believe me, it takes time to grow a podcast, like any other business, at least for the majority of us. But this is perfect for any of us, any of you fit into one of these three categories. Okay, so the first thing I want to tell you is just a couple of stats on podcasting that I think are very eye opening, and will give you kind of some perspective on this platform on the format and sort of where this area is at. The first thing is there are 2.8 million podcasts. 2.4 of those are on Apple. So what that’s telling you is Apple podcasts, they’re the big boy, they’re the big player. So while you want to be all the places and I definitely am my podcast is pretty much available anywhere you can download or listen to a podcast, but Apple’s the big boy. Okay. And just to put that in perspective, how does that compare? Or I’m sorry, first of all, to put in perspective out of 2.8 million podcasts. Oh, I mean, I’m sorry, 80% of those are inactive, meaning they somebody published an episode or a couple episodes. They’re not currently publishing episodes for that show. Only 20% of podcasts are active, which means how to 2.8 million, just over half a million are actually active shows. And here’s a huge number to tell you. Most podcasts never make it past 10 episodes. Okay. And what happens is, there are 25% of podcast shows that are started, they don’t get past the first episode. Okay, only 38% of podcast shows that are published, do 10 or more episodes. So the first thing we’re going to, or the thing we’re going to talk about in a few minutes is consistency. And can you commit to doing this, because if you’re someone that can commit to doing this for a year or two years, you’re going to grow, you’re going to be in the top, a lower percentage because so many people give up before they get there. So if you’re somebody that can stick with it, you’re going to see that growth, but it might take you some time. Okay. And so it’s this is not to discourage you this is just to say if this is something that’s important to you, you will be able to make it successful. It’s just going to take time like growing any other business. Okay, so let’s jump into the questions. The first question I want you to ask yourself is when you’re thinking about starting a podcast or sticking with it, do you enjoy this format. So do you enjoy the speaking part of it, it being audio, do you enjoy having those kinds of conversations, whether it’s just a solo show, and you’re talking to your listeners, or whether you interview guests, or it’s a hybrid of those two things, but you need to enjoy that format. And an example would be if you love writing, and this is a stretch for you to do audio recordings, then you know, you have to ask yourself, is it worth the strain or the stress or the struggle. And one of the things I recommend for people, if they’re considering doing podcasting is, don’t just jump into starting your show, start being a podcast guest on other shows, and see how you like it, see how that feels before you put all the time and energy into having your own podcast. And to be honest, you’ll start getting better at it, and you’ll start seeing what it is you really enjoy about it. So that’s the first thing, do you enjoy the format? And then is this the best platform or format for me and my content, and how I’m going to reach my audience, you know, who my ideal, you know, listener is. And there’s lots of ways to find that out. For one, you need to be polling, you know, getting research on your users, your listeners as to what it is they want, you know, as far as what you can deliver to them. So whether you have an email list or you have a community, maybe you have, you know, a way you can reach out to them, you know, on social, whatever it is, but start asking people start figuring out, how would you what would you deliver to them regularly on your show? Alright, number two, is just having a podcast help you with your top business goal? Or will it help you with your top several business goals? Okay, so if you haven’t started your podcast yet, I think one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself, and I say this, you know, looking backwards, right, as they say, like, you know, rear view is, you know, it’s like, I mean, you actually have a lot more knowledge now than you did when you started. This was right, ask you, are you hitting your revenue goals, or at least where you need to be in order to add something on, because podcasting, like any other thing is going to take you time, and it’s going to take energy away from possibly something else you’re doing.

So if right now your goal is that you need to bring in more revenue, or start bringing in revenue or replace, maybe if you have a regular job, you need to replace that revenue, so you can do this other work, then really think about if podcast if now is the right time to start the podcast. I’m not saying that it’s not what I’m saying is most people that start podcasting, they don’t start monetizing it on day one. Now, there are examples where people, you know, either you already have a huge following, or you already have clients or customers that maybe are willing to be a sponsor, or you want to set up an affiliate thing. Yes. Could you monetize on day one? Absolutely. But most people, when they start, however, have a tiny listenership. And so you’re not really going to make much money. On day one. When you start podcasting, like I said, there’s always exceptions to that rule. But if your top goal right now is to increase revenue, or actually start making revenue, then podcasting may be something that you need to put on pause until you focus on that goal of money first. Like I said, there are cases where it’s fine started the podcast, because eventually you you, you will use it as a lead gen tool, or you will use it to sell your own programs or products, or, you know, to promote other people’s or whatever it might be, but just depends on your capacity right of time. And what’s your timeframe for your top goal or goals? And why do you want to have a podcast? You know, that’s really the question there, like, is it going to help you with your business goal? Or does it just seem like the sexy shiny thing right now, you know, Okay, the next number three is, can you commit to recording and publishing regularly? The reason this is so important is what I mentioned to you in the stats earlier that only 20% of shows are active. Only 38% of shows have over 10 episodes. And to put it in perspective. I mean, there’s people with all different numbers of episodes, right? There’s some people that do once a week, once a month, there’s people that do daily, bi weekly. I have published I think, since last May of 2021. It’s somewhere like 160 or more episodes. So just to give you an example of that over the 10 episode number. But this is a long game. Having a podcast is a long game. It’s not usually that immediate payoff, like I said, But you have to be able to be committed to doing it, I would say for a year or two years know that you can put the time in. So do you have any more space In your schedule, right, your work, load to fit in a podcast. Also, do you have money that you can commit to, you know, having people, you know, do small parts of it for you, whether it’s publishing, or editing, and if needed, or you know, those kinds of things. And I’m not saying you need to pay someone to do this, you can do it yourself. But if you don’t have a lot of time, then you’re gonna have to have somebody help you so that you actually have time to get it done and get it up there. So it’s a pay off, right? You either decide on you do more of the work yourself, but it’s more time, or you pay someone so it’s less of your time. But it’s super important, because like I said, if you’re going to do a podcast, but you only do two episodes, and then the way the wind blows is you decide to give up because you only had five downloads or 50 downloads. If you’re going to get discouraged that quickly, then maybe right now isn’t, podcasting isn’t the thing for you. Because you have to make a commitment to yourself and have a goal. For me my commitment was is I am going to consistently show up in publish my podcast every week, for at least a year or a year and a half. Of course, now I’m far enough into that I will continue it. But that was my goal over a year ago, was Don’t look down, don’t look around, don’t worry about the download numbers, even if they felt a little or inconsistent. Just keep pushing forward, keep iterating keep pivoting, keep tweaking and keep being open minded to learn to improve. I’m still doing that, I’d say weekly, you know what’s resonating? What are people interested in? What can I teach them that maybe I didn’t realize people want to know, what conversations do people want to have? What do they want to hear me talk about? So it’s so important. And so, once again, how do you find out if podcasting is right for you, and right for you right now, you first answer those three questions. And then you know, just bonus info here, come up with a list of all the things you need to do in order to launch a show. And then you can find this information online. And I’ll be talking about a little bit this a little bit of this in a later episode. You know, but it’s things like your podcast are starting to record a little introduction and an outro to your podcast, start recording episodes, you can just demo episode sample episodes, you know, start doing interviews with people, so you get comfortable, but hopefully you can use that content. And then it’s you know, come up with your new podcast name.

And it’s what do you call it? You know, it’s starting to decide on your podcast, hosting platform. And then eventually, before you publish, you have to register set up your podcast with Apple podcast, and then Google and Spotify and those apples as the takes the longest, you know, it can take days or or longer to get that set up. But you do all that kind of at the end. But the point is, there’s checklists, there’s information on what to do. But you need to be aware of that. So that when you start saying, I’m going to do a podcast, you know, you’re not trying to roll it out in a week, because there’s plenty to do. All right. But put all this stuff aside, and then just pick the one or two things that you can move forward on creating the podcast, if that’s the right thing for you, and if now’s the right time. And as I mentioned, I knew I was gonna do podcasts for several years before I started. I bought my Yeti microphone four or five years before I started podcasting. Isn’t that crazy? And it wasn’t because I was hesitating. It’s because I had had my own company for years. And I ended up taking a full time consulting position that I didn’t know I was going to be taking. But I took it and so I it wasn’t the right time, I just had to put it aside. And that’s okay. But I guess I’m saying this to say that sometimes we do have to pause or we have to wait to start the new thing. And that’s okay, too. But if this is something you want to step into, jump into some podcasting groups. There’s lots of people that are starting in and there’s also, as I was mentioning, getting on some podcasts, you know, in whatever your kind of focuses. There’s lots of podcast, hosts and guest communities on Facebook. And then there’s some that are just websites, but join those and then post about, you know what you can come on and share on their podcast and connect with people, but get going on something, get moving, right. And what I would suggest to you is, if you’re still uncertain if you’re still unclear on how to move forward, if a podcast is your next, this next thing that you’re going to start or if it’s if it really isn’t the thing you just were, you know, allowing that science shiny object to kind of get you excited, but maybe it’s not the right thing at the right time. Then what you can do a quick exercise is just close your eyes and envision the work you would do with podcasting so that would be recording the podcast. That would be possibly editing it or sending the information for some Some of the edit for you may be doing interviews, and then writing up the, you know, little info about the episodes. But so anyways, you would do that kind of work, close your eyes in vision that envision that work and doing it over and over right each week? How does it make you feel? Does it make you excited to talk about the subject matter in the way you would you would do that right over a podcast? Or does it make you feel worn out and tired? You know, and I say this as an exercise to see is something that you might do or some decision or setting on? Is it life giving? Or is it life draining? But sit on that for a while, you know, close your eyes and visualize that work? And the, you know, the format the platform and see, does this feel right? Or is there a different format, different platform that fits you better that feels more comfortable? And I’m not saying don’t do things that are not, you know, get out of your comfort zone sometimes. But you’ll know I was hearing the other day, I was listening to the gathering pod by Martha Beck her podcast. And she said that, I guess it was some years ago, someone had told her like, hey, let’s have a radio show. You know, they’d give her a radio show. And she was like, No, absolutely not. She’s like, I didn’t like radio station offices or recording studios. I don’t like all that stuff. So she said no. Well, now she has a podcast. But she does it I think from her home, right? It’s in her own environment. It’s she sets the time and the board boundaries around it. So even that example of you can do one audio format and dislike another and that’s okay. And then I want to share this idea with you from Emily P. Freeman, who I often share some of her words from her beautiful books. But in her book The next right thing she says this. We need to choose gurus or teachers, or mentors who will offer plans that line up with a vision we already have for our life, our work in our ministry. If you don’t know where you’re going specific directions won’t really help. Not until you see the big picture. If you feel frustrated and pulled in many directions like I have felt it could be because you’ve been looking for advice about the journey even before you knew or understood your hoped or destination. If you’ve been frantically searching outside of yourself for help with a plan, but you feel untethered and directionless. Maybe what you really need is to quiet down inside yourself and listen for a vision, vision and purpose have to come from the quiet place within us first, only then can we seek insight for the next right step to take that will align with our vision.

That’s not to say that we are going to see a clear plan for our life laid out before we can know our next right step. That’s the whole purpose purpose of just doing the next thing. But too often, I take it to the other extreme and look for outside voices to tell me what can only come from within. Oh, I think that’s so good. And I’ve surely been in the same state she talks about I have been there. I continue to find myself bumping up against this. So I just tell you, find time for reflection, find time to ask yourself some questions about podcasting or your next right thing and sit with them sit with that vision, you know, what does it look like? And how does that tie into what else you’re doing and what your vision is for the impact you want to have in the world and how you want to have it. So until next time, have a beautiful weekend. And I’ll see you back here next week. If today’s show got you pumped about building your online traffic so you can grow your business. Let’s celebrate pop over and leave a review. Chase The Fun to Reset & Reboot Your Business Mindset

Are you feeling a summer slump you just feel burned out just kind of blue or down or you just aren’t inspired when you’re not getting the important work done in your business? Well, today’s episode is perfect for you. We’re going to talk about four things you can do to get yourself going again, so that you can reset and reboot your business mindset. Beautiful friend, welcome to Business and breakthroughs. I created this podcast so that I can help you step into your God given purpose, monetize your gifts through an online business, and help you create consistent income and have more impact in your home and in the world. I’m Kristin in online traffic growth coach and faith lead entrepreneur that has a heart to encourage and uplift other people in their businesses and at home who built an online brain that reaches millions of people. I’ve worked in online marketing for over 20 years. And I know how frustrating it was to work so hard and feel like I wasn’t seeing more engagement opportunities or leads, until I learned to optimize my online presence. If you’re ready to grow your business, so you’ll have more impact in the world. And you’ll be following the purpose that’s been put upon your life. Then grab your notebook and pen and let’s get going. Before we jump into today’s episode I do you want to let you know that starting Thursday next episode, I’m going to be releasing a podcast series, we are going to dig into some tips and tricks and tools of the trade. We’re going to talk about the quest the three questions that you need to ask yourself to find out if podcasting is right for you. And so much more. So tune in for the next four Thursday’s, if that is something that you are wanting to learn more about. All right, here we go Summer, summer, summertime, I don’t know about you. But sometimes it can be hard to sit at our desk and get the work done, when it’s a beautiful day out. And maybe we have you know visions of sitting on the beach on our mind, or you know, going out with the kids to get ice cream. But what I would say to you is stop thinking those things and go do it. I think the reason so many of us feel burned out, we feel stressed out, we feel a little down, or we’re just feeling uninspired or maybe like we can’t focus. Often it’s because we have lost our you know, we haven’t recharged, we haven’t rested, and then we haven’t found ways to reignite that creative spark in all of us. So I’m gonna give you four ideas that can help you kind of jumpstart the rest of summer, so that you can be focused on business and really hit those goals you want to hit while you’re working. But my hope is that your work less while we wrap up summer because then you know the kids are back in school, it’ll there’ll be more time to have quiet, you know, time to get what it is we want to get done. So take advantage of a time when your family is likely off and more available.

Okay, first thing first, number one, how do we combat feeling that summer slump or summer blues? Well, the first thing is, is you need to put more free time on your summer calendar. Now some of us have gotten really good at this. And we work a lot less during the summer. And for the for those of you that are already doing that, but I say Whoo, good job. For those of us that still find ourselves working as many hours as we do the rest of the year, maybe even more than I’m going to say tap the brakes. And let’s start looking at our calendars. We need to be looking at them at the beginning of the year, quarterly, monthly and then weekly. And we need to schedule in the fun schedule in your vacation time, your time off. At the beginning of those those segments right at the beginning of the year review. When is your family taking time off, you know together? When quarterly Do you want to plan in days to reset to recharge to prepare, maybe to have a special half day outing with your significant other your spouse or one of your kids. And then every week review your calendar. If you find that what’s on it is just obligation and work, then you need to reevaluate. Add in what you say is a priority. So when I say for number two, and then we’re going to jump back to one is review your priorities regularly. And I’m not just talking about business priorities here I’m talking about your life priorities. So if one of your priorities is in the summer, and during the year to spend more time with your family, with your kids, to do you know to give them more unique experiences, right, then those things need to be put on your calendar. Otherwise they may not happen. And you’ll look back on summer or you’ll look back on this year and have a lot of eye wishes. So look at your priorities, review them regularly, make sure they still align maybe they’ve changed and then pull back out that schedule. And if each week you look and you haven’t scheduled in line into a dinner with a friend, you know, family dinner or family game night, going on a walk or a bike ride with, you know, whomever he wants to, then put those things on the calendar at least tentatively put them in a block of time so that you can do something, you know, you can have free time, if you will. So that’s one in two. And I will tell you, I just spent last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, down in North Carolina in the Outer Banks, my brother has a cottage down there. So I took my youngest son, and we want the friend and her son down there. It was amazing. I disconnected from social media for a few days, I had my feet in the sand, I was tempted to do some work, but I purposely did not bring my computer. Oh my gosh, it felt so good to just relax to just watch the waves in the sunrise, you know the sunset and just have time to reflect into recharge. And so this really is so important. But if you’re starting to feel those doldrum feelings or like I said uninspired, or you’re just feeling like you’re sitting at your desk, and you’re not accomplishing a lot, or at least not a lot that’s moving the mark, then off, then it’s likely that this episode, these tips are something you need to consider doing. Alright, number three, set less priorities each week during the summer. It let’s be realistic. It’s for me at least and I don’t know, you know your exact circumstances. I have my three sons home all the time in the summer, other than when they’re at sporting events or conditioning, or you know, might be working or something. But they’re home a lot. And while they’re not little kids anymore, so they’re not running around grabbing it my leg and needing my attention. They do come down in when I’m trying to work or report or record podcasts, it can still be distracting for me to hear them in the other room. So let’s be realistic about our priorities. And for instance, my kids, my youngest son, I should say, needs a lot more rides in the summer than during the school year. They’re not. They’re just quick rides, but it just cuts up the day. So let’s be realistic about our priorities for summer. What if we only did the most important things each week each day, and we really did put aside the rest. I think you’d be shocked at how productive you’d be on those big important tasks in how much lighter you felt.

So look at your priorities, are you trying to get 25 things done in a day and you wonder why you’re exhausted at the end of the day. And also when we get stuck in production, right, we get stuck in our to do list. We get drained, because we aren’t tapping into our creativity. It’s we’re not tapping into that zone of genius like Gay Hendricks talks about we are stuck in production work, we’re stuck in work that doesn’t light us up that we aren’t masters of in. So we have to also be careful of balancing work that we truly, you know, were gifted at, if you will, and that really we could do forever. That’s the kind of work that will keep us going in the summer and throughout the whole year. So we need to review that as well. Number four, we have to find time and we need to put it in our schedules to recharge to reset. And then also change up your routine. Try something new for dinner, go walks, you know, pick a place and go on a hike somewhere different. I like to call these creative detours, you know, so in other words, find little ways each week where you can have creative detour detours. And it’s so amazing even if you’re going to walk in your neighborhood and I’ve talked about this before, pick something to focus on. You know, as you go on a walk notice become a notice or write Mark Patterson talks about that idea of becoming a world class noticer when you’re on your walk, wow, that is purple flowers are beautiful. Well then say to yourself, I wonder how many other purple flowers or flowers I’m going to see on my walk and then you will focus on the purple flowers. I’ve been on a walk before and I have a tree that I pass often. That has the shape the LEAP village shape of the leaves look like hearts. So then as I’m walking, I think to myself, wow. What other things will I pass right? Like trees and bushes, you know, whatever it might be, that have, you know these beautiful shapes in nature. So then I will pay attention to those details. But if I’m so caught up in my head, I miss all of it. But when you do these things when you challenge yourself to look for unique things to look for something you haven’t noticed before, when you challenge yourself to change your routine, walk a different route, walk the route backwards, but it makes us use our brain in Different way. In other words, we aren’t stuck on autopilot. In the same way when we do that. And, you know, as I was thinking about, you know, hitting this summer slump, which I have also experienced this, several times of summer, I felt worn out burned out, I wasn’t sure the way I was moving forward, if it was the right way, and it started to make me feel exhausted. Also, when we’re going through a lot of stuff mentally or emotionally, we need to acknowledge that. And then we need to give ourselves that grace to not be so hard on ourselves, it may be that we need to slow down with the work or take more breaks. You know, when I’ve had some things go on with a family since now, between January now, there were certain weeks where I was really struggling to focus on my work. Then I remembered, it’s the weight right of the things that we were, you know, going through the weight of the things we were thinking about, we were concerned about, they were taking a toll right on me. And but once I acknowledge that I gave myself a little more grace to say, this is okay, right. There’s tomorrow, there’s next week, there’s next month, and it is okay. And I also want to mention that, even in Jeremiah 3125, it says, For I have satiated the weary soul and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. So even in Scripture, many, many times God is talking about the need and the importance of us renewing, refreshing to get dressed in so this is such an important theme. It’s such an important part of being a human is that we have to do this. And so I think that’s just so important to remember that if we seek God, if we listen to His promises, this is the one of the things that he tells us right is by going to him to seeking him out in His Word, we can find that rest and that renewal that comfort. And then there’s also just a quote, I think it’s an unknown author that I think really speaks to, you know, what we’ve just kind of talked about, which says, It’s better to look back on life and say, I can’t believe I did that than to look back and say, I wish I did. So I hope this summer before it wraps up, you will step out and do the things that you can come you can look back and say I can’t believe I did that. So that at the end of the year and next year and the year after you won’t say I wish I did that instead of working a few more hours.

  • Learn My Online Growth Secrets

    Learn My Online Growth Secrets

Beautiful friend. Welcome back to business and breakthroughs. This is your host, Kristen and I am so excited you’re here with me today. Okay, today we are going to wrap up the secrets of optimizing your online presence to grow your leads and traffic. This is part six of six. And I’m going to do a quick summary of the last six or five episodes. And then I will give you a couple little tips to wrap this series up. And before we begin, I just want to point out the purpose of this series. Even if you’re new, or you’re just thinking about your website, or if you’re somebody that’s has a super established website, both cases these tips can be used. The whole point of this series is to help you grow your impact and your income by simple strategies that you can do on your own. Or you can work with somebody to help you get these things accomplished. But if you implement them, and you’re consistent, which we’re going to talk about in a little bit, they will help you grow your business. Of course, you have to have other things like really clear messaging and understanding your audience. But if you have those two, two things understood, and then you apply these tactics, these strategies, you will see more traffic and then leads as well over time to your website. It really can be your number one business tool every day. 24/7. So let’s dive right in. Okay, first, let’s just do a super quick overview of a highlight from each of the first five part of the series. First is you really do need to have a tech and growth mindset in business, especially when it comes to growing your business through your website. And I get it tech can be frustrating tech can be hard, we can you really want to throw our hands up. Because you know, there’s so much to learn. And there’s always new things kind of getting thrown at us. Here’s the good news. You don’t have to be an expert. And you really should just learn as you go. What do you need to do now? What do you need to add? Have you outgrown where you’re currently at, and you need to do something different. And there’s always so many resources online, from YouTube videos to people like myself that can really walk you through steps and tactics, to tutorials into programs. So or short for people, of course, that you can hire out to help you do these things. So you can learn as you go. That’s the first big lesson is just have an open mind have a growth mindset that you’re just gonna have to continuously learn, but learn what you need to know now not you know, six months or a year or two down the road.

The next number two lesson and part two that we talked about is SEO how do you optimize your website? So that it’s search engine optimized? Meaning how do you show up in Google search results, you know, or other search engines, but Google is the big boy right? The the number one search engine? Well, you do that by putting in the keywords and keyword phrases and all the places that will help Google know, hey, this is a good fit. So that’s adding in the meta title and description, which is in your back end of your website or your content management system. That’s using the alternate text tags for your images in your in your posts. It’s making sure that you have content, you know that talks about the area that you’re an expert in or that you you focus on and that it has things that people are actually searching for. And then of course, the names of your pages and things like that. But once again, just learn as you go do a little bit at a time, you don’t have to all of a sudden go from doing none of this to everything in a week or a month. All right, just slowly start implementing these tactics. The number three session that we did was how do you use other web sites and social sites to grow your traffic? Well, if other sites that are known for an area that you’re trying to be known for link to you for certain tutorial, or an how to or a blog post, that’s going to help kind of give you more authority. And it’s also going to help give you more traffic. Same with social share your blog post or your website when you have like you know new content, or maybe a template or a download, share it on social where you show up where your people are because whether you get two leads or you know two clicks from that a month or you get 50 or it grows to a much bigger number. If you don’t put it there, they can’t see it or be engaged from that place. So do that. Number four was if you’re not blogging, you’re losing out on traffic and growing your business from your website. Once again, you don’t have to blog all the time every day. But if you can be strategic, and you know weekly or monthly, do a new post that ties back to how you want to be known to what you can do Talk about and how you can help people. It’s so important. And as I mentioned that episode, having pillar posts, which just mean the super long like a how to post or a guide that sort of the, you know, tell them all, if you will, in certain areas that you focus on, it can really help grow your business as those get seen and kind of linked to Alright, so that’s huge. Number five, Part Five, what we talked about is how do you make your website convert? This is trying out things like alert boxes and pop ups, and having freebies, where if people you know, are behind the scene things, people sign up with their email, in order to get that content, you know, in order to get that step ahead from you. So super important. And you do have to try different things. And also you have to try, is it what your person wants, because if you’re trying to give them some sort of freebie or extra, but they don’t care about it, then it’s not going to convert. So sometimes we have to ask, you know, pull people, and then try different content. All right. So here’s what I want to. So that’s a five things we covered in the other five parts. Today, I just want to leave you with a couple other tips that I think will just kind of hit home this whole series for you. The first is, all of this really comes down to the same thing about how do you have a successful business, it’s by being consistent, showing up consistently. That’s true with having a podcast that’s true with running an online business with a coaching business whenever you’re doing. So be consistent show up regularly, you know, don’t make a commitment, like I’m going to show up every day on social media, but it’s not manageable for you make it I’m going to show up twice a week, or I’m going to blog twice a month to make it a reasonable goal that you can commit to for a longer period of time. Number two, as I mentioned earlier, in this episode, learn as you go, you don’t have to know everything right now. That’s how people that really are successful. That’s what they do. They either learn as they go, or they find the expert to help them when they need it. Not before and not after. Number three, track your results. If you don’t track where you’re at and where you’re trying to go, you won’t have a benchmark of if it’s actually working. And of course, with anything with SEO and online, give it time because it doesn’t happen in a day, right, it takes time to get pulled in from the search engines and for your changes to show.

Number four, add new content regularly. This is huge, but content marketing is big. It just is. And it’s because you’re providing relevant information for your ideal customer regularly that they can learn and grow from the last two things, grow your email list, we do that by asking people to sign up. So whether it’s through our website, or if we have a community or group, when they join, ask for their email in all the places, but ask for it because you’re providing value to them first, or you’re going to in that group or on your website. And then do outreach. You need to be connecting with new people in order for them to come to know what you’re doing in that they should come to you, you’re the go to person for your area. It’s so big, and it’s so important. But that’s how people grow their businesses is by coming on and serving other audiences and being a value. So that can be through podcast guest, you know, to being a podcast guest it can be through guest blogging, writing for magazines, like entrepreneur, Fast Company, it can be just going on other you know, smaller sites that have a really targeted audience, but the person wants to learn from you they want to share with their audience want, you know, so just make that a goal every month is to do some outreach, and some connecting with new audiences. And that is so important. So this wraps up our series of secrets to optimize your online presence. I hope you learned something from it. And hopefully you can apply these tactics over the coming months. And you can really see some growth in how your website is growing your traffic and your leads. So I would love to hear from you. What other things would you like to learn from me and I know soon I’m going to be doing a podcasting series and tell you lots of things that I’ve learned over the last year plus of doing this. So we want to wrap up today with a concept from the book, the genius zone by Gay Hendricks. Some of you may have heard of his first book called The Big Leap. And some of you may have read both of his books. Well, he had the joy of genius, but that was changed to the genius zone. But anyways, in his in this book, he talks about you know, trying to basically work in our zone of genius instead of our zones of incompetence, competence or excellence. And here’s what he says. And while I just gave you a six part series on tactics and strategies I Do want to also point something out, which is what he says here. Many people waste a great deal of their creative time and energy doing things you’re not good at. And your incompetence box may make a list of the three things that you persist in doing that you aren’t any good at. He gives examples like taxes, organizing computers and plumbing are properly are examples. Then he goes on says many other squander the creative energy doing things they are good at, but that someone else could do just as well or better. And then he has you list the three things in your competence box. And then he goes on and says getting stuck in your excellence box is by far the biggest burner of genius energy, list your excellence box and three things that you I’m sorry, three things you do that you’re really good at.

You get feed good feedback on how you do them, you’re often well paid at doing them. And people ask you to do more and more of them examples, giving presentations, composing advertising jingles, editing documentaries. But what he says is this, the boxes SAP, your creative energy, from working with creative people, and just about every major line of work. From medicine to management to metaphysics, I have seen up close the unhappiness caused by getting stuck in these boxes. I felt it myself, when I first caught on to these ideas in the 1970s, I began tracking my daily activities carefully. It didn’t take much tracking to reveal the sad truth, I was spending 90% of my time and energy doing things in the three boxes. At best, I was spending only 10% of my time and energy doing what I really love to do. Why do I bring this up? I bring it up because doing tech stuff working on our websites. For most people. This is not in our zone of genius. This is why you most of us probably need to get help, or have someone else do some of this work for us as we’re able as we grow our businesses. And we can farm that workout, whether through a contractor, a virtual assistant or an actual, you know, team member. So I only share that to say, well, I gave you the tactics and strategies because I think we need to understand these concepts. It doesn’t mean you have to do it yourself. And I only share that because at the end of the day, I think we all will grow our businesses, we will all rise, when we really do step into that sweet spot or zone of genius where you know, it’s something that just comes so easy to us and that we’re actually energized by doing it instead of feeling exhausted. And even with the tech stuff. I can feel worn out and exhausted, I have to be careful to not stay in that zone of excellence instead of my zone of genius. So I only share that as an encouragement in one sense to say it’s okay, if this doesn’t come easy to you and that it’s draining. That’s okay. You still want to know the concepts and then go farm it out. If you have to trade with somebody, you know, swap services for what you’re exceptional at. So that’s it. I just wanted to give you that little tidbit in case you’re listening this episode and go oh my gosh, it’s just too much for me. It’s just feels overwhelming or it feels so hard. I get it and it’s okay. Like I said, just understand the concepts because even if you have someone else do it, you have to understand what it is you’re asking them to do. I hope you have a wonderful day. If today’s show got you pumped about building your online traffic so you can grow your business. Let’s celebrate pop over and leave a review. • Go After Your Wild Dreams & Ideas

Go After Your Wild Dreams & Ideas

Hey, and welcome back. If you guys are in a season where you’re doubting your next step, if you’re unclear in some part of your business, you’re unclear in the next thing that you’re going to add to your business, or you’re just not sure how to stand up and step out. This is the episode for you. I am going to pose the question that Emily P Freeman in her book, The next right thing asks herself when she’s in the midst of a hard decision, she asked herself, am I being led by love or pushed by fear? We’re going to dig into this and several other things today that I think will really help you with indecision and moving forward with more clarity. Beautiful friend, welcome back to business and breakthroughs. This is your host, Kristen, and I am so excited. You’re here with me today. Okay, so why are we jumping into this today, when I have pulled some of the people I’ve worked with, when I’ve pulled some of the people in the groups I’m in? One of the things that came up for them was, I am still all over the place in my business, I’m still unclear in parts of my business, or how to really step it up. And so because of that continuous question, or some version of it, I wanted to dive into this today. Okay, so first up was the question that Emily P Freeman asked herself, when she’s in the midst of a hard decision, when she’s trying to figure out the path forward for herself. She asked herself, honestly, you know, to answer this question, am I being led by love or pushed by fear? And she says, the answer to that question isn’t always clear. But I continue to carry it with me into every difficult situation or decision. I’m sorry. So my first question for you is, has you tried to make choices in the business you’re building and in your life about what brings you happiness? What brings you joy? What is helping you do the creative work you felt you feel that you’re meant to do? What’s holding you back from doing that? What is keeping you in routine and then the mundane instead of at your highest, you know, creative ability? And I think that’s a great question to ask that Emily asked, which is, am I being led by love or pushed by fear? Is there some desire for me to do this thing right now? You know, what am i What’s holding me back? Is it hesitation? Is it worry?

Is it fear? Is it what if it doesn’t work, instead of what if it does. And the other thing that I want to mention that she shares in her book is, she talks, she says this about another book, and I think it’s just such a lovely thing to share. She says, in his book, hearing God, Dallas, Willard shares that when he has, he asked something of God for direction or clarity in some way, he stated simply in prayer, and then devotes the next hour or so to housework, gardening, driving about on errands or paying bills, things that keep his hands busy, but his mind opened. And then she says today’s practice is to share with your friend Jesus directly the question you’ve been carrying, and then move on to your day as normal. It could help to remember these words, also from Dallas, Willard. I’ve learned not to worry about whether or not this is going to work. I know it does not have to work. But I am sure that it will work if God has something he really wants me to know or do. This is ultimately because I am sure of how great and good he is. And Emily goes on to say, as you simply do the next right thing in front of you. Wash the dishes, write the email, read the chapter, have the conversation, pay attention, not only to what’s happening on the outside, but what is moving on the inside. Look for the arrows not just answers. If God has something to tell you, and you continue to place yourself before Him, He won’t let you miss it. I love that. And I think too often we don’t pay attention to the arrows to the signals to the people to the words, maybe the podcast that shows up just at the right time, or the song that has just the words we needed the encouragement the helping us to make a decision. Those things I don’t think are by chance. And I think it’s things we need to pay attention to. I think too often we get stuck in the what ifs and the what should we do in our to do list that we remove ourselves, right from the our zone of genius from our place of creation, our place of creativity, our place of curiosity, that what if we just did the thing we felt drawn to do right now? What if we did the work that most lit us up? I just think that that is what would bring us to our being able to focus on what we’re really meant to do instead of what we think the world wants us to do or where we think we can make money. You know, I love this how the saying goes about? Don’t worry so much about money. They say, what would you do if money was no if you had all the money in the world, right? What would you spend your time doing? But I think when we’re starting businesses or we’re growing businesses, or maybe we are in a cycle of you know, stuff Ignatian are a cycle of slowness, where maybe we’ve written the book or we’ve started the podcast, but we’re not seeing the growth we want, or we haven’t started the next book, or project that all of a sudden, we’re, you know, we’re still trying to figure out what’s next, what do I do? How am I going to get this done. But we get sort of stuck in those decisions that we pull ourselves out of the creative process, which I think is such a risk, and that the goal is always to get back there to get back to creating, especially creating when we partner with God. And another thing that I wanted to share with you that I think was just fantastic. It’s so lovely, is by the author Jordan Lee Dooley in the book on your every day. And speaking on this topic, she says this sister, you will tackle your unfinished out dreams only when you give yourself permission to dream outside the box.

Just try some stuff and show up as your full self. Not an older version, or more figured out version. Don’t try to be the person you perceive others expect you to be be you with your wild ideas and funky quirks and, um, figured out dreams and lack of expertise. When you do that when you root yourself and faith and step beyond the labels, you may be wrapped up in something divine happens, you may even fumble into a dream you didn’t know you had friend try stuff before it makes sense. Because it doesn’t need to all make sense in order for God to use it. He’s got this, he’s got you. And that means you can do something as seemingly small as doodling on computer paper with no idea what it could turn into, even before the lady in Texas makes her purchase, and still be living your purpose. Oh my gosh, those words, they just speak to my soul. And I think that’s the point. There’s so many people that speak to this concept of taking messy action. And, you know, everywhere, one from Marie Forleo. And I know Kathy Heller then speaks about this. But we have to take action in order to gain that clarity. You know, they both and others talk about that concept. Keep taking action, but worry less about what will the action? What will the creative process where will it lead you in just focus more on getting in that state in that space, where you have inspiration, you know, hit you where you have ideas that you’re doing, because you just feel joy because you feel drawn to do it, instead of trying to follow you know, 10 point path. And you get stuck in the how to use instead of actually being your most creative self, because people are going to be drawn to that creativity to the creation that you’re having into that, that light and you that’s lit up when you are creating and when you’re truly your authentic self with all your quirks and your wild ideas and your dreams. So my challenge to you is this, how do you start making space in your day, every day, to have these creative outlets to have more self expression, to allow yourself to clear your mind in order to have those inspirations that divine download the creative ideas that are right there waiting for you. They’re swirling around, they’re just waiting for you to be opened and available. In much like Dallas, Willard said, or Emily P Freeman, we have to sometimes think about what it is we’re trying to understand or get clarity on, but then start doing something it doesn’t have to be trying to figure it out. It’s often better if it’s something else, right? We’re staying busy physically, but not always mentally. And I just think it’s so important to make space for this. And what I like to do is every day is see am I giving myself breaks, you know, going on a walk getting outside, maybe doodling, you know listening to a song that I love or finding a new song, listening to a podcast that gets me out of what I’m working on in into thinking of possibilities. Do other suggestions where you are this one? Can you add a creative practice or creative practices into your day, right? Start it so that you do it at the same time every day. Some people love to do things like morning pages or journaling. You know, obviously also spending time getting quiet meditation, you know, Trant time to hear God. But make space in your day and pick times that you can set this up and it becomes part of your routine. Because when we don’t have to we can get busy and then some of the things that should be important to us. They get put aside they get ignored, or we don’t put the effort into it. Write down your wild ideas. Write down the things that you would love to do, but maybe something has been holding you back from doing them. Maybe you want to start a podcast or write a book. Maybe you want to travel around the world by yourself or start a Photography, course business, whatever it is, just write down those dreams you have, you know, I don’t care how wild and outlandish they are actually, the more wild and outlandish, the better. Maybe they’re so big, you can’t even fathom how you would get them done. Once again, those are the kinds of dreams that often are our God sighs You know, God given dreams, write them down. And I’d like you to put beside them. What is one step I could take towards this dream today, it can be as small as sending someone an email, or telling a friend about your dream and telling them one little thing you’re going to do. Maybe it’s writing your first paragraph for a future book.

Maybe it’s paying a subscription fee for an app that’s going to help you write every day in the morning for an hour or half an hour. But write down your wild ideas. And keep a book where you add to it you know, a journal or a note in your note on your phone. Next, is there anything you can add to your day to make sure you have time for creative work, and for time to let your mind clear and have those creative inspired moments. And often it’s when I’m taking a walk and I’m allowing myself to pay attention to what’s around me. But I’m have a clear mind that I often will get ideas. You know, it’s often when I’m walking or I’m in motion. Just like the examples I gave earlier, we’re talking about moving your body or doing you know, some sort of activity that’s, you know, somewhat mindless, right like washing a dish, you know how to already wash it. That’s the second thing I would say in the third is when it’s time to make a choice about the path forward, whether it’s just the next action you’re going to take or putting out an idea into the world. Is it fear holding you back? Is it worry or the negative? What ifs? Or is it love is it focused on love. So make sure that if you’re hesitating on something, it’s not out of fear, and try to take the path over and over again towards love and towards being opened and sharing your beautiful inspired work. And I just want to leave you with these words that Michael C Clarke and author and he does affirmations for creatives shared on Instagram today. He says, Hey, you, yes, you remain present this week. Let go of guilt attached to mistakes you’ve already made. Stop worrying about future events that might not even happen. Live in the moment. Focus on what’s right in front of you. Okay, okay. That’s what I’d say to you. Let’s just focus on today. Let’s focus on the week. And let’s focus how we can step out of fear and worry in the what ifs or how we you know, how should I move forward in my business? What’s the next thing and just take some small action? What do you feel the urge the desire or the interest in doing just go do a little bit of that and see where it leads you if today’s show got you pumped about building your online traffic so you can grow your business? Let’s celebrate pop over and leave a review. Measuring Your Spiritual Health & Practice

On today’s show I speak with Pastor Stephanie Lape about how to have Hope when going through hard times or challenges and which daily practices can help us be happy, feel well and be connected to each other, ourselves and God. She also shares some great biblical perspectives on Faith, Hope and Love that were so reassuring and helpful.

We talk about being overscheduled, saying no so we can say yes to other things, feeling disconnected from our faith and how to reconnect and rekindle that faith and how to focus on the bigger wisdom available to us instead of trying so hard to figure out our purpose on our own.

  • 5 Reasons Not Blogging Is Hurting Your Business

5 Reasons Not Blogging Is Hurting Your Business

Hey there and to on today’s episode, we are going to talk about blogs. Some people want to know do I really have to blog is blogging dead? With all the buzz about podcasting and other things? Sometimes blogs get a bad rap. But we’re going to talk about why they’re so important for your business. And one data point I want to share with you is that companies that blog gets 67% more leads a month, just by blogging regularly. So we’re going to dive into the top five reasons you should be blogging in your business. And we’re going to share some of the things you need to do on those blog posts. It’s easier than you think. And I know you can get started if you’re not doing it already. To beautiful friend, welcome to Business and breakthroughs. Do you want to optimize your online presence so you can get more traffic to grow your writing, speaking or coaching business? Are you constantly trying things online? And wondering what actually works best to grow your email list? get leads and book more opportunities? Are you looking for ideas that will help you grow your brand? I’m Kristin, an online traffic growth coach who built an online brand that reached millions of people. I’ve worked in online marketing for over 20 years. And I know how frustrating it was to work so hard and feel like I wasn’t seeing more engagement opportunities or leads, until I learned to optimize my online presence. After putting the systems in place, I was able to grow an online audience to over 10 million with 38 million pageviews and grew an email list to 50k, all with one brand, I want to help you do the same. Getting traffic online doesn’t have to be so hard.

I created an easy to follow online growth system in online marketing strategies that work to grow your audience and increase your traffic, grab your coffee in a notebook, and let’s grow your traffic. Alright, let’s dive right into today’s topic. This is part four of the six part series secrets to optimizing your website to grow your traffic and leads. So we’re talking about blogging today, why you need to do it, how it can help you get more traffic and leads to your website and how it can be easier than you might think. So the first thing though, that I want to talk about is blogging is considered a long form content type. Okay, so what we mean is, I’m going to be talking about blog posts that need to be at least 300 words, in some of the ones I’m going to recommend to you there’s different types are over 4000 words. And that’s why we’re calling it long form content. Because we’re not talking about just a little blurb, or you know, something like your about page on your website, those are all needed, right, your basic pages of your website, this goes above and beyond that, where you’re regularly going to be writing content, right? It’s written content to help your audience you know, in other words, the blog posts should be informative, or educational, but it should help them solve something, it should help them give them information about a topic they’re interested in. So that’s the idea here.

Okay. So the first thing I want to share with you is the five reasons why you need a blog today in 2022. And beyond. Here’s the first one. Blogging regularly improves your search engine results. So the more often you blog, and you have, you know, rich content, you know, rich information that someone wants in those blog posts, the more that you will start improving your search engine page ranking, right. So you’ll you’ll rank higher on the Google pages. Number two is you get more social shares when you blog, because people, you know if they read your content, or maybe you email it out to them, or you post on social, if it’s relevant to them, it might be relevant to someone they know and they might share it with others. Number three more people will link to your website if you have valuable content. And you are setting yourself up as a subject matter expert in that area. All right, and that’s another way that we get more we rank higher in search engine results is by getting other people to link to us what some kind, sometimes called backlinks or inbound links or incoming links. Number four, you get more leads, as I mentioned in the intro, because when people read about a topic you’re talking about you once again, right look like someone that knows what they’re talking about. And they often then want to learn more about what you do and how they can work with you. So that’s how you get more leads. Number five, is it shows you have authority on that certain subject or topic. And while that helps both the people that might want to work with you, it also helps Google see that you are an authority, right? So that your blog post may be one that they rank higher because of that authority.

Alright, so those are five reasons that you should be blogging. And if you’re already blogging, a lot of times we can improve. Just going through the motions. We can make our blog post better or as we go forward, we can improve them a little bit. So there’s two core things here I want you to understand. One is you need to do regular blog posts, those blog posts, typically Should never be under 300 words. And they definitely can go up from there. Some of the data from HubSpot and other companies say the magic number for for standard blog posts is between 20 120 400 words. Okay? Why is that, because they found that that range of a blog post is long enough free to share enough information that’s valuable to your reader, you know, to your visitors to your website. And so that’s the first thing you can do is, if you’re blogging now, and you’re finding they’re really short blog post, try doing your next blog post, increasing it. Now, every blog post does not have to be 2100 words or more, they can definitely be 300 800 1000 2000. But you do want some that are longer, because that’s going to help with your authority, and you’re going to most likely rank for those longer blog posts. Okay. They also there’s also data that says that sites that have blog posts around 2500 words when they’ve compared all their different, let’s see blog posts, links, that’s where the sweet spot was to get the most leads. So blog post around that same size that I said that 2100 2400 are just over it, often will help you get more leads, because you’re sharing a lot of content in that blog post, which hopefully will help your user you know, with something they’re trying to figure out or solve. Alright, next, there’s something called pillar posts. pillar posts post just mean that you are going to write a longer even longer blog post on a topic, or keyword that’s all encompassing like a guide on a topic.

Obviously, this needs to match with what you do, what kind of business are you in? How do you help people? So those guides should be about that. Okay. So why are those important? They’re important, because that really shows authority and other people will start linking to your pillar posts, you know, your guides, if you will, because you have so much information that you’re trying to be the expert on it, you’re trying to be the place where someone can learn all about something, they are longer, they, they aren’t going to take you an hour or two, they’re probably going to take you a couple of days to write them. But you don’t have to do this all the time, right? Because for months and years, there’s pillar posts will drive traffic to your website. And you can even update those pillar posts in the future. If there’s other valuable content to share about that topic. You can update it, and then you don’t have to rewrite the whole thing. You’re just updating it with even more information. Okay, so pillar posts, the recommendation is that they should be 4000 words. And I know that seems like a lot. But remember, you’re only willing to do a couple of these pillar posts during the year. Now, they can range from 2100 to 11,000 words, but the average pillar posts in a really good sweet spot is 4000 words.

Okay, so here’s the thing, how do you blog or where do you blog? Well, if you’re on a site, like WordPress, which is the most popular content management system right now, or has been for some time, they have a area in the dashboard that just says posts and that’s where you go and you you actually publish, you know, add and then publish your posts. If you’re on a different site, like square space or something like that, obviously, it’s going to be different. If you use show it, which is just layered on top of WordPress, you should also have the option to be able to post blog posts easily. Let’s see. So the next thing to know is how do you what do you have to do on your blog post in order for it to do well in order for it to be worth your time? Okay, so here’s just a couple highlights. Let’s see, I’m going to go through five. Okay. The first is, number one, you need to have proper formatting in your blog post. In this includes the right heading or using heading and paragraph tags. The reason for that is so that Google can understand what’s what’s the main like what’s the most important important thing on the page. That’ll be your headline right in your head or your different headlines. And then your paragraph tags. It’s important one because Google can see how it’s broken down the page can be read easier.

Okay, number two is you need to put your text into the alt text fields. So that’s alternative text. But once again, it helps for reading it helps people that are visually impaired. That sort of thing. Number three is make sure you fill in and edit your Meta Title and Description data. Because once again, that’s what Google’s typically pulling, if you have it filled in for when your search results page comes up. Like if you search something in Google, the little the first sentence you see and then underneath it, that’s the meta title and description. If you don’t fill that information in, they’re going to pull typically, the first copy From your webpage, but often that’s not optimized. So that’s not ideal. Adding them or altering the Meta Title and Description only takes a couple minutes. And if you do use WordPress or you know, other sites, there’s often a plug in I use Yoast SEO. But that just shows you exactly what’s there. Now, it shows you as you edit it, if they think it’s a good choice or not, you know, it has colors red, yellow, green, so it makes it really easy. Okay, next, you want sites to backlink to you, of course, by having great content, but in your own post, you need to link to other parts of your content. So or other sites that have great content. So what I’m talking about is in your pillar posts, let’s say it is about caring for a newborn. Okay, and you have a huge post all about that. But then you have some smaller blog posts that you do regularly, maybe one is about the first two months of having a baby or how to pick the best baby, you know, products and that sort of thing, or how maybe it’s how to get your baby to sleep through the night. Well in your main big, big, big pillar post. You can link to those other smaller blog posts that are related to your bigger topic. Okay, so you need links, you need links in your blog posts, especially are really long pillar posts. Next is, what are you going after? What keywords should you be using to make sure that the people that want your information can find it.

Now, you’re not trying to what they call keyword stuff your page, but you’re trying to clearly have keywords in there that are related to what people are looking for. Okay. So that’s the other big thing. And then I’ll give you an extra one. In your blog posts, it is helpful to add media rich content to your website or to your blog post. That can be videos, you know, short videos that can be social media embeds, you know, images, but just break up your content, because visually, it’s easier for people to read, write. And you can also do things like add bulleted points, add numbers, you know, like different steps, just break up your content, and then also have other ways to interact with your content other than just reading everything. That doesn’t mean you have to do a video, recording everything you talk about, you could just do some little snippet videos, or like I said some other social media ways people can share it on social media. Okay, but that’s sort of the gist of blogging. Really, you’re just coming up with? How do I want? What’s the type of topic I would talk on so that people would want to come work with me, you know, what is your business offer? Whether you’re a solopreneur, right, you’re a coach, or a speaker, or a writer or whatever you might be a consultant, or whether you’re a business with more people, what do you specialize in. So that is the first thing I’d recommend is come up with your three top three topics that you could do a blog post on, you know, in the in the next couple of weeks, and then plan out a, you know, day or a couple of days to do your research on these blog posts. And then set time aside to write them.

You know, maybe you start with one or two blog posts, it’s more of a standard, you know, range, you know that 2100 Strange, if you will, and then plan to do a pillar post, you know that much longer one that’s more like a 4000 word, post it plan when you have a little more time that you can work on that or work on it a little bit each day for one week, so that you can get it done. Of course, let your audience know, once you do get this blog post going. Just like you share with your your user base, you know, hopefully on your email list, and we’ll talk about that next week. But if you share with them, your podcast episodes, or what you have going on maybe a new course or something, you definitely should start sharing your blog blog posts out with your audience, you know, both your email list and then wherever you also hang out on social media. So it’s super important. So blogging is not dead. So many people wonder about that. Because let’s be honest, podcasting is kind of like the sexy thing at this point. You know, it’s the hot thing. And we’ll definitely talk about podcasting and some future episodes. I have a series coming up after this one that will talk about podcasting. Is it right for you is now the right time and what to consider before you decide to dive into that. But what’s cool about blog post is it truly is an evergreen content, meaning if you do the work now you will keep seeing benefits from it down the road for for years to come truly on the site that I started with that I talked about in my intro. So youtube.com even when we’re not regularly publishing new content, I get traffic to that site. Yes, it’s gone down because I’m not actively working in that business right now all the time. But we’re still getting traffic.

We’re still getting backlinks from other websites. We still get traffic from Pinterest. pins that I put on there years ago or other people pin. So the point is, is blogging is a unique thing because unlike podcasting or YouTube videos, yes, people can still find your content discover it. But if you’re not actively doing it, it’s harder to keep getting those downloads unless you’re getting on other programs and other shows, unless you’re really pushing people there. But blogging, if you have some really great content that’s getting found in search, or from other high profile websites that are linking to you, for your content. For years, you’re going to get traffic from those other sites or from Google. And like I said, people or companies that blog, you know, businesses that blog are getting a lot more leads per month than people that just have, you know, a couple page or a one page website, where you tell a little bit about yourself, but they really aren’t getting value. Right. So the reason you blog is because it is a long form content that’s evergreen, and it allows you to provide value to people before they work with you. So they start to see, Hey, okay, I get how this person might be able to help me or my business. Alright, so it’s really invaluable. It’s worth learning it. There are so many people that can help you through this, obviously, I work with people to do audits of their website. And also I have a course coming up in the next month that will be helping you do this and so many other things to really increase your traffic and your leads to your website. But really to get clear to on how you speak to people, what’s your message in that you’re really in your sweet spot. So obviously, that’s of interest, just reach out to me.

You know, what I love is helping people see that things that seem complex, often are a lot simpler than we think we just have to realize the reasons why we should do it. And then figure out what are the simplest steps to get from where we were to where we want to go. We don’t have to learn everything right away. We just need to know, hey, this is something I should start. Even if my first blog post or my first several aren’t that great? It’s okay. Right? Because we have to practice to get better at it. So here’s to stepping into blogging, and knowing that it is worth it for you to do so. And like I said, reach out if you have any questions. If there’s something I didn’t answer and you want to know, you know something further about this, let me know I’d love to hear until next time, have a great week. • Staying Focused as an Online Entrepreneur

Staying Focused as an Online Entrepreneur

You can tag me Kristin Pierce Fitch, and then put the hashtag podcast giveaway. And you will be entered into the giveaway for several of my coaching sessions. Hey there, I don’t know about you. But I have definitely been guilty of chasing shiny objects over the years. And the honest truth is often it’s when we’re frustrated in our business, maybe we’re not hitting all of our goals. Or maybe we’re in the messy middle when things are a little bit monotonous. And those shiny objects seem a lot more exciting to chase those new ideas. So on today’s episode episode, I’m going to talk about six ways that we can try to stop chasing the shiny objects and stay more focused on our business. So we can actually hit our goals and accomplish what we want to set out to accomplish your beautiful friend. Welcome to Business and breakthroughs.

And I know how frustrating it was to work so hard and feel like I wasn’t seeing more engagement opportunities or leads until I learned to optimize my online presence. After putting the systems in place, I was able to grow an online audience to over 10 million with 38 million pageviews and grew an email list to 50k, all with one brand, I want to help you do the same. Getting traffic online doesn’t have to be so hard, I created an easy to follow online growth system in online marketing strategies that work to grow your audience and increase your traffic, grab your coffee in a notebook, and let’s grow your traffic. Alright, here we go six ways to stop chasing shiny objects and stay more focused. So I think there’s different reasons some of us fall into this trap. I think for some of us, it’s because we’re still unclear on what our real business offer is our real focus on our message and who we really are serving. Maybe we’ve recently stepped into our business. So we’re still figuring that out. But often, it’s because we pivot, before we actually let it we didn’t test it long enough to see if it would actually work. So we didn’t give enough time to actually do the work to make the effort or the the offer to stick.

So the first thing, of course, is if we want to make sure we’re on the right track, we have to do market research with our ideal customers or users and see are we actually putting together have we actually created a program a plan, or a product or service that they actually want that will actually help them and that they’re willing to pay for. So that’s the first thing I would just say to you is if you’re feeling like you keep trying the next thing, you keep shifting in your business, and you’re not feeling very focused. Often this can be the first issue. So I didn’t want to bring that up. I’m going to talk about that and an entirely different different episode. But I thought it was relevant to point out here. So today though, we’re going to talk about six ways that we can try to limit or minimize chasing those new ideas, those new shiny things that get us excited, because let’s be honest, sometimes in business, the day in and day out, can seem a little bit mundane, especially when it’s not the beginning of the project, or near the end, we’re going to see the benefits of it, have it pay off. Alright, so number one is how do we stop chasing shiny objects. Keep an idea and inspiration journal, you need to have a place where you can do a brain dump when these ideas come to you. It can be a physical notebook, it could be a spreadsheet or in a project management tool, wherever you want to capture the information.

The reason we do this, and I recommend brain dumping for all sorts of things, get it out of your head and onto paper or onto a you know somewhere so that you can go back and review it but you don’t have to keep trying to remember it in your brain because you need to clear that stuff out so you can actually get to work on the things that are your goals currently. And what I like to do is every 30 days just review your ID and inspect ration list, and then have another tab or page for the ones that really seem like they’re ones you’d want to consider at for a future project or future effort. Okay? That way, you have your big brain dump sheet, which can just stay, you know, to one side, and then you have your list of things that are could really be feasible ideas down the road. And that should obviously be a much smaller list. But if you do that, you’re going to find that all those shiny ideas can kind of be put aside so you can really get focused in your business. Number two, set clear, achievable goals, what, what seems to happen is a lot of us and I’ve been there with you, we pick too many priorities and goals for our business. And so everything that I’ve ever seen, that people recommend, is that we should pick three top goals for this quarter that we’re going to commit to Okay. And so what are your biggest three priorities in your business? And what are the outcomes that you want to have happen from them? The next thing about that, though, is is are you picking the right goals? Because some of us, I think, pick the wrong goals.

Maybe it’s a goal that actually won’t bring in revenue for us. Or maybe it’s really not the most important goal, and we’re spending time on busy work that’s not actually helping us reach our quarter, or I’m sorry, our quarterly goals. So what can you do about that? Well, check in with other people to make sure that it makes sense, you know, you could talk to a business coach, maybe in one of your business groups. The other thing too, is sometimes, you know, when when you’re picking the goals, you have to make sure is it a realistic goal to hit in that timeframe? Do you have enough time to accomplish it? Do you have the resources you need? And then is it realistic? Is it actually going to get you what you want? Is it achievable? Alright, so that’s the second thing. Number three, use time blocking to stay focused. So if you look at your week, and then you have times blocked each day for what type of work you’re going to do to time batching, and time blocking, actually, actually, it will help you stay focused during that duration that time. Because often it’s it’s when we’re not sure what we’re supposed to focus on that we waste a lot of time thinking about, what’s the priority, what’s the priority, and then we probably do things like we jump on social media and other things like that. So the next thing is limit your distractions. If you’re if you find you’re doing everything, but work, take a 15 minute break to clear your head, take a walk, read something inspirational or listen to a podcast, and then commit to a focused 1530 minute or 45 minutes of work.

Or you can really hunker down, get, do a block of work, and then reward yourself for getting the block done. You know, maybe you say, Okay, after I finish this, next 45 minutes are our tasks, then I’m going to go on a walk or I’m going, you know, to go get a snack or whatever you might want to do. But you know, just but get set, get your mind in the right place. The other thing is, you can use apps that limit help you limit your distractions. So there’s many, many distraction free apps or plugins that go with your browsers you can use but a couple are. One that’s free is called leech block in G and it’s L e c h, black in G. And you can install that extension or plugin on your browsers, I have installed it on Chrome and I’m just testing it out. Now. There’s another one called cold turkey. And that actually allows you to even do things like block work sites at night after a certain hour and then blurt block, social sites and other sites that you don’t want to be going on to during the day. There’s one called serene, in, there’s another one called freedom and blast blocks distractions on all of your devices, I believe, including your phone, that one 699 a month. And then there’s one called forest, and then Rescue Time, which actually use that it’s a time tracking app. They also have a feature as part of their product that you can block different things as well. But that isn’t ideal for you. If you find that you’re kind of squirrely, you’re kind of jumping from thing to thing that is something that you might want to consider trying. I know for me, that’s something that I’m starting to implement more of because I really do need those super distraction free timeframes.

Alright, the next thing is track your big and small wins and your successes, because this helps us stay motivated. And it keeps us from being frustrated if we don’t see progress in our business in the way we want. You know, that could be revenue wins. That could be audience size. It could be your email list. I mean, there’s all sorts of things you can be tracking, just make sure that they’re the most important things for your business and where you’re at with it. Okay, next up is number. Let’s see, I think that was number five, review your progress at the end of the day and plan out the next day. So while I think you should have time blocks, and you should know what your goals are for the week, if you see what you had, what you got done today, you can see if there was anything that needed to get done that you need to move to tomorrow, okay, like, for instance, to me, I recorded two podcasts today, I wanted to get a third one done, I didn’t get it done. So that’s going on my list for tomorrow, because I’d like to knock it out. Alright, so that’s why we want to review at the end of the day. So we start off tomorrow, knowing exactly what we need to get done as our highest priorities. And then, the next thing is, oh, and I should have mentioned with limiting distractions, also, you have to limit how much and how frequently you go on social media. I should have mentioned that before. And then number six is accountability. You need to have accountability check ins.

And I would say either a partner or coach, if you don’t have a team of people that you’re checking in with regularly to make sure that you’re actually one hitting your goals, or I should say, hitting your milestones for those goals. But two is, is anyone keeping you on track? Is there anyone asking those hard questions like well did, posting 16 things on social media actually help you accomplish or help you reach that milestone? You know, so in other words, are we do we have the right goals? And then are we do we need to change them? If they’re not working? And how frequently should we change them? How long do we stay the course. And so these are six things that we can do to try to stay more focused in our business and more productive. And also to stop jumping for the next new idea or feeling like we’re aimlessly getting a lot of stuff done, we’re busy, but we’re not actually hitting our goals. And so let me just review those. Again, keep an ID and inspiration journal. Set clear, achievable goals, but not more than three for each quarter. Use a time blocking, time blocking for your calendar, track your big and small wins. Review the progress at the end of the day. Limit your distractions by using software or shutting you know closing everything on your computer except what you’re working on. Or use a timer. Write for set blocks, like 30 minutes, and then you’ll know that you worked, you push through for those 30 minutes. And then have accountability check ins, make sure you’re regularly you know, coming back to see if you’re hitting your milestones and that you’re going and reaching towards your goals.

And then one last bonus that I would just mention is if you’re tracking your wins and your successes, it’s important to go back regularly, you know, at least monthly and review those, you know, don’t just look at them that day that you write them down, go back and review because I think you’ll realize you’ve accomplished more than you imagined. And that feels really good to do that. And it keeps the momentum going even more than just writing them down daily or weekly. So that’s the only thing that I had mentioned to you. And you know what, share those sometimes in some of your groups, because, you know, I like to celebrate with other people and celebrate them and what they’ve accomplished. And I hopefully they like to do that with other people as well. And I just wanted to wrap up with this quick excerpt of the book, undistracted by Bob Gough. He says, What has got you distracted? What is the big ambition you’ve been trying to launch that seems to be stuck on the tarmac. I know it’s hard, much of life is hard. Get back at it. Keep showing up for yourself and the people who will benefit if you don’t quit. You are probably just a few sentences away from the next green adventure. Find a couple of people who will make themselves available to you be the kind of person who will be available to others and start pointing towards the stars once again. With all and wonder and undistracted and relentless determination. Start the countdown. The angels in heaven are itching to look at look your way and say, We have liftoff. Look at you go where will you land. So this is just a reminder, don’t let the shiny objects distract you get back to your purpose and your mission. And keep reviewing that mission to remind yourself of why you’ve stepped into what you’re doing. And get going. And wondering what actually works best to grow your email list? get leads and book more opportunities? Are you looking for ideas that will help you grow your brand.

I’m Kristin, an online traffic growth coach who built an online brain that reaches millions of people. I’ve worked in online marketing for over 20 years. And I know how frustrating it was to work so hard and feel like I wasn’t seeing more engagement opportunities or leads until I learned to optimize my online presence. After putting the systems in place, I was able to grow an online audience to over 10 million with 38 million pageviews and grew an email is 250 K all with one brand. I want to help you do the same. Getting traffic online doesn’t have to be so hard. I created an easy to follow online growth system in online marketing strategies that work to grow your audience and increase your traffic, grab your coffee and a notebook and let’s grow your traffic. Okay, let’s dive right in. Alright, so we’re really going to break this down into two or three parts. Okay. So here’s the deal. When you look at your website traffic, which we would do that through having something like Google Analytics installed on our website, it’s free, if you don’t have it installed, you literally just have to go to google.com/analytics. And you would sign up for, you know, a free analytics account. And there’s a snippet of code that would have to go on your website, obviously, if that’s something where you’re like, oh, my gosh, I can’t do that. There’s plenty people that can help you do that. And some of you are already going to have Google Analytics. And so what I’m talking about is in Google Analytics, there’s an area that that’s called acquisition. And then within it, it shows you where you’re getting your traffic from.

Okay, so that’s what we’re talking about today is how do we get traffic to our website? All right. And there’s really two main ways. Well, I guess there’s three if you pay for traffic, but we’re talking about organic traffic, so traffic you’re not paying for. The first is people may type in your domain directly. Because they have talked to you or you’ve shared it somewhere. Or let’s say you have a podcast, then you might mention the URL. So people might type in your domain directly. Or they’ve bookmarked it, because they’ve been there before. Okay. But the second way is that other websites, or social media platforms, or sites like YouTube, link to your website, because you have content there, or because you’re part of a group or, or a content article is linking to you because you’re a good resource for something. Okay. So that is what we’re talking about is how do we grow traffic from other sources, not just what we do on our own website to pull traffic in from Google search, or Bing or MSN or whatever it might be. Alright, so besides all the stuff we can do our to our own websites. And then on another part of the series, we’re going to talk about how having several long form blog posts can really help us also grow traffic. But once again, those are organic ways that we use our own website to get traffic.

This episode, we’re talking about how do we get other websites to link to us, which will help us get more traffic and leads. Alright, so the first is, Google will reward you for links that you have the I’m sorry, links that are being sent to your website. What am I talking about? So let’s say there’s an article at a larger site, right like a much more popular site. type in yours, that links to you about a certain topic. In other words, they might link to multiple websites or blogs, that link because that that other site ranks really high and has, you know, it’s, I guess you’d say it has more authority, it will give you more clout, if you will, for Google on how they PageRank you for the that link or the keyword the topics that that other site is linking to you for? Okay. And so how do you get those? Well, if you know that you have content, or you decide to create content for a certain topic, then you can reach out to sites that cover that and just let them know about your resource. Alright, so that’s one way. So for instance, on the site, I have a good resume.com, which is, you know, it is a content site. So it has a lot more content than most of us will like as for my consulting and coaching business, right now, I don’t have as much content, of course, but I am working on that that’s on my list of somewhere to do.

But we’re seeing the zoom, we have people linking to us for all sorts of content for our activities and our crafts and our things that we’ve created. So in that case, let’s see we have. So that’s a large site, and it’s been around a long time. But we get about 1000 links, or you know, 1000 different links are sent to us like traffic per month, from maybe, let’s see, like 30 other websites that are linking to a specific page on our website. And then we do get some that give us more traffic, like from social media platforms. And we’re going to talk about that part in a minute. But for instance, to my Kristin fitch.com website, which I’ve just recently launched. And I have I don’t have any blog content there yet yet, or long form content. Because I’ve just launched the primary pages, I’m getting, just in the last two or three weeks, I have 28 links that came from other websites like referring links, okay. So here’s how you can go about getting other sites to link to you. One is what I mentioned before is you can reach out to the owner of that website. The second is, try to get onto websites, let’s say that you’re a member of a certain organization or association will if they list your information, make sure they link to your website as well. Okay, and other ideas would be things like, if you write for or if you post your content on sites, like medium.com, or many other ones, right, where you can basically publish and write content, you know, articles that you’ve you’ve done, link back, of course, where they allow it to your website, you know, you’ll get traffic eventually from that as well. Another option is, is be a guest contributor on a website.

Now, you may have to start out with a smaller site or someone you know, maybe you do a guest contribution article, or you swap, you know, both of you right for each other. But over time, a lot of people if it’s the right target, they’ll find an outlet or a magazine or an online magazine, or whatever it might be online site to write for. So on occasion, you might see somebody that writes for entrepreneur.com, or Fast Company or Forbes, well, they just pitch that right. A lot of these sites do have freelance guest contributors, that will bring a idea to that site or that magazine. So those are other ways that you would be able to get more traffic to your website from these bigger websites that get so much more traffic than our sites would ever get, you know, because of the volume and the size and how much coverage they have of different content. So those are some ideas. And like I said, this is not a go out and do this all at one time. This is just something that throughout your year, you can be strategic about how you’re getting more traffic to your website. One because you’re posting in other places where you’re letting yourself be seen, right, you’re getting exposure, you’re also letting yourself be seen as an expert, or someone that writes on those topics. And then thirdly, over time, you will get some links back to your website from these other places. And then I did want to jump over and talk about links from social websites, social platforms a little bit more.

So this is everything from you know, Facebook, You Tube, could be Instagram, it could be Pinterest, or Twitter or any other sites. It could be other web sites that have video content, you know, whatever works for you wherever your audience is. But the first thing I want to say about this first and foremost is don’t try to be all the places and don’t try to put so much effort in lots of different social media platforms. It for most of us, it’s just too exhausting. And the payoff won’t be there for all the places. So choose the place that makes the most sense for the sense for the next type of content you have. And then also for who you’re trying to reach? How old? Are they? What? How do they like getting their content? Are they where you want, you know, and sometimes you do have to test out what you like, where you like being in and to where your target person is, you know, where do they show up. So for me, I really have always loved Pinterest, I was on Twitter, I’ve been on all the platforms at some point over many, many, many years. But Twitter was never really my thing. And surely, it could be someone else’s thing. And there’s certain industries that make a lot of sense for someone to be there. It’s just that I started there, when it first came out when it didn’t even have images or videos that you could post with it. And of course, for years, you could do that. So why does social matter? Well, like I said, one, don’t try to be all the places and don’t feel stressed out about being on social media.

But if you’re going to use it to try to get traffic to your website, then pick one or two places, and then post your content. And so for us, and I mentioned this a little bit, we get I get traffic to both of my my main big content website, you know, every month, we get 1000s of referring links back to ziggity. Zoom, and we get tons more saves on Pinterest, or people just save a pin of something from our website, but they don’t necessarily click it then. And then for Kristin fitch.com, which I’ve just, you know, recently launched, I’m only getting a few. I’m not getting a ton of traffic there yet per month, but I’m only posting a handful of pins right now that come back to my website, but people are seeing are starting to see those pins. But you know, and so if you have a Facebook community, and even if you don’t, you can post something, sometimes to your own Facebook profile. But you will start seeing in your analytics that you’re getting links from this. So for Instagram every month, for my Kristin Fitch, I do get traffic to my website. Now it’s not a big number right now, and I don’t need it to be a big number. But some people right will read one of my posts. And then they will go you know, normally I’ll say Lincoln bio, and most people know that, you know, at this point Anyways, if they’d been on that platform, but they’ll then click my link in my bio, in my page that it goes to lets them go straight to stuff I have going on, they can join my email list, of course, they can get straight to my newest podcast episodes, they can go and learn more about how to work with me.

And then if I have any cool things going on at the moment, you know, freebies or things like that. So once again, I will mention it in my post on occasion, you know, how where can they find more about this topic that I wrote about or I talked about. So the reason the social media links matters, because Google will give you more credit, if you will to have those links, because they’re coming from bigger sites. So it’s giving your site more authority. And it’s saying to Google, Hey, someone else thinks that this page on your website, matches for what this person is searching for. In other words, it’s not just them saying, hey, this seems to have the right topic and enough content that the person is looking for, they now have third party validation that you are getting traffic for that that topic or that page, you know, and whatever that page is about. So that’s why it’s super important. Okay, so let’s review and then wrap up. The reason this topic is so important is because, you know, I one person that I’ve talked with, and I’ve done some coaching with before said, Gosh, if you build it, they don’t come in, it’s true. You can’t just put a website up, don’t do anything, you don’t do any of the back work, you don’t do the things to optimize your website to get found. And then you’re not showing up anywhere else for people to know about you. There’s so many websites, just like there’s so many podcasts and everything else, there’s always gonna be lots of content. So the only way you stand out is by showing up places and telling people and then sharing what you’re doing.

That’s how it works. Now, obviously, if you’re already a well known person, where you have a huge following a huge email list, maybe you’re an author, you’ve written several books, of course, you are already going to have a bigger following. So it’s going to be easier for people to find you or look for your content, because they’re already, they’ve already established that pattern behavior. They’re already coming to your website, they’re already getting your email. That’s amazing. But for everybody else who still has a new business, or they haven’t really used their website as the business tool, it can be you have such a huge opportunity. And the great news is is this is something you just build on over time. And I promise the work you do each year each quarter each month to improve your website to add some really great content and like I said, it doesn’t mean you have to add content all the time. But write a really long bigger content piece on how you can you know on an area that you know a lot about got, you know, how can you help your ideal person, right about that, you know, and have a couple of those posts, because over time, you will get traffic to those pages. And of course link to your other pages as well in that post. But it will be people that are looking for exactly what you’re talking about. And so you’ll start being matched really well with who it is you’re trying to reach.

When we just have a several page website that’s just like, hey, here’s my services, here’s about me just a little bit. And here’s how to contact me, here’s my program, you know, or whatever you’re doing. That’s amazing. But you’re not getting people to your website that way, unless you’re just pushing stuff, other places, and then they’re finding you through the other content you’re producing elsewhere. And that’s okay, too. There’s obviously more than one strategy to get people to your website. And the goal of your website, of course, is get them to sign up for your email list if they’re not there already, so that you can communicate with them directly. The other is get them used to coming to your website to find out about new things you have going on. So start establishing it as a pattern. But if your website never changes, or if you never have anything new to offer, then there’s no reason for me or whomever is visiting your website to come back. And surely I’m not saying start off with oh my gosh, I have to update it all the time. That’s not what I’m saying. If you have a different program, or even something new to offer, it could even be a blog post every month, let them know that or some people send out a weekly email with a little blog post or a how to favorite things, devotional.

But if you get them used to what is it you’re delivering, and how frequently, they will expect that then so whether it’s via email, or it’s on your website, you just want people to know how how often are you going to be doing something right providing value. And to that you’re going to do it consistently. If you say every Friday in your email box, you’re going to get this you know, tips from you, then you need to make sure you get those out to people every Friday. Now if that’s too much for you, that’s okay, don’t start with that maybe you start out with just once a month, maybe you need to start off with once a quarter until you have the time to do it more often. So the idea of this, this series is not to put pressure on you and feel like oh my gosh, I have 1600 things to do. It’s giving you information, it’s giving you knowledge, so that as you have time to work on your website, as you have time to try to grow your business, you know some of the strategies and tactics to do it in a way that will allow it to be evergreen, in a way that allow you to get traffic, even when you don’t have time to post something new. Even when you don’t have time to go and get links from other directories, we still have people referring late or sending links to us sending traffic to us, that probably have been around for over 10 years, 12 years. So what I’m saying is, that’s nothing new I’m doing to keep that, you know, there’s people coming to our website for that specific content. In other words, I don’t have to keep doing the work for all the links we already have. Now, if I wanted to get new links or new people, then I might have to pin new pins.

Obviously, I’d be sending an email reminding people of the content we have for whatever seasonal or whatever is going on right now. But the work you put in now the work you put in in the future, or if you get someone to help you, it will pay off tenfold over time. So the things I’m telling you is because these are strategies that have worked, you know, I’ve been in industry for over 20 years in many different ways. The same things still work, yes, they’ve been tweaked to Yes, they’ll keep being tweaked. But the overall concepts have stayed the same. All right. So once again, make sure that you’re getting traffic from other online sources. So that can be of course, if you’re on social media, you can get traffic from wherever you’re at. You just have to make sure you’re sharing with people. What content do you have in why should they visit your website? You know, show them why there’s value there? Why should they click your link, and then get links from other websites. This can be everything from doing guest contributions or guest writing. This can be because you write other places like a medium.com type of website or platform. Or this can be because you are part of different memberships, or you do guest posts with people you know, in a similar or same industry that you’re in. So all these things will help drive traffic to your website, which will help you get leads over time.

So it’s super important. And like I said, you don’t have to implement everything in this series right now. But it’s important to know the information so that as you say, oh gosh, I do need to put a little time into my website, you know, some of the things to work on. Okay, so good luck. • Feeling Stuck and Unsure About Your Business?

Finding Inspiration and How Your Gifts, Talents and Skills Intersect to Build an Authentic Business

Hey, and welcome back to business and breakthroughs. This is Kristen, and I’m really excited for today’s conversation. We are going to talk about how do you find your intersection? How do you find your secret sauce? And how do you blend your ingredients together your the things you offer the world? So they come together in a way that you feel so aligned, you feel like yes, this is it. And people want to come work with you because you have connected the dots, if you will. Why are we talking about this today? Because I continue to talk to so many people, and where they’re stuck, where they’re struggling is here. They know things they’re good at, they know what direction they think they want to go into business. And maybe they’ve started it. But then they get stuck. They question what they’re doing. Or maybe they need to pivot because of what they’ve done in the past and where they think they need to go. This is what we’re gonna jump into today. And I cannot wait. Hey, and welcome to Business and breakthroughs. This is your host, Kristen, and I am so glad you’re here with me today. I cannot wait to dive into the topic and get going with you. Today we’re going to talk about how do you find your secret sauce? How do you step in the world with more curiosity. And I just hope this episode just is exactly what you need to hear today. Alright, let’s dive right in.

Here’s the crazy thing about life. I had actually written down to talk about this topic, because it’s come up in conversation with several people recently, they’re still working on starting their podcast or launching something or launching something new or doing a pivot in their business. You know, one friend of mine is a writer, but she’s about to launch something new. Another friend has a podcast but would like to do more speaking coming up. So there’s all these twists and turns like it is for all of us. But I had written down to talk about find your intersection. What’s your secret ingredient? And how do you bring them together in the world to make a living or to make a better living? Well, so I had this idea. And then I happened to listen to a podcast, I think it was on Saturday by Martha Beck now, I have found her podcast before but it’s not when I regularly listen to but maybe I should. But I listened to one recently called Find your muse. It’s episode 82. And I’m going to tell you a little bit about it. And then we’re gonna dig into the topic today, because they’re so aligned. But I literally, I needed to hear her episode, it was literally like music to my soul of where I’m at currently, because I’ve been feeling a little burned out, I have been just worn out lately and just not feeling the productivity. I wanted to, you know, feeling behind and some of my work.

So the gist of the show the gist of her podcast was, if you first of all, it’s that you should just go towards what you interest. You know, like, in other words, her whole life, she’s like, I didn’t do what someone told me to do. I didn’t try to fit into a job like, Oh, I’m going to become a lawyer. She just always followed the things I’m about to tell you to where she got. And if you don’t know her, she’s a writer, MIT. She’s written many books. She’s a sociologist. And she’s also a well known world renowned life coach. She has some amazing programs. And then I think she also has some sort of Life Coach School. But here’s the gist. She said, how do you find your muse? In other words, how do you find your inspiration? How do you stay inspired. And so she gives us three kinds of ideas on how to do this, or how to keep doing it. The first is a concept that she says, is to follow the heat. And what she’s talking about is what interests you What do you feel excited about. And it might be that you have to try several things at once to see which thing interests you versus which thing feels like, you know, cold or, or, you know, it’s not really warming you up, it’s not getting you excited. And so one of the ways we kind of find our way through life, the one of the ways we find our inspiration, which often then leads to the next project we should be working on or the next will work is by following our heat. Or if you think about it, it’s like a game of hide and seek or I mean, like you’re hotter, you’re colder, you know, when you’re near the person.

That’s what we’re talking about. In other words, open your eyes and be aware which things get you excited when you when you work with that product that service you talk about that topic. You know, what things do you read or seem to be drawn to? That’s the heat, right? That’s the thing that you could just keep doing and it interests you. So that’s the first thing she talks about. The next is, let’s say you can’t find your heat. Let’s say that you can’t. You can’t even decide which things are kind of like getting you excited. She says, then what you need is you need rest, she said depressed people think it’s bad right in our culture. But she says no, if there’s no heat, you need to physically sleep. Because it basically allows your brain to go to work. And it lets your brain kind of let go of all the things that it doesn’t need, okay? Or if you’re numb, you feel numb, you’re not getting excited, and you can’t decide what’s warm, and what’s cold for you to go towards sleep. And she says, You can’t get too much sleep. It’s our body’s way of healing, right? It’s our body’s way of repair, of renewing. Okay. And then she said, once though you feel rested, and you can start to sense what things you’re drawn towards what things you are interested in. She said, she calls it follow your nose. But really what she’s talking about is be open to new experiences. And I guess I’d say, have a childlike wonder, I guess I’d say is the way I understood what she’s saying.

She explains, you know, a child kind of threw a park in there, just kind of like, oh, my gosh, look over here. Did you see that bird? Oh, I’m gonna go towards the stream right there. They’re literally awakened to everything around them. And they’re going to take it in, in other words, take it in through your senses. And if we all just showed up in life more like that, I mean, truly, how wonderful would it be, I mean, think about even in the kitchen, and someone’s cooking food and my gosh, cookies, and maybe like a tomato sauce, you walk in the door, and you’re just hit with those smells as aromas. It’s much like that. So when you’ll be drawn to go see what that’s amazing smell is, what I’m saying is taken, what she’s saying is take that sense of like, let me follow the smell and do it with all your senses in your life every day. But if we were more open to not being super stuck in routine and structure, we would actually know the things that interest us the things that we became, you know, deciding, like, gosh, I would really love to go walk down near the water that day, instead of sitting at my computer for eight hours, if I don’t have any, you know, appointments or calls, coaching calls. So the next thing she says is the third thing, follow your curiosity, right? And she says, if you can connect to curiosity about anything, it removes our fear, our worry. And then we can ask the question, why is this happening? Or why do I like this? Why is this interesting to me? Okay, and so once again, if we’re more curious in life, this could be about our relationship, about a topic, maybe we’re getting super into a certain topic right now of books, we’re reading documentaries, you know, a movie, but we need to be aware of those things, okay. But if we do these things, you know, her point is, we won’t feel stuck like that, we just can only go into law medicine. And she names a third category, and I can’t remember what it is. In other words, we don’t have to have a career that someone says we have to have, it doesn’t have to fit in a box.

It truly can be our, to our own making, and it can keep changing. And she shares a story about a female comedian, I think it’s cuz she’s like a stand up comedian, I guess. And she explains how she keeps doing what she wants. And she’s always doing different things. But she always calls it stand up, okay. And she basically, Martha Beck says, if you have a deep passion, keep following it. And you have to, because you have to have the heat. If you don’t, then go towards the thing that does give you that hate that curiosity of interest that wonder, okay, and then she has this great comment or thing she says what she says, Wait, you’re not sampling the whole universe to see what you love? Oh my gosh, imagine if we all from childhood on had that approach to life, how much more alive we would all be? How much more happy we would all be. Right? Because I think so many people we do get stuck in obligation, we get stuck in this sense of routine. And that we have to make a living and we somehow have been trained, we’ve been brainwashed to think that it has to be in some nine to five job or even if we already have our own business, it doesn’t have to fit in certain constraints.

Maybe you’re a you hate working first thing in the morning, maybe you’re you know someone that loves working at 11am You know, to six or something or maybe you say I only really am good for four hours a day to really work that’s okay. Maybe you were wired that way right because of the type of creation that you’re you’re doing you’re making. Okay, so why did I tell you all that? I told you all this because I have recently been feeling that need for rest. I’ve been feeling that need to remember what all lights me up and of course I noticed Some of the things, but I felt disconnected from some of them lately. And let’s be honest, a lot of us feel I don’t want to use the word guilty. But we feel like when arresting, we’re not being productive, which in our society, we have, many of us have been trained that we need more productivity time instead of more rest time. But this, this podcast episode, it just really I listened to it twice, because for me, it was so good. And it really just reminded me to pay more attention to myself to my body, to my thoughts, to the things that I feel that urge to move towards to go do to get off the paved path on, you know, in into the woods, if you will. Okay, so how does this have to do with finding our intersection? How does this have to do with coming up with where our, you know, our gifts and our talents come together? Well, I think it has a lot to do with it. Because if we’re in touch with our, you know what, what we enjoy, if we’re in touch with our curiosity and our wonder, and if we are rested, then it’s going to be a lot easier to look at what I’m talking about today.

And I want to share this little excerpt from the book, Big Magic from Elizabeth Gilbert, about this topic, she says, If you don’t have clear passion, and somebody blithely tells you to go follow your passion, I think you have the right to give that person the middle finger. Because that’s like somebody telling you that all you need in order to lose weight is to be thin, or all you need in order to have a great sex life is to be multi orgasmic. That doesn’t help. I’m generally a pretty passionate person myself. But not every single day. Sometimes I have no idea where my passion is going off to. I don’t always feel actively inspired. Nor do I always feel certain about what to do next. But I don’t sit around waiting for passionate strike me. I keep working steadily, because I believe it is our privilege as humans to keep making things for as long as we live. And because I enjoy making things. Most of all, I keep working because I trust that creativity is always trying to find me even when I have lost sight of it. So how do you find the inspiration to work when your passion has flagged? This is where Curiosity comes in. I believe that curiosity is the secret. Curiosity is the truth in the way of creative living. Curiosity is the Alpha and Omega, beginning in the end. Furthermore, Curiosity is accessible to everyone. Passion can seem intimidatingly out of reach, at times, distant our flame accessible only to geniuses and to those who are specially touched by God. But curiosity is a milder, quieter, more welcoming and more democratic entity.

The stakes of curiosity are also far lower than the stakes of passion. Passion, makes you get divorced and sell all your possessions and shave your head and moved in Nepal. Curiosity doesn’t ask nearly so much of you. In fact, curiosity only ever asked one simple question. Is there anything you’re interested in anything? Even a tiny bit, no matter how mundane deign or small, the answer need not set your life on fire or make you quit your job, or force you to change your religion or send you into a fugue state. It just has to capture your attention for a moment. But in that moment, if you can pause and identify even one tiny speck of interest in something, then Curiosity will ask you to turn your head a quarter of an inch. And look at the thing a wee bit closer. Do it. It’s a clue. It might seem like nothing, but it’s a clue. Follow that clue? trust it, see where Curiosity will lead you next, then follow the next clue in the next in the next. Oh my gosh, how many of you can relate to those words? I surely can. And I think that’s the point is, as humans, this is the condition most of us are in because we’ve gotten disconnected. Right? With our, with our creative, curious selves, that part of us. And I do think that, you know, God is really here to partner with us, right to allow us to create amazing work through you know, these gifts He’s given us and through the inspiration that we feel from, you know, this all inspiring curiosity and creativity that we are given, but we have to get in touch with it.

Okay, so what happens if you’re in a place where you don’t feel like you know what your secret sauce is? You don’t feel like you really know where your intersection is that sweet spot in your business or or just in what you’re going after? What do you do? Well, the first thing I’d say is, let’s get a piece of paper and a pen. And let’s write some things down. Okay, so I’m going to give you the main things to write down and most of you have probably done some version of this at some point. I want you to write down these these little topics or categories. And then later you can fill them in. It’s right down gifts, right down talents, write down skills, passions, pain, struggles for what you’ve ever overcome, okay? And then write down what two people say I’m good at. Now, before you do this, and like I said, you can either pause the show, and then fill these out, or you can do it later. I want you to really think deeply about this and make sure you put some things in each of these buckets. But next, don’t just think of things that you’ve gotten paid for in the past. I mean, those things are great, obviously, to put down right as your skills, your abilities, whatever it might be. But many of us have gained skills, or we have an ability that either we just had naturally, right, we had a knack for it, if you will, it’s one of our gifts or talents, even if we’ve never gotten paid for it. Or maybe you you gained the skill working, you know, being at home, or maybe you did it volunteering, it doesn’t matter.

If you got paid for it, it matters if you develop something that other people are like, Oh my gosh, are so organized, or you are so good at putting events together, you know, or you everyone comes and talks to you about, you know, their personal struggles, and you you lift them up, you make them feel better, you know, so the things can be where you have to think about it. But I want you to really think about these things, and then put down interest to so what things are you drawn to? What things what kind of content do you consume? And what are we talking about, for instance, for me, when I was little, I wrote poetry and lyrics, but it wasn’t something I shared regularly with people I just was drawn to do it. In college, I liked my religion in my philosophy classes, my classes on morality. I’ve had a passion towards taking pictures for as long as I can remember, not when I was little, but maybe by college or after. I love being in conversation with people. I love gift giving. And I love food for sure. But people come and talk to me about their lives, right, and I help them shift their perspectives. And so these are just some of my indicators. Of course, I’ve worked in tech for 20 years, I’m good at taking something complex and making it a more simple idea. I am obsessed with certain types of books, right?

But not everybody is I love Christian Christian inspiration books. And I like other sorts of books too. And I have poetry books, things like that. But that’s not what everybody has interested in, you know, what pulls at your heartstrings, that pain struggle or what you’ve overcome. Maybe you’ve been divorced, maybe you have dealt with childhood trauma that took years to overcome. All of these things are indicators. And if we can really look at them and start to see hmm, what what area am I working in? Or what area have I been wanting to move into. But these things will help inform us on where we should be going towards, and pay attention to what pulls you what gets our attention? And then as we interact with the world, what are you most passionate about? Right, that my friend has a gift? What are you passionate about? And, you know, one thing is how do you find your intersection? Well, I think it’s what is it that you’re good at? What is it that you literally are so passionate about that? You? You just you kind of obsessive about it, right? And then where is it that you think people are saying that they need help that you could help them with? And remember, this could be anything you could you could be the most amazing Baker, or you could be the most amazing coach to help people with their children that may be have certain maybe they have special needs.

And you’ve worked in that area. Maybe you have taught in that area. Maybe you’re a parent that has gone through that you know, with your child, but what is it? In other words, how can you dis I mean, how can you connect these disparate things? Where do they come together? And maybe you don’t know or maybe you’ve been trying out coaching, but you still can’t seem to find that sweet spot for yourself? My guess is is because you’re you’re just trying it all instead of really getting quiet with yourself looking at all these different you know, what are your gifts or talents or skills, your interests, your passions? In seeing Where do my passions and interests intersect with my skills in that I want to be a coach because you might be trying to fit in a box, you don’t need to like, oh gosh, I’m going to be a business strategist type coach, I’m going to be a life coach. Well, those are so broad and big and vague. That one, you might not feel super connected to it. And two, people aren’t going to really be drawn to you for it, because it’s too broad. So how do you Yes, niche or niche niche down however you want to say it with these? These areas? Right, this intersection of yours?

How do you blend your signature ingredients into what you do? Okay. And so for instance, another exercise is that you take all those things, and you think, you know, who do you serve, but you keep going down four levels? And what do I mean by that? Like, you can’t just say like, oh, I help people that need life coaching. It’s that you Who do you help? Okay, I help women under 50, let’s say, okay, women under 50, who are typically moms who work full time, and they’re trying to navigate a big transition in their life. Do you see I’m saying, so keep niching? Down? Who exactly you help? And then how you help them? Are you helping them make a transition, you know, in their life? Are you helping them step out and become more bold, right in this in this next part of their life, the clearer you get, the more specific you get, the more it will match up with your skills and your gifts and your talents, that intersection, and that you will start finding more success, because it’ll make sense to people and it will make sense to you, it’ll feel you’ll feel feel more authentic in that place. The other thing I think happens is, we often try to fit in. And this has happened to me before too. I tried to say, Oh, I’m this and it even now with this podcast. As I’ve been rebranding, I’ve been honing it, I still have resistance, I’m still working through what I’m going to be when I grow up on this podcast, right? Because I think I niche down to so much, because that’s how he’s being guided by the program I was in.

But it’s starting to feel I started to feel like no, no, no, no, this isn’t it. So I’m going to be pulling it back just a bit. It’s, I still educate, you know, on some of these topics. But my heat wasn’t there as much, right? This is a sort of thing I love talking about. This is really how I like helping people. And yeah, tech, of course, I can help with that. But that’s not where the heat is. Okay, and so for me, I’ve got to keep going towards the heat, I gotta keep twisting and turning, turning. And that’s okay. And I need to be honest about it. Because so many of us find ourselves on this path where we go down one little alley, and then we find that it’s blocked off or it’s cold. And we’re not sure how to go forward. You know, and we don’t want to embarrass ourselves, right? We don’t want to see, it seemed like, it’s silly that we keep trying new things. But, but if it’s blocked, or it’s cold, I have to turn around and go back to the main road and find the next path that is opened, that does have the heat. The other thing is, talk to people about it, ask them, gosh, what am I what do you think I’m good at? If you thought I was going to do something as a business, you know, as my thing that I made money that I could do my whole life, what would it be? And then listen to what they say and really accept what they say.

Because often we hear somebody say something, and we, we don’t really believe it about ourselves, especially if it’s something we’re stepping into that we’ve never done before. The other thing I would say is what if we just took the pressure off ourselves? What if we did follow the things that excite us? What if we tried new things without the expectation of the outcome? What if we only said yes to the things that we said, Heck, yeah. I’m so excited to do this. If we didn’t do the things that we weren’t really, we didn’t feel that sense of wonder, that sense of curiosity, that excitement about it. And I don’t mean that everything in our business or in our lives is going to be Yay, it’s so fun. But I’m saying are we have it? Do we have things in our life everyday that we’re excited about? And that we’re getting curious about and we’re following that kernel? That’s the question. And you know, I think it’s we have to keep being willing to learn right to be a lifelong learner to be a beginner and I think it’s okay we should commit ourselves to being more you know, a filled with wonder that childlike sense of excitement about our days. shake up your routine a little bit, you know, get out of your comfort zone. Get away from your computer. or your zoom calls or whatever it is, you’re doing a lot of in just do something different.

That you, you have that little inkling that says, Hmm, what would happen if I did this today? What would happen if I picked up the paintbrush, or I went and had a conversation with somebody I’ve admired, whatever it might be. So what I want to leave you with today is just, you have so much ability. The question is what’s holding you back? Is it because you’re stuck in the mundane, you’re stuck in routine, and you’re not even seeing the amazing things right around you that you could literally grab, you’re not giving yourself credit for the things that you’re actually so skilled and gifted at? Because you’re still questioning how you should move forward. So instead of questioning how you should move forward, just take a little step. Take a little step and say, You know what, I am going to just try it. And my goal is you just want to do it long enough so you don’t give up and you actually grow from it. Right? You can you just keep trying things and you’re going to learn. Okay, so that’s it. I can’t wait to see if you check out Martha Beck’s episode, I just think it was so life giving for me. 5 Secrets to Grow Your Website Traffic

Hey, and welcome back today is part two of the secrets of optimizing your website to increase your traffic and leads. I’m so excited because today we’re going to talk about SEO basics. We’re going to talk about why the words on your website matter and even the words you can’t see those, what we call keyword phrases, and why things need to be unique and relevant. So today is going to be such a packed episode, you’re definitely gonna want to take notes, so grab a pen and paper.

Okay, here we go. We are going to dig into the second part of the secrets of optimizing your website. And like I said, grab your pen and paper because you’re going to want to take notes. Now doing this via a podcast. With audio. Obviously, I’m not going to go as deep as I will in a video format because there’s just a lot to cover in some of you may have different website or blogging posts or platforms. I’m sure some of you are on WordPress. Some of you might be using show it with WordPress. Some of you might be on Squarespace, or let’s see where else you might have an empty shop. There’s all sorts of things you might have. I’m primarily going to focus on WordPress sites that could be WordPress with show it. And Squarespace as well, I will I will just touch on that as well. But those are sort for me kind of the core two that I want to talk about. But all of these principles all these tactics apply to any website, you know, like content management, hosting, or platform that you’re on like a WordPress, yes, it might be in a different spot, it might take you a little bit more to find it. But it is something that you can do. You can make these changes or improvements to your website to really step up how your website’s getting found in search, and eventually so that it can help the right people find you you know about and learn about your services and products. So let’s dive in. We’re going to cover four parts today,

we’re basically going to be talking about setting up your website. So it’s the SEO basics. Okay, so we’re going to look at why your page title and description and your meta. It’s your Meta Title and Description why it matters, where you can find what you currently have and how to change it. Number two, we’re going to talk about your page and post URLs or names. Number three, we’re going to talk about keyword phrases over just keywords. Right, so a little bit longer, you know, multiple words together as a keyword phrase. And then we’re going to talk about things like images that sometimes get overlooked, and why each of things these things matter. The words on your site matter, but the things you can see, and you don’t see as a visitor, so it’s kind of like the guts or the roots of your entire website. And when we set these things up properly, and we understand these tactics, we can apply these same strategies over and over and over whether it’s for the site and the business we’re currently working on or if we have a future site As we roll out or future business, so that’s what’s so exciting about these principles. I was literally helping people with some of this 15 plus years ago. And yes, some of the things change, as we all know how rhythms are constantly changing. But these evergreen tactics are so similar to what they’ve been. So the great news is, is yes, algorithms change. But what you want to do to optimize your website, it’s similar. And of course, there’s improvements. And there’s new recommendations that come out regularly. But this will give you a good baseline or a good framework to start with. So let’s dive in. And I do want to mention the last episode, that we I’m sorry, the episode we the part one episode of this, if you didn’t listen to it, I really encourage you to listen to it, because I’m talking about how can we have a tech and growth mindset so that you’re ready to hear these other episodes and not feel, you know, like, I have no idea what Chris is talking about, oh, my gosh, I have so much to learn, that might be true. But it’s baby steps, you know, rolling in to talk about four high level things today. And here’s the other great news. If you join my facebook community, I will be over the next month posting videos about these different episodes. So if you’re a visual learner, which many of us are I am, then those videos if you’re, you know, in my community, and right, it’s a free community. So as you have to do is click the link at the bottom of one of these episodes in there’s a link straight to joining the community. But those videos will be invaluable, but only people that are in my community or people that are on my email list. And I’ll be sharing with them as well will get this content. So definitely jump over there, join my community. And then, like I said, I’ll be sharing videos to really dig in a little bit more for you. So let’s get started. First things first. Alright. So as I mentioned, the first thing that you can do to improve your website to get more search traffic and also get the right people that are looking for what you offer is to improve our titles and descriptions. And I’m not so much talking about the title you put on the page. Like it’s my it’s your homepage, because you’re not going to necessarily have that as a super long URL. But we’re talking more about the meta title and description. Okay, and why does this matter? Well, search engines need it to be specific, searchable, relevant and unique. Why is that? If all of your website pages had the same title and description, as far as Google was concerned, they wouldn’t know what page is relevant for matching that with the user that searching for something. So you might think, Well, why can’t my about page just say about, you know, Kristin Fitch? Well, because no one’s most people aren’t searching that they’re searching for what you do or how you can help someone. So that’s why we need to go into our platform, our content management systems, and we need to actually manually create our meta title and description or improve what’s already being added there. Okay, so what am I talking about? Well, basically, there’s two ways that you can see what Google’s part currently pulling up for you for your website, for each of your pages. And this is such a simple strategy that so many people still don’t know. So two choices here to know what your current meta title, your current title and description are, as far as search is concerned, like like Google, and Bing, and those kinds of things. All right, what you’re going to do is you’re either going to go to google.com. And in the search bar at the top, you’re going to type in site, si te colon, and then your domain name.com or.co, or whatever it might be, and then hit enter. What will come up is all of the pages that are associated or part of your website. And what you’re going to do is you’re going to print that off, print off all the pages, so whether your site’s three pages long, or 25 pages, or whatever, just print off, you know, at least the first 20 You know, those will be your core, your core pages. And when you print those off, what you’re going to do is you’re going to look for what it has as the title, that’s the thing that’s more bolded it might be in blue at the top and then below it is a little description. What I like to do is I like to take my paper and I like to write what I want, how I want to improve it, right I want to put what it should become. And as an example, if I wanted to have my homepage, talk not so much just about home for Kristin fitch.com. That’s not really going to help me get searched or get found. So I’m going to have something more like website optimization coach or SEO coach or on line growth coach, right. So in other words, I’m going to put that kind of information and then how I help people related to the area I’m working in. Okay, so that’s what we’re talking about. But just print that off. Because like I said, in the video, I’ll get deeper into this. But it’s, it’s important that you start here. Another amazing tool, if you want to have a more hands on place to work on this is called Mango tools.com/free-s, eo dash tools, forward slash, SC RP dash simulator. Now what that tool lets you do is it actually lets you put in a page, and it will pull up what the title and description are for you currently. And then you can kind of work there on that page with what you’d want to be the title and description. So that’s another way that you can find out what you currently have. Here’s the good news. Even if you’re like, oh my gosh, okay, I can get this far, I can print the page, that title description for all my pages, you’re probably thinking, I’m so overwhelmed. I have no idea where to edit this on my website. I’m gonna give you a couple examples. But once again, once you have gotten this far, there’s people that can help you, you can post a comp a question in my community, and I’m happy to try to answer based on your platform, you know where that information might be where you’re going to end it. But so here’s the deal. Once you have your page title, description, and you make sure it’s unique, it has searchable words in it that people that you’re working with are looking for, and it’s relevant to the content of that single page. Okay, then what you’re going to do is you’re going to go into where you edit your website, the back end, if you will, or the dashboard, it’s sometimes called. And if you’re in WordPress, there is a plugin, if you’re not using it, that’s great. But there’s others called Yoast SEO, in that puts on every page or post of your website, it puts an area where it’s super specific, it’s an SEO tool, and it tells you what the title is or what it’s going to pull in the description and you’re able to edit in there. And it gives you a color green, yellow or red, I think as to if you’re hitting some of the requirements, like the length of it in that sort of thing. So that’s super helpful. But on in WordPress, if you have that plug in or you can install the plugin, Yoast SEO, then on each page, in each descriptive I’m sorry, in post, you can actually edit that title and description for each page and then make that that change that save.

If you are using Squarespace, they do it a little bit differently. They have it under marketing. So they’re SEO titles, right? That’s what they call them search engine optimization titles. It’s under marketing for you if you’re a Squarespace user, okay. And it would be you know, the same thing that you’d still edit it for the page that you’re trying to improve. The other great news is you don’t have to do this all at one time. Go edit your homepage, maybe go edit one of your main pages about your services. Or maybe you have a really long post about how you help people. Go edit those. And you know, as you have time to work on this, you can then check off those and then add or improve these other ones. All right. So that’s the first thing is we want to look at what our page title description is now that Google, you know, the search engines show up for us. And we want to improve those so that we’re more likely to get found in search. So that mango tools I told you about, that’s what we call a SERP simulator, and SERP is search engine results page. So in other words, how does your title and description so show up on the search engine results page? And just to make a point, Google is really the only search engine you really need to worry about, even 20 years ago, or, you know, yeah, over 20 years ago, Google was, you know, ping of the search engines. And it still is I think the share is it’s something over 60% Just for Google as far as search traffic. So that’s one that matters. If you do well on Google, you’re going to be fine and the other search engines, so don’t worry so much like well, what if what if it shows something different in one of the other search engines like DuckDuckGo or Bing? Don’t worry so much about that. Okay, number two. So number one is, what is your current title and description for each of your web pages? When you go to google.com and search, then you want to improve that title and description so that you’ll rank better in your in the search. Number two is what do you currently have for your page in posts as the URL the name right so if i Like done a webpage on your website, what shows up in that, that URL bar at the top? All right. And what you don’t want is you don’t want to say something like article 25, or like the date in the month without a specific name right of the page. You also don’t want it to be short, in a lot of cases, especially if it’s a article or a blog post. You don’t want something like website tips, and only have fat, if it’s something more specific. So an example would be as you want it to be multiple words, with the underscores in between the words, because for search that matters, it needs to be able to read it as specific words. So an example would be how to optimize your website for SEO. Right? So that would let the search engines find my page. And as long as I have content on that page that’s relevant. And it ranks well, meaning that it has enough content that it that Google decides my page should show up in a higher search than maybe someone else’s page that maybe doesn’t have a lot of information. So there’s multiple prompts here. But what matters is your posts right to your articles or blog, blog posts need to have really specific and a little bit longer URL, so that Google is going to give you credit for having that name, and that it’s searchable, you know, so what you wouldn’t want is blog post 2020, SEO all together, that’s not really going to benefit you. And so if you make these changes, then that will help you also get found in search. And I would also point out, the more content you have on the page, right with information that’s relevant, though, to that title. And to that search, what someone might be searching is obviously going to benefit you. So you can’t just have a page title. And then you have no content or very little content, it’s you’re still not going to rank for that.

We’re going to talk about this another day in another series. But everyone should have at some point, several long format blog posts or articles on whatever your core business focuses are, that we call these. Well, it’s long form content, but we also call them pillar posts, P I ll a our pillar posts, because this is something where let’s say you were doing a guide, let’s say I was doing a guide on optimizing your website for SEO. There’s so many people that have done articles on that. They’re really long, right? And so, and there’s ranges, I’ll talk about this later. But it’s something like between 20 504,000 words, right is an example of a pillar post. So they’re not short blog posts are long, they have a lot of information for people. And they’re formatted very specifically to try to really boost Google recommending that page to people if it’s matching what they’re searching for. That’s not something you have to do today. I’m honestly, just as I’m rebranding, I still have those on my list to do in July. So I haven’t even done mine yet. For this current my Kristin fitch.com site. So once again, that’s not something you have to do now, but I did want you to be aware of it, because those are the other sorts of things that will help you rank. Okay. So number one is, you need to know what your meta title and description is. And then we want to improve those number two so far was, what is your page and post URLs or names? Do they have underscores or dashes so that the specific words can be searched? And did they have enough relevant words so that Google’s gonna give you more credit for that, that post or that page? Number three, keyword phrases over keywords? Okay. Words matter? Well, here’s the thing, if we just put in what we think, but it’s not what people are searching for, then we’re never going to increase in our ranking. And then we’re not going to ever get more traffic. And so for instance, let’s say you have a, let’s say you do cooking recipes. And let’s say that you have a recipe that’s seafood gumbo. Well, that’s great, but there’s, I’m sure there’s many many, many, many people that have a seafood gumbo recipe. So that’s great. You can definitely have that. But if you can get it a little bit longer, you know a couple more words that are part of yours. Then when someone searches maybe it’s a spicy seafood gumbo recipe, maybe it’s Louisiana seafood, spicy seafood recipe or something. But then you’re gonna get more targeted traffic and you’re not trying to compete with the people that are ranking for the most popular word. Another example might be if you put in what’s a example here, maybe you put in you know, maybe you’re an author and you put in a different a certain type of genre of books. Well, there There’s 1000s, and or maybe millions of people in that genre most likely. So it’s just it’s not specific enough. So a keyword phrase just means it’s multiple words that are a little longer. Or sometimes we say like a longtail. Instead of just like baby clothes, right? That’s super broad and big. And it’s unlikely unless you’re a big content website that you’re going to rank for that, at least on the first few pages, at least. Alright, so keyword phrases, there’s lots of ways you can do keyword research to see what should you be, what words or keyword phrases should you be using, you know, on your page and in your content, you can either go to In Search Google Keyword Planner, and then within their advertising suite, they have an area where you can put in keyword ideas, and then it will pull up for you different suggested ideas, and then how much search traffic it’s getting. That’s one way and it’s free. It’s really not the end all be all. Google also has a Search Console. And then they have a Google Trends where you can look up what’s trending as far as popularity and traffic as well. There are others with their paid sites you can do I think, like a free trial, but then it’s it’s you pay for it. One is a href keywords explorer. It’s an amazing tool. And but I think it might be like $100 a month. So some of these tools seem pricey, but they’re very powerful. And so once you’re getting serious about trying to grow your traffic, it’s something you could consider, but it has so many amazing tools on this a href keywords Explorer. And I will link to these when I do my post on this. But once again, there’s lots of ways to find out what words are, you know people are searching for. In other words, you don’t want a keyword that no one’s practically searching for. Okay. But you also don’t want to be

just that basic keyword where everybody it’s too vague. So you’re never going to show up. That’s why that keyword phrase is somewhere that you want to shoot for, you want to shoot for that. Okay. All right. So number four is, and it’s often overlooked. You need to care how your images are tagged and how your images are if they’re going to show up in Google. So here’s what’s happened to a lot of people. They never change their image name. And it might be like image, oh, oh, six, two, dot jpg. And then they don’t do anything when they upload the image to their website to help that image get found in Google search, or Google images. So the first thing is I like to rename my image name so that it’s specific to the photo, right? It’s related to what my page and what my photo is about. And then you can, you should put in a little description in your alternate or alt text. So when you upload your photo, there should be a little area that shows like caption or alt text, you can fill those in. Because remember, Google, even though now with AI, they can sort of categorize images, for the most part in search, it’s still through those words, words that are associated with your images that are going to help you get found in the Google image search. So why wouldn’t you do this? It’s something that once you start doing it, it’s no big thing. But for so that’s one thing is moving forward, you can do this. But then you can also go back through your website, just page by page, unless you have 1000s of photos, this shouldn’t really take long to go into edit your photo and then make those changes. If nothing else, they’ll definitely put in your alt text, even if you don’t change your image name. And like a city can also add a caption, if it fits your website, some websites, it looks good and other websites, it just makes it messes it up aesthetically. So you can decide that based on where the image is that. Okay, so the highlight here with all of this is your website will rank higher, you’ll get more traffic over time. If your words if you every place that you can put in relevant words you do. But two things I want to note, one, I’m not talking about keyword stuffing. So meaning you don’t want a page that just has tons and tons and tons of keywords but no actual usable content, no, you know, guide or useful tips for somebody, you want it to be a page that somebody would come to and they don’t just leave or bounce that they would actually get value in using, okay, that’s the key is create content or information about what you do that will be relevant to the person searching. Otherwise, they’re just going to leave your site and it doesn’t matter if you’ve got more traffic they’re going to they’re not going to be a match for who you’re looking to work with. The second thing is, as I mentioned, you need to just everything needs to be unique and searchable, relevant and specific to that page or to that image. That way Google can match the searcher know the person looking for something with the best possible pages, all right, that’s what matters. So let’s review. One, you want to know what your search engine page title description shows up as now. And then over time you want to improve that to, you want to make sure that how your page and post URLs are showing up? Do they have a separation between the words and doesn’t have enough words? So Google knows what your page is about? Number three is, are you using keyword phrases over too big of keywords that you’re just never going to place for? Unless you’re spending a lot of money? Or you’re a huge, huge content site that’s been around forever? And then are you going actively looking for what keywords you should be using? And then also asking your audience? What are they searching? What are they doing, you know, and ask them for specific feedback. And then number four is images. Don’t forget about images and video on the way that we tag things the way that we talk about them right in their title, their alternate text that matters, and it’s super important. One last tip, I’ll tell you, it, this is going to be covered in a future series,

I’m sorry, a future episode of this series. But when we also post content to YouTube, you know, or other places like that. And we make sure to use the tags, we give it a good title and description. And then you know, we get with Kingo back to our website, we get tons of kudos, we get tons of, you know, credit, if you will, from Google, when we’re linked back from these bigger places. And so that’s another way to drive traffic, and then Pinterest as well, which we’re going to talk about both YouTube and Pinterest in the future and a future episode. But that is huge. And it’s amazing. But you will get traffic from Pinterest, especially if you put pins there that makes sense. And they go back to your website to a specific piece of content. And it’s it’s kind of evergreen. So once you create it and you pin it on occasion, people keep finding it because Pinterest is a visual search engine, if you will write for ideas and inspiration. So that’s it. That’s everything for today. And I would just tell you, I know it’s a lot of information we covered today. But really, let’s just think with it, think about this as getting your feet wet, start getting introduced to that. If you can write a word, a sentence, you can make all these changes, or you can get someone to help you with these changes. But if you don’t know about these things, then you don’t even know to ask for the help that you would need to make these improvements. Like I said, remember, this is kind of like, much like a tree, your the things I just talked to you about. It’s like your routes, right? If most of this is behind the scenes, things that you might not see, if you just look at someone’s website, you know, from a visual perspective. But these are the things that will matter so that Google and the other search engines can match you up better with users you’re trying to or visitors you’re trying to find. And I just hope that you will embrace the fact that this is new information and learning that’s growth, right? We are talking about techy things and I know that can be a little bit daunting, it can be overwhelming for a lot of people. Just remember I’m here for you, I want to support and encourage you as you grow your business in a simple way. It’s simple, because as you learn these skills, you can keep reapplying them, you can keep using them, you know, unlike social where everything’s always changing your your website, your email, you know, the things that we’re gonna talk about building a community, those are things that you’re you are in control of. And if you learn them, even if you then hire it out, you’ll understand what’s behind these concepts and these strategies. So I’m so excited for you. I can’t wait to see the growth that’s about to happen for you in the coming months. And I do want to share a little excerpt from you from the book chasing vines by Beth Moore because as I thought about the website and the roots of this, this core stuff i i thought of her book and I wanted to share just a little bit of that book with you. Okay, so in her book, she talks about a plant expert, if you will, and I thought this was really interesting. So here’s what she says. British author Jamie Goode has an insatiable passion for the fruit of the vine. He holds a PhD in Plant Biology, bringing expertise alongside his years of experience to the banqueting table. Best of all, he writes about grapes with a sense of familiarity. Like he knows them personally. And here’s what is said they’re making the vines struggle generally, generally result in better quality grapes. It’s a bit like people play someone in a near perfect environment, giving them every comfort and all they could ever want to satisfy their physical needs, and it could have rather disastrous consequences for the personality and physique. If you take a great fine and make it make its physical work quirements for water nutrients easily accessible, then somewhat counter intuitively, you will give you poor grapes. And she says, Good goes on to say that good soil gives a great final choice. And given the choice, it will opt for the easy way instead of going to the trouble of bearing fruit. Oh my gosh, that’s so good. But basically she’s saying, give the grapevine a favorable environment and it will choose to take the vegetative route. That is it will put its energies into making leaves and shoots. Effectively, it is saying, this is a fine spot, I’m going to make myself a home here. It won’t be too bothered about making grapes, but make things difficult for the vine by restricting water supply, making nutrients scarce, pruning it hard and crowding it with close neighbors, and it will take the hump, it will sense that this is not the ideal place to be a great fine. Instead of devoting itself to growing big and sprawling, it will focus its effort on reproducing itself sexually, which provide means making grapes. But I think that that’s so good. And she says In other words, as long as a great plant is feeling comfortable and unchallenged, she will leave lethally leaf, she will award leaves, leaves and leaves upon leaves to her sweet natured host,

she will bear reasonably leaves in her happy hearts content. Eventually, she’ll become so thick with leaves that the hungry passerby will observe there’s an area cluster to eat. So I think that’s much like, you know, maybe your work ahead on optimizing your website on getting more traffic on growing are leads through your website and through growing a community. No one said there isn’t going to be growing pains, or that it’s going to be super easy for you to work through these steps and maybe to get frustrated a little bit. But I promise if you put in the work. And I’m going to hold your hand along the way, if you put in the work though, these results are going to pay off the website, I started with my mom that I co founded in 2008 ZigBee zoom.com. I haven’t been regularly working in that business for some time. Although I do plan on getting back two more hours on that. We still Yes, the traffic has gone down a lot because we aren’t adding more content. And we’re not really spending time there. So compared to what it was, it’s much lower, but we still get, you know, a tons of traffic and even just from Pinterest on old pins. So there’s no new content, we’re just other people are repeating our content mostly think we get 30,000 referrals from Pinterest on average a month. But that’s work we did years ago and it’s still showing up. It’s still working. So I promise learning these tactics, learning these strategies and then applying them and as you get better tweaking and improving these things. It will bear fruit for you and your business, I promise and also being part of a vibrant, encouraging community of people that are there to help you grow and learn and be lifted up. So I hope you’ll join us on our Facebook group.

  • How to Build an Authentic & Engaged Community

5 Tips to Grow a Thriving Group

Today we’re going to talk about building community. We’re going to talk about things I’ve learned over the years as I build communities around me both in person and online. We’re also going to talk about a couple of the highlights or takeaways from the book, find your people by Jenny Allen.

And the reason I wanted to talk about this today is, I think it’s so important to encourage you to build your community to build the people around you. And I want to share some ideas for how you can do that in a really authentic way in a way that brings value to the people in your groups. And that lets you really build those connections and even you know, friendships and superfan level of interest that people have in the community you’re building that people want to be part of it.

So definitely tune in today and take some notes if that helps you. But I can’t wait to hear about the community you’re building and how it’s going for you so far too beautiful friend.

. For some of us, we probably have already started building communities. But these will be good reminders for you if you already have a community, or maybe a couple of new tidbits or tips. And for those of you that haven’t started building a community yet or not really, these will be some great ideas for you to get going. The thing I want to mention, though, is don’t worry so much about the number of people in your community. I recently just started a new Facebook group and I have other groups for other things that you know, have 60 people or 1000s of people in it. This group I just started has 15 in it, because I’ve just launched it, you know, in the last, I don’t know, really the last two weeks. And haven’t you know, I’m growing. It’s really because I didn’t have the bandwidth yet to pour into the group. So I’m starting to move more people in there. I’m starting to promote it more. So that will grow. But I just remind you, it’s more about the engagement, that connection that is about having a huge number of people. We have other platforms for that. Okay. All right. So the other thing I want to tell you is one of my favorite things to talk about is community, and relationships and just, you know, serving people being of service to the people around us. And so I think this conversation will really, I hope fill you up, I hope it’ll feed your soul in a way that remind you how important our relationships are and how important it is that we pour into. Hey, and before we jump into today’s conversation to talk about community building, I did want to let you know, I am starting a contest that if you post a review for the podcast on Apple podcasts, if you don’t use Apple, then just post to one of the other platforms, screenshot it, join the Facebook community and share it in your community tag at Kristin Fitch and put a hashtag podcast contest. And I will be picking several winners in July, that they can either pick a business coaching session with me or a website audit and leads roadmap and coaching session with me. So it’s a super amazing giveaway that so many people love because it’s just one on one with me on a zoom call to dig into either all of your online things, or we can talk about community building or we can talk about some other challenge that you need to work through. So I’m so excited about it. The link to my Facebook community is at the bottom of every episode. And like I said, you just need to do a review. And if you’re not sure how to do that, join my community and tag me and I will tell you how I have a video step by step. So I hope you enter into that contest because I can’t wait to work with a couple of you in July for that giveaway. The people

Alright, so building a community or a village or our tribe, like I said is so important. because we all need support, you know, in our lives, or we, you know, in our faith lives, in our personal lives in our business lives. And yes, a lot of those times those things can overlap those areas. But it’s just so important one, it’s because humans are made for connection, right, you really can’t thrive without it. For instance, one study, when they’ve looked at people that live the longest, of course, eating well, and you know, exercising, that kind of thing is super important. But even more important than that, they found that people with deep, meaningful relationships, so people that are social, right, that had at least a couple of close family or friends that they connected with, that was one of the key indicators of people that often lived the longest, assuming that their health was, you know, decent. So I just think that’s amazing. And it lets us remember how important connection is how important community is, how important learning from and growing from other people is, and how important, you know, being able to know we have other people that see us other people that are there for us and other people that are supporting us. And, you know, lifting us up when we need to be lifted up. All right, so let’s dive in. The first thing is, as I just mentioned, community is all about connection. All right, so I’m going to share some tips with you today, that I hope will help you really build authentic communities that really align with your, you know, the work you’re doing in the world. And that will align with the people that you draw in and bring bring forth. But before I do that, though, I just wanted to encourage you, if you still haven’t found your tribe, or your village, you still haven’t started a community, or maybe you haven’t found communities that you want to be a part of that are giving you what you need. Just keep trying ask other people that you respect, or you’ve been, you know, connected with online, where do they hang out, you know, online, and in person conferences, all the things. I’ve been some amazing in person conferences, there’s ones that I haven’t been to, but I would love to get to at some point. I have local communities I’m in and I have online communities, I’m in both small groups, you know, just a couple people where I connect with regularly and then other larger groups. So it’s really important. So I just wanna remind you don’t feel discouraged, if you that this is a harder thing for you. Because we all go through different seasons. And some of us are better at reaching out or finding paths to these communities than others. So don’t get discouraged. You know, reach out, ask me, I’m happy to share lots of places that I’ve been, or communities that I’ve joined or tried, you know, that sort of thing. So and I’m sure other people in the art community that’s on Facebook currently, would also love to share with their thoughts with you. All right, so we’re going to talk about five buckets, five areas to build a thriving community. So here are the buckets, we’re going to talk about what you should do in your, your group, your community, if you will. So I think it’s, you know, you want to have some level of education, you know, educating are a learning component.

Number two is opportunities to connect. Three is things that inspire right the community, inspire each other, lift them up, for give people an opportunity to promote, support, and celebrate or cheer each other on. And then five, you have to be willing to be shown being authentic, vulnerable and honest, we need to show up in these communities where we’re speaking where we’re at, and not the perception we want to have, right, so important. So let’s dive into these. The first thing is, do you have an element of education or learning or teaching in your community. So this could be videos, this could be lives, this could be bringing guests in, you know, it could even be you know, PDF handout, it doesn’t matter so much the type of education or learning you’re doing is that you offer it so that people are super clear when they join this community, what they’re going to get from it. And today, I’m more talking about a, you know, communities that might be free, but but most of these things pretty much go in a paid community as well. And I would just share with you, I think both are great. And I think there’s a time and a place for both types of communities. Let’s see, I’m in communities that are you know, free groups, and I’m in plenty of other communities that are paid, you know, memberships or commute learning communities, or masterminds I’ve done so I think both are of such good value. And so there’s nothing wrong with it being free or paid as long as it’s super clear what you’ll get get from the community. Okay, so education, are you providing regular content in some form so that could be video can be audio, it could be handouts, it could be lives, but are you regularly per writing things that educate, teach, or are learning opportunities for people hands on, it could be a workshop, it can be, you know, bringing on some of your community members and doing a audit with them, you know, or just a conversation, you know, a q&a, anything like that. So that’s the first thing, do you have an education or learning element in your community? And do you do it consistently, because one of the things you have to do is show up consistently, whether you’re running a podcast, or you’re an author, whether you run a community or membership site, you have to be consistent, and you have to tell people what to expect when to post regularly and keep reminding them of the schedule, you know, what should they expect, each week, each month, each quarter or each day. All right, next is connection. People want to be in your group, because they feel like they belong in everyone wants to feel like they belong somewhere, you know, so if you’re a super creative, you know, cool cast, creative soul, a faithful soul, you know, whatever your thing is, make sure that’s tied into your community, that it’s super clear who your communities for, and then you’re gonna get a better group of people that connect right at a deeper level, because they have some similarities. So connection, you have to one, reach out to those types of people, and you have to have content that they would be interested in, but don’t even nella. In other words, make connections with people that have something in common, right, there has to be a commonality. And doesn’t mean everything has to be in common, but something but don’t even know don’t be for everyone. Because I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, you’ll be for no one at that point. You need to be a unique community in some way, right? Your personality, what kind of content you’re teaching, the kind of things you do the fun, the interesting. So you know, just make your connection based on those interests, you have those unique things, those unique elements, and people will be drawn to it, I promise. Okay, next is do you have an element of, you know, aspect of your community, where you and how you can inspire people, this can be through, you know, coming on and doing positive messages or sharing quotes or scripture or stories. It could be interviews with people in your community, you know, that are inspiring and uplifting. Maybe it’s their journey story, or their success story or overcoming obstacles story, you know, but it’s story, it’s words that inspire us, it’s stories that inspire us. But that is actually how humans learn. And how we recall things, how we connect to things is three story more than facts. So every time we connect on the level of story and connect on the level of life, we’re going to build that deeper community. All right. Next is, do you have a chance

or an opportunity for people to regularly celebrate their wins, to share their wins to celebrate each other, to support each other and, and their business ventures, and to promote themselves or to you for you to promote them? Now, groups are very different. In some groups, I’m in even some paid groups, they have a separate topic, area or category that’s for CO labs, like club collaborations, or, like if you, if you’re looking for podcast, guests, you can post there, you know, for that information, or you can share maybe some workshop you have coming up. I mean, other groups that don’t allow promotion are that sort of thing. But I think you just need to set it clearly in the roles. But I think on occasion, you should have allow people in that certain post or in a certain category, you know, like a folder or something, to share that stuff. Because at the end of the day, if it’s all about the community organizer, and their promotional stuff, it can get old, you know, we all want to think that we don’t only belong, but that we have an opportunity to connect with other people about what we do specifically. So make sure you have that element. Because you get people more engaged when, you know, I can share, Hey, I just had this great podcast episode come out that I think you might really like if you’re doing X, and someone else might be like, Oh my God, that’s so cool. This is what has happened to me, right? Or they might say, Wow, I did something similar. Maybe we decided to collaborate on something. So I think that’s super important. Have the space or an opportunity for them to share, you know, in a deeper way that’s connected to what their purpose their work in this world is. And then number five, you have to be willing to be authentic, to be vulnerable and honest, be sincere, and then you have to show up to be of service. What can you do go above and beyond especially when you’re building that community and when you have the bandwidth? How can you help people ask them what else do you need? Hey, what would Do you like to hear more about? What would you like me to go live on? What are you struggling with? ask people questions and keep asking questions. And then, you know, respond with more content have more value in those areas, and go above and beyond especially at the beginning, do you have the ability, the space, when your group small, to respond to people’s comments to tag people and ask a specific question to email them directly. All right. And if you do, if your group still small enough, you can do that, that’s amazing. You can also get, you know, other admins to help you. Or, as you get too big, you can then have just like maybe like a once a week post, or something like that, so that you could respond or someone could just to one post a week, and you’re not having to jump on all different kinds of posts or threads. The other thing is, is getting no you have to get to know your people. So find out more about them Don’t just post stuff, and then you really don’t ever get to know like, what do they do? What’s, what books do they love? You know, what are they into? Because the more we know that, the more we’re going to connect with them, and that they’re really going to connect with us. And that space is going to become just, you know, magic, if you will. And I wanted to share with you an excerpt from the book that I mentioned at the beginning of the podcast called Find Your people by Jenny Allen. And I thought it was just so poignant for today. Let’s see. She says she starts out says CS Lewis said, friendship must be about something even if it were only an enthusiasm for Domino’s or white mice. Those who have nothing consumer nothing. Those who are going nowhere can have no fellow travelers. Whether your attend school or manager home or manager company, work was meant to bring fulfillment and promote thriving for those we love and know. But we complain about our God given jobs, and we gossip about the God given people we’ve been given to do the work that work beside worse, work has been redefined as a hollow pursuit of money rather than a pursuit of human thriving. This is so not the point. My favorite podcast Pastor Tim Keller said it this way. Work is the rearranging.

Sorry, work is rearranging the raw material of God’s creation in such a way that it helps the world in general, and people in particular, thrive and flourish. This pattern is found in all kinds of work. Farming takes the physical materials soil and feed and produces food. Music takes the physics of sound and rearranges it into something beautiful and thrilling that brings meaning to life. When we take fabric and make a piece of clothing, when we push a broom and clean up a room, when we use technology to harness the forces of electricity, when we take an unformed naive human mind and teach to the subject, when we teach a couple how to resolve relational disputes. When we take simple materials and turn them into a poignant work of art, we are continuing God’s work of forming, filling in subduing whenever we bring order out of chaos, whenever we draw out creative potential. Whenever we elaborate and unfold creation beyond where it was, we found it. We are following God’s pattern of creative cultural development. And she says, so we start with a mission to bring thriving. And then we look for collab collaborators to build with it is the greatest and messiest fun. Maybe your days are filled with toddlers and college classes, or PTA, tasklist. Fine. But what if those places become mission fields and the people in your places became teammates? Don’t you want to be part of something exciting and meaningful? Are you sick of living in your bubble of self fulfillment and meeting your own small needs? What if you got to wake up every day with an assignment and a team of people by your side? You can? This one truly is as simple as a change of perspective. Oh, my Gosh, seriously, how good is that, especially in relation to building community in relation to showing up and collaborating with people? And yes, in relation to seeing that the work we do no matter what it is, is so important. It’s because it’s always been about people. It’s always been about connection, and about fellowship, and about seeing other people and being of service, no matter what our job is. And I love this quote by Seth Godin that reminds me of actually that you know what I shared with you from the book. He says, art is too important a term to be used just for painters and sculptors and playwrights and actors, and architects of a certain type. No, I think we need to broaden it to to graphic designers and salespeople and bosses, to lay preachers and gifted politicians, and occasionally to the guy who sweeps the floor. Art is a human act, something that’s done with the right sort of intention. Art is when we do work that matters in a creative way in a way that touches them and changes them for the better. Oh my gosh, what if we remember these two examples as we built communities? What if we remember these two examples as we stepped into the world to do our work, whether it’s for ourselves, and we feel like the work is super meaningful, or whether we are working at a fast food job, or a preschool or, or we are raising up our children, whatever we’re doing, we have impact in other people’s lives. And we have an opportunity to educate and connect, inspire and to support and celebrate those people. So let’s all show up and do a little more than that. And I promise we will be building thriving, beautiful communities together.

  • 7 Keys to Having a Tech & Growth Mindset -Online Tech Doesn’t Have to be Hard

The other thing I want to tell you is starting today for the next six weeks, I am going to do a six part series on optimizing your website. We’re gonna do a tactical and strategic episode each week on how you really get your website optimized for SEO to really grow organic search without a lot of effort. These are evergreen tactics you can use from now until you know the end of this business like forever. And then we’re also going to talk about how do you really step up your website to be your most important business tool to beautiful friend.

So today before we can dig into five of the six part series that are really specific on tips and tactics you can take to optimize your website, we have to talk about the first of the six part series, which is having a growth in tech mindset, ah, this is so important. I talk to people weekly, who say things like, Oh, I’m so bad at Tech. I don’t understand tech, this is so hard for me, I get frustrated, I get stuck. I so get it. But it’s something that the world does. It goes round with tech, especially online tools, online processes, websites, all the things. And so what I want to do is help you shift that mindset so that you’re ready to really take on these next other five parts that we’re going to get into in the next six weeks. And I think this is really that cornerstone this is if you can make this shift, I promise the things I teach you, you can figure out. And the great news is, as I go through this series, I’m going to provide a simple cheat sheet of what to do. And of course, I offer also, you know, coaching in this area, and I’m going to be releasing a course later in July, that literally holds people’s hands to help them with all of this. But you can definitely do all of this on your own as well. It really just depends on if you’re someone that this makes a lot of sense to you. Or if you’re somebody that really needs to dig in deeper with very specific steps, and you need someone to hold you accountable. Alright, so let’s jump right into our growth and tech mindset. All right, here we go. Here we go. We’re going to dig into seven different things that I think will help shift your perspective when we think about tech and how we approach tech and how we feel about all things, online tools, online processes, website, social, all that good stuff. Okay, the first is, I want you to know you are capable.

Did you hear that you are capable even of tech things. Okay? No one’s asking you to become a developer or a web designer. We at EY should say I just want you to know that you are able to learn the steps you need to learn to build and grow your business online. And you don’t have to be an expert in there’s always information or people that can help you. You just got to get clear on what it is you really need right now to move forward or to get your business going. So as I said number one is you are capable. Stop telling yourself negative self talk like Oh, I’m so bad at Tech. I don’t understand. In that, you don’t have to understand everything, you only have to understand the parts you need to operate your business. And what I will tell you is, less is more. Let me say that again, less is more recently, I had to have some of my websites, I basically had to have been cleaned the I had some malware that had shown up and I had to try to remove it myself. But mount malware is really tricky in the sense that it’s kind of hidden in little nooks and crannies. It’s kind of like if your kid got lice, it’s not easy to get rid of at least not right away. Well, malware when to get in your site, it’s like an infestation. And the reason I’m bringing this up is I needed to use an expert, I needed to pay somebody. And because I had multiple, multiple websites that cost me $500, which, if you think about it is actually a steal of a deal, because my sights got cleaned. It was a direct one on one, you know, professional that helped me it wasn’t through some big company. But the reason I’m bringing this up is he makes text simple. In other words, he doesn’t even have an online form or way that you pay online, when you first reach out to him via his website. You can email him, but then you he calls you, he calls you on the phone. Yep. So if someone that is a master at you know, basically making your site free and clear of malware or malicious software, he calls you on the phone. Okay, so once again, tech doesn’t have to be hard, you’re capable, in less is more. So he literally then emails back after he cleans the website with exactly what he did it. It’s like a text, you know, text, email, what he did, what he fixed what he found, and then recommendations for you moving forward. Now I’m somebody that was able to maintain my site’s myself, you know, update the theme, the plugins, the version of the content management system. But if someone can’t do that, obviously, then he might have recommended a company you could use to do that. But this example illustrates to you less really is more, you don’t have to do stuff the same way everyone else is, if you only need a link, or you don’t even need a link on your website for people to pay you, you can just email them a link to your pay pal. Guess what that’s perfectly okay, until you get to such a point where you’re so big or making so much money that you can have someone help you with that. So first of all, you are capable of getting done, what has to get done in order for your business to operate online. In Less is more, don’t try to do at all, we only need to do the minimum the things that will actually impact our business operating. Alright, number two is and I just mentioned this one, but tech doesn’t have to be hard. Truly, we think it’s hard because there’s always new things. There’s always new tools. There’s always new processes, there’s new social media, there’s new algorithms. But guess what, I’ve said this probably for 20 years, you don’t have to be everywhere, and you don’t have to master everything. You just pick the one place maybe the two places that match best for what kind of content you have, and who your customer is, and that you have time or bandwidth for and be there. For instance. Of course in the past, because I’ve worked in this industry for a very long time. I’ve been on pretty much most social media platforms like I’ve at least been on them even if I don’t continue to do them. Years and years ago, I was on Twitter. I didn’t like Twitter, it was not this is before Twitter even had photos and videos, it was when it was just 140 characters. I hated it. I loved being on Pinterest. And then when Instagram came on, I loved Instagram because to me it’s visual and I’m I’m drawn to that. The beauty I’m drawn to the images. But my point is, you don’t have to be all the places and so tech doesn’t have to be hard, because you don’t have to do all of it. Actually, I would challenge anyone to say if you actually would just specialize in one or two things you’re going to have such a bigger impact and more momentum in those places. Instead of trying to do be everywhere and try to master all the you know different little tweaks that you have to do for the different platforms, getting frustrated and wanting to pull your hair out and actually not getting real impact. For instance, let’s go back let’s go out of the tech world for a minute and talk about a company that’s mastered this Chick fil A regardless of how you feel about them. I love Chick fil A I love their food. But they years and years ago they didn’t have the budgets to be on TV and radio billboards newspaper they didn’t have a budgets to be everywhere and actually make a big impact. So years ago, they decided we’re going to literally buy the heck out of billboards, like you would drive down the street, you know, at least in a lot of areas I’ve been in, you would see Chick fil A plastered on the billboards, they knew they could, basically, you know, they had enough of a budget marketing budget to buy out billboards, but they didn’t have a marketing budget, that would have a big impact on TV. And when they happen on TV, it’s for something very specific, like they were, they were a football suit a bowl sponsor, so it was very specific, okay, it’s the same with you, you don’t have to be able to places, tech doesn’t have to be hard, because I’m only asking you only master or learn how to do a little bit of it, the ones that fit best for you, who your person is, and what kind of content you provide. And I’m happy to talk about this in further episodes, because it’s really important. Number three,

just like I said, you don’t have to do at all, you can pause or put aside the things that aren’t urgent, or aren’t needed right now for you to figure out. Okay, so what I like to do is I tell people, do a brain dump, or make a list of all the things you think you have to do related to your online business, to tech things to tools, to, you know, things, I think you need all the bells and whistles, write them all down. It can be everything from like, I need to update my website, I need to get an online payment program, I need to understand how to do Instagram reels, whatever it is you think you need to do or figure out write it all down, put it on one side of your paper, draw a line. And the other side, what truly is the most important one or two things you actually, if you actually did now could impact your business or making income. If it’s not broken, if it’s not something that’s urgent, or you can’t do it a simpler way, then it can probably stay paused or be put aside for now. And if we capture the list, it won’t be stuck spinning around in our head, trying to figure out which of these things do I work on, and oh my gosh. So pause it and put it aside. But you’ll still have a captured list. So you can always reference back to it. Okay. The next is start building or finding your tech Dream Team. And this does not have to be people that are you don’t have to have necessarily like a web developer or a software developer. But start finding either freelancers, or people that create templates for you know, understand how to Canva or maybe they know how to do you know, Squarespace or whatever it might be, start finding those people ask other people or groups or in for recommendations. And as you find someone good, you know, have that person, you know, available and work with them, you know, on a project basis or on a one time you know, gig and maybe you need help with a certain thing. But have those you know, start building that team of people that can help you with your tech needs as they come up. Once again, this doesn’t mean most of us don’t need a full time person in these areas. unless we’ve really grown our business to scale, you know, much bigger in the millions. And even then sometimes people don’t have full time people, they just use freelancers or contractors. But start building those people up, start asking people, even before you need some of those things, start thinking about them, you know, and if you find someone’s good at one thing, like maybe with your design, find out what else they do well, they could help you with down the road or who else they recommend. Alright, so once again, you’re you’re capable, and tech doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to do all the things and you don’t have to be in all the places and you need to start building out a team of kick butt tech people and when I say Tech, I mean just savvy people, right? So to be online marketing, it can be people that are really good at automations processes, or they can be really good at code or design. But just start making a list of people that are just amazing at what they do. It could be copywriters, it could be email marketers. Just I like to have a spreadsheet or it might be in like my I use monday.com for capturing a lot of those things in doing automations keep it there but just have it somewhere where you start collecting this person is amazing for this thing and then how do you reach them? Number five, I love this one. So I don’t know if you know her but Ali Worthington is a Christian, inspirational writer and speaker. She’s also a coach and has all sorts of other things she’s doing. But she has the saying and she says with God and Google we can do anything. And many, many years ago she had yeah thinks she has four sons. Four or five, she has several sons. And she, her kids were young and her husband lost his job. And at the time she was staying at home. And she knew his prospects were not looking good. This was many years ago now. Anyways, she started Googling, like, well, could I make money doing X, you know, and she started searching things. In through using Google and prayer and guidance from God, she literally started building a business. And fast forward many, many years. She’s run conferences and wrote several books, has accessed successful speaking career membership programs, so many things. Oh, podcasts, she has it all. So I love that thing. But it’s true. With God and Google, we can do anything. And what what is she getting out here? One, you know, where is our North Star? What’s our compass, you know, in for many of us, and many of my listeners,

it’s God, like, are we being guided towards the work we’re doing? are we stepping into our calling that he’s called us into. But then even if we are and there’s things we don’t understand, which is going to happen, we’re all going to be pushed out of our comfort zone to learn new things. And I might challenge you to say, I wouldn’t want to live in a way where I wasn’t learning new things, whether that’s in my personal life, my business, doing new things like hay gardening, or I mean, I’ve garden for, maybe it’s canning something new or learning something that I like to learn new things. And I hope you do, because that’s also part of that growth mindset. We always want to be the student, we always want to be the learner. But her point is Google, we can literally search anything at our fingertips, and we can get an online tutorial, we can get a someone that specializes in that we can, you know, read the step by step directions on a website. So we really can find out anything if we’re willing to put in the time, do the research, and then sit down, get comfy and get moving. And if we don’t want to spend the time because you know we’re in it’s a barrier to entry. That’s when we hire professionals, a freelancer or a coach or a stress strategist, something. But I love that. So just remember, with God and Google, you can do anything. And I think that’s so important to remember. It’s basically everything’s at our fingertips, whether that’s, you know, guidance from prayer and scripture, or whether it’s searching Google for how to do something. Number six, we need to automate our businesses. And no, you don’t need to automate everything all at once. That’s overwhelming. Of course, it is. Often, we only need to automate something when it becomes too much to handle the one z two z’s, right. So in other words, if you’re getting a lot of email submissions, or you’re getting, let’s say you have a podcast or something like that, and you have guests, you’re getting a lot of guest submissions. And it’s disorganized. In your email, you can’t keep track of something, that’s a good time to automate that your form goes into, you know, a spreadsheet type program in order to track it, you know, so for instance, in the program, I use Monday, but there’s lots there’s asana and you know, many other ones, the form is filled out, it goes into my, you know, my podcast, guest tracker. And then from there, I get an automated message saying that someone submitted it, or I can just check it every you know, every couple days, I can set it up either way. So that’s a sort of thing. I’m talking about, automate, when it’s necessary to either keep you organized, or when it’s getting too cumbersome, that it’s not working for you. Now, some people love automation. They love process automation. And so they might set it up at the beginning. But if that’s hard for you just do it when it’s needed. Okay. Number seven is simplify. Yes, we need to simplify what we’re doing in our business. And we need to stop feeling all the overwhelm. For us hearing everybody talking about all the tech, the tech tools, the social media platforms, all the changes, because we don’t need it all. As I mentioned it, you know, with less is more or pausing and putting it aside, simplify, truly What’s your top goal, you know, this week or goal or to this, this month, this quarter? Which things are really going to move your business, you know, which ones are your income generating,

you know, activities. And so, let’s look at those. And once again, if you can not do the tech thing right now, if you can not set up the tool, or it’s one that makes a lot of sense to you. Use that. Don’t use a tool because someone else recommends it. If it’s hard for you and it’s confusing. Don’t use it, ask for more recommend patients. For instance, when I start using a new online tool, because I need a new feature, or I am looking for something, I don’t just pick the first one I’ve heard about, I will review it, I will look at their feature list pricing, pros cons. I will then though go and look at the competitors in that space, similar products. So I might look at two to four, I might even look at five. If I see two or three that I really like, I will spend the time to set up a really quick already called it you know, a test a test account or do a couple day little demo, you know, when they let you set up like a demo or trial, I will do it. And I’m not saying you have to do that, right. I like this kind of work it for me it comes easy. I’m really quick to decide what the features are. And if it makes sense. But I can tell you, I’ve reviewed so many tools over the last 20 years I’ve looked at so many different programs. I’ve years ago, you know, my company built kids in word game apps for iPhone, and we’ve done all different things. So I’ve been in, you know, I’ve been looking at websites or building my own companies, websites, I mean, with with a group for, you know, off and on for 20 years. So this comes easy to me now. So ask people like me, which ones do we recommend? Why? What would I like about it? Because I’m still just like you probably looking for two tools that are intuitive. They’re easy to use without me having to jump through hoops or look, watch 10 tutorials for the basic setup. Sometimes we’re all going to have to watch a tutorial to learn something super specific we want to know. But often I’m looking for tools that from day one, the first 10 minutes I’m using it, I can figure it out at least some parts of it. And I’m sure that’s what you want to. So keep it simple. Only use the tools or setups that you need. Even with your website, you don’t have to start with all the bells and whistles or in all the things and actually you can start your business without a website. Although I would recommend you quickly get it up. For those of us with websites. Yes, you want the core pages to look good. You want it to look professional, you want people to be able to reach out to you to know what to do, which we’ll dig into all this later on other episodes. But you always can build upon what you start, right. And so even when I launched my podcast, and now I’ve rebranded it and launched it, I keep iterating, right. I keep tweaking, I keep changing. But when I first launched my website, I didn’t have a lot of time, that was last year. And it was a different podcast a different focus at the time as I kept niching down to what I’m doing now, which was what I was doing, actually 15 years ago. But my point is, keep it simple. Keep a list and then you can always come back and do it and get recommendations from from other people. And check out like a demo or their walkthrough. It’s hard for you and it doesn’t make sense, there might be another tool that’s easier. So don’t just go with the default or the one that everybody tells you, it might not be a fit for you. Right, we all see things differently. Some of us are more visual, some of us are more, you no need to read things or some need to see like videos of things. So once again, keep it simple. And there’s always more than one solution. Or as basic as say like more than one way to skin a cat which sounds kind of terrible, but I think you get the point. So that’s it for today. But let me go through the seven things again, it’s you are capable, you are capable of all the tech stuff as you need it doesn’t have to be hard is number two. Number three, pause or put aside the things that aren’t urgent for you to do right now.

For start building your tech Dream Team Five with God and Google we can do anything as Ali Worthington says, Six automate in your business when you need more organization or it’s getting beyond your capability to keep up with seven. Keep it simple, right and actually, that’s where the idea of kiss like even websites like wiziwig, which meant What You See Is What You Get tools like the website builder tools, it used to be like a kiss it keep it simple, stupid it like in other words, it was big, easy for anyone to understand. Okay, so keep your business. Keep your tools, your processes in what you’re working on right now simple. You can always add more, you can always improve. You can always get help on a certain thing. But let’s focus on the here and now and what you actually need. When we’re talking about tech, our website, our email lists all of it start slow start simple. You can always manually add an email if you’re only You know, collecting one or two or a couple a day or a week. As that gets bigger, you know, and you have more momentum, then you’re going to need a system or a process. But start out easy start with what works for you. And you can grasp okay. And I just want to leave you with one last thing. I’m going to share an excerpt from Mary Moran’s his book, slow growth equals strong roots, she has a prayer near the end of the book, I’m just going to share a portion of it. It’s called slow growth prayer, because I think so many of us, especially those of us that are feeling on Cape the incapable of doing the tech of, you know, being capable of so many things that were pushed to learn in our business might be feeling, she says, There’s nothing left for us in our before. Only striving and spinning and achieving. We’re not going back. As we stand before you at last exhausted from all this running from our own stories. We hand it all over to you, God, every good gift turned around and given right back to you. The use of my gifts in service to others for the rest of my life, for your ultimate glory. That’s it. I have my mission. Now, I know my assignment, there are no more tightropes for me to walk, no more mass performances, no more splitting, the differences of being tethered to you and tethered to life lived only for myself, I’m calling God. Finally I can see all the places where the light gets in. And in this moment, I decide this is a story I’ll tell you, you know, and basically she’s talking about, you know, where she’s been our life, the businesses she’s created in the past, she has written other, you know, at least one other book I know of, and just trying to always, you know, be more to always perform to always be a perfectionist. And during a slow season, when she finally kind of came to this realization and acceptance that she didn’t have to try, right that we already all are everything that you know, we’re meant to be. And so her books about finding grace and freedom and purpose and an overachieving world, it’s actually a lovely book. And I highly recommend it. But I thought that’s so true for today. If we can just show up and share our story, show our you know, abilities, help others and service and just keep you know, asking for that direction from God. All the other things will work out who should help us the tech? Which things do we really need to work that feel most aligned with our business, with our customers, and with the life we’re trying to build? So just stay steady? Slow down a little bit. And don’t worry so much about the tech and all the little details? Because they will get worked out for you, I promise. And there’s always someone to help you totally. And so many of us are here, ready to answer your question. And if you need more help, there’s plenty of mentors and strategists to help you in a more in depth way. Coming up next week, we will jump into part two of the six part series. And we’re going to dig into how do you set up your website for you know, SEO basics and your meta and your images and your titles to really supercharge your website to get it ready. You know, it’s kind of like if you were redoing your lawn, it’s like we’re going to get the roots ready, we’re

going to get the soil conditioned. And then we’re going to kind of, you know, graded out that is what we’re going to dig into next week. It’s like, what are the roots, we need to fix those and a lot of it has to do with the words we use how where we put them how we put them. And these are steps that you can use. From now on in any website you have for your businesses, which is amazing, literally the principles I’m going to teach you each week. There’s so evergreen, that all of these things I was teaching businesses 15 plus years ago, I used in my own business, a family fun website called ziggity zoom, to build our audience over time cumulatively to over 10 million users. And to over 40,000 page, I’m sorry, 40 million page views. And it was all organic tactics that we did ourselves on our own. And while most of our sites aren’t going to be a content site, so we’re not expecting those kind of numbers, you will see growth by the tips I’m going to tell you and all of these are things you can apply yourself where you can get someone to help you if it’s not something you’re comfortable with. But next week is going to be the roots. How do we get the roots of your website the you know, the framework set up properly. And then over time as you add new pages or more content, you’ll keep applying these same things. Okay. So the amazing thing is, and yes, do certain things change where these things get tweaked because of algorithms or changes to different sites, of course, but the the framework, the core guts of all this is the same, you know, so yeah, I’ll update this right each time A year or two years with some of the new info. But overall, it’s still very similar to even 15 years ago, which is amazing to me because most things change so much, especially online. But in this case, so many things are actually the same. So until next time, I can’t wait to see you have a beautiful weekend.

  • 6 Ways to Find Your Passion & Enthusiasm in Your Business After Burn Out

On today’s episode I talk about why you might be walking through a season of burn out, frustration, lack of clarity or frustration in your business. I share 6 reasons why this might be happening in your current season and what you can do about it to feel excited, passionate and focused in your business again.

On today’s episode, we are going to talk about why you might feel burnt out. What do you do about it to step back into your passion and your purpose, we’re going to talk about why you need to really own your gifts and your expertise so that you can find that passion and purpose in your business. And I want to start by just sharing a quote by Bob Gough with you from his book undistracted. He says, if you hear a voice over your shoulder, talking about your biggest failure, and it isn’t calling you, beloved, it isn’t Jesus talking. That is so good. So we’re going to talk about that today. We’re going to jump all in. And I’m hope that this episode will leave you feeling fulfilled, and renewed and just inspire you to make some small shifts in your day that I think will make a big impact in how you approach your business.

Today’s episode, we’re going to talk about why we might feel burned out why we might not be feeling passionate and enthusiastic about our businesses. I don’t know if this is the place you’ve been maybe you’ve walked through the season, maybe you’re currently walking through the season, season, overwhelm a season of not feeling clear on your business, maybe a season of feeling like you’re spinning your wheels, and you’re not getting the results you want. Well, I can tell you a friend, I’ve been there. Actually, I’ve been walking through the season for the last couple of months. It’s just been a hard time, there’s been things going on with my young adult or college aged kids and high school kids. My dad has injured himself twice, you know fractured pelvises and things like that. There’s just so much going on in the world, I’m building up this new business that I’ve started, I’ve pivoted my business, and I’m rebranding the website and how I work with people. So it’s been a lot. And there’s been certain weeks in days, where I feel like I’m trying to force myself to work more. And yet my results literally become, you know, almost like I got nothing done that day. And so I’ve really had to take a pause and think about what’s really going on here. What is God trying to tell me? In what do I need to do different so that I can continue through this season, be productive, be restful, and also feel like I am continuing in on my purpose without exhausting myself? So we’re going to talk about six ways, in areas that you may not realize are things you need to be acknowledging, and then maybe how you need to do something different. So here we go. The first is, are maybe you aren’t focusing on your top three big business goals? In other words, are you stuck in the weeds? Are you getting so busy in the daily to do that you really can’t see the trees right in the forest, you just see all of it instead of kind of where you’re going beyond that forest. And I have been, you know, here too, I have days or weeks where I do I get I get busy on the to do list instead of thinking strategically or at a higher level and say, which of these things are the most important to get me to my goal for the week, the month, the quarter? And so sometimes I get stuck in the busy and instead of saying, is this the most important work I can do right now? Can I have someone to help me with it? What would happen if I didn’t do some of these things on my to do list? Okay, so that’s the first thing I want you to consider. Are you focused more on your to do list on all the little things instead of constantly looking at? What are your top three goals? And what activities are you doing? What business activities are you doing that are helping you reach those goals sooner? So that’s the first area where I think we can feel burnt out, because

we’re doing a lot of work, and we’re not seeing the impact of the results we should be. And that’s huge. When you feel like you’re working all the time, or at least the hours you have to work. And you don’t see the impact or the financial increase that you’d like to see, if it makes us feel like what are we doing? Is it worth it? Is this actually going to grow into a more substantial business. And so you know, if this is a hard area for you, one I like to do a daily, it’s like a priority sheet of what I’m supposed to be working on. And then what my goals are, overall, it has lots of other things on it, and I have that on my website. The other thing is, is if you’re not working with either a coach to help you with these, you know, to build your business sooner, or you’re not in a group, it can be a paid mastermind, it could be just have a group of several of you that are kind of building something that you you check in regularly, it could be weekly, it could be bi weekly, and you kind of keep each other accountable for what you’re working on. And if you’re actually hitting your goals. The next thing is why we can feel burned out or not feel as passionate about our business as enthusiastic is, we are working too much, we’re working too hard. Once again, maybe we’re not getting the results we want, maybe we aren’t getting the results we want. But we’re we’re burning the you know, the wick or the candle at both ends. And then we wonder why we don’t have the mental bandwidth to do more or to even feel like we’re pumped up about our business. It’s because we’re working too much, instead of working smarter, and doing those strategic things. Alright, the next thing is, sometimes we’re in a season where we need to rest more whether it’s because we physically have gone through something, you know, with our bodies, or we’ve been sick, it could be that we mentally emotionally, are worn out because of the season we’re in, but either ourselves or the people around us the people we care for and the people we love. So maybe we’re pushing too hard, or pushing our bodies or minds too hard in a season where we need to fit in more rest during the day. And maybe during that week or month. I’ve had this happen. There were weeks, in the last two or three months where I sat at my desk, and I was I was determined, you know, to get certain work done. And then I would notice three hours passed. And I didn’t have much to show for it, you know, and I thought what is going on here, I just didn’t have the bandwidth and have the mental space or energy to do that much work. And so what I had to do is I had to kind of give myself that grace, to say, You know what, it’s okay. It’s okay that some days, I’m not going to get done what I want. And instead I need to go out back, maybe work in the garden, take a walk, do something to let my mind in my mental space kind of clear. Let my body relax or rest. So that when I do show back up and do the work, and feel like I’m able to, I’m ready. Now some days, that can be that it’s you know, you show up the next day, and maybe you’re still not ready. You know, if you work for yourself, and even if you don’t, there’s seasons that all of us have gotten lots done and their seasons are days where maybe we don’t. And I’m certainly not saying you won’t get anything done. I’m just saying it may be that you get a good two hours of work done and that the other hours, you really can’t do some of that work.

But we need to listen to our bodies, when we need to rest. Okay, that physical and that mental wall, if you will, those are indicators for us to listen to our bodies. And if we don’t do it, we really can end up you know, more unwell, you know, either we start feeling sick, or maybe then it goes on longer because we don’t address it, you know, we’re not caring for ourselves properly. Okay, number four is we aren’t spending time in prayer. We’re not getting quiet enough. We’re not making time to hear God. And of course, you may not be somebody that aligns in your faith where I do but of course for me, this is so important for you. It might be meditation, it might be something else. But for me, it’s I need to spend time in prayer. I need to read scripture, I need to have quiet time. And I’m need to make time to try to hear God not just to pray to Him. When I do this, my day is better. My business efforts are better. They’re more aligned with how I believe God wants me to show up in the world and in my business. But sometimes we get busy and for some of us this can get put to the side, or we can notice that we’re not doing it as often as we were. I am going through a time Right now were tired in the morning. So I’m getting woken up early by the dog and other things, that usually isn’t the case, my husband gets up earlier than me. So then I’m falling back asleep. And I’m, I’m realizing when I get up, I’m tired. And so my schedule is a little less set right now in the mornings. In other words, I’m getting up at a little bit different times right now in the morning, still feeling tired, not super pumped, right when I get up, and I’m not fitting in that morning time that I usually did at the same time before I would usually do it first thing. But I know there’s an impact on me when I don’t do this. And so for me, it has to be getting back to that being a priority and getting on my calendar. Even if I don’t get up the exact same time every day it needs to be if it’s for me, it’s like the first thing or within the first 30 minutes of getting up. So are you finding time for prayer? Are you finding time to get quiet, to get outside to really take in, you know, big nature and just the the beauty of everywhere and to hear God? I think it’s just so important, you know, in our in our lives, you know, in our relationships, but also in our businesses. Next is we don’t have community around us, that can help support us, they can help guide us give us their advice on how we’re stepping into our business, how we’re growing our business, and maybe where we’re stuck. And I’ve had this happen before I’ve been, I have lots of friends, lots of different groups I’m in. But when it comes to growing my business, locally, I don’t have a lot of friends are doing the same exact thing I’m doing, especially that I’ve worked in online for so long. But I do now have friends in the online space, that I’m part of different groups. I’ve made friendships through people I’ve interviewed and through different programs or masterminds I’ve been in. So over the last, especially two years, I’ve really started to grow and surround myself with more female entrepreneurs, more faith led entrepreneurs, who I have regular, you know, calls and conversations with that we’re lifting each other up. We’re praying for each other, we are helping each other and sharing advice, getting feedback from each other. And you know, talking through those hard seasons are those decisions of those pivots. And I can tell you, it makes all the difference if you don’t have that, keep seeking it, ask other people where have you found that reach out to me, I’m happy to share with you places that I’ve found some of those women and I have also a group of women that I work with, and you know, in that way as well.

It’s made all the difference though, for me as I’m growing this new business. And then number six is sometimes we aren’t showing showing up fully ourselves. We don’t see how our gifts and our ability or our experience can bless and help others in our businesses and in our communities. And I’ve been here I’ve worked in the online marketing space for a very long time. I’ve worked with different companies. I’ve, you know, had my own company. And I do again, of course. But I noticed a couple years ago, I was trying to fit in more than I was just fully being myself all the time. I mean, on my hand moving kind of, you know, open mouth laughing, you know kind of person, I can be loud sometimes. But I can be quiet too. I love Christmas inspiration. But I found that I was trying to fit my business in years ago. This is the family fun business. I started with my mom, and 2008. And when I’ve been in tech, I tried to fit in with the people around me more than trying to stand out as who God made me to be in my unique and special way. So now of course I’m helping people and I am trying to show up with the things the experience I’ve had that other people don’t know, help them in that way in their business. I’m trying to make sure I incorporate my quirkiness and my gifts and my ability in my business in my program. You know what, when I show up coaching and in doing consulting with people, but when we’re not showing up fully ourselves, it doesn’t feel authentic. And it’s harder because we’re trying to fit a mold when we’ve been made unique, right? We don’t fit a mold that matches anyone else. Just like our fingerprint is unique to only us. And I heard also recently our heartbeats are a unique signature. I had no idea I don’t even to me, that is a miracle, right? How did God make each one of us not only to have a unique fingerprint, but a unique heartbeat. They literally said you can identify someone by their heartbeat, which to me is wow. I mean how amazing but so when you find that you’re not fully showing up yourself. What you can do is Try to realize like, where is it that you sound? Maybe more formal than you would usually talk? And where can you make those tweaks on your website or on your podcast or in your emails to people? So, look at that, you know, are you? Are you speaking how you want to the people around you? Are you using the language? Are you giving yourself credit for the many years of experience and what you’ve figured out what you’ve learned that other people want to learn from you, this does not have to be in a formal job, you could be a stay at home mom, and you have mastered scheduling your family, you’ve mastered budgeting, it can be that you worked in marketing for 20 years. And now you’ve learned how to take that information and help people in your niche. There’s so many things we don’t give ourselves credit for. And I would say to you that it’s when we show up and realize our gifts, when we show up and realize that the experience that we have, and how these things come together, right? It’s an intersection, our gifts and our ability, our experience and our personalities. When that comes together, it’s truly we basically become a magnet to other people. But we have to acknowledge all those things and how they come together. And I am going to do a future episode on that, you know, how do we get clear on these different things? And how do we bring them together, so that it’s literally like a magnet out to the people that we can help. And so that’s the sixth thing. So like I said, I think sometimes we don’t feel passionate, we don’t feel enthusiasm in our business, because these different things are going on. And we’re not acknowledging that this is what’s happening, you know that we’re working to mold pushing too hard. We’re not really giving ourselves credit, we’re not owning our gifts, we’re not owning our expertise that unique from other people’s. And so let me just go back through the six things for you. So that you can, you know, note these first is, it could be that you’re not focusing on your top business goals. And instead you’re focused on all the little tiny to dues, or you’re spinning your wheels on something that maybe you need to farm out, because it’s taking you way too long to work on it. And it’s it’s sucking all your mental energy to put towards this thing, instead of working on the big goals. Next is you’re working too much without having the results or the impact that you think you should. And so it makes you feel burned out.

Three, you’re pushing too hard, and you’re ignoring your body’s need to rest. So what I would say is you need to check in with yourself each day and then assess that with your deadlines with your goals. Where can you take a break when it’s needed? And then when can you plan ahead? To actually rest before you feel that that worn out feeling? For we aren’t spending time in prayer, we’re not getting quiet enough. You know? And so it’s how can you make this more of a priority? How can you find time for prayer for scripture or for meditation? Five, do you have people around you, that are helping you through your your business decisions through your life, you know what’s going on in your life? Do you have people around you that are supporting you in what you’re doing, that also can get what you’re saying, because they’re going through similar steps in their own business and where they’re at. Number six is you’re not giving yourself credit, for your experience and for your gifts. So you’re not truly acknowledging or, you know, really embracing all those things that you’ve been given in order to step in the world and serve, but also to, you know, make a living, if that’s what you’re called to do, to, you know, both support your family or help support your family. And then also, you know, it will also further the kingdom, if you will, because you will be able to impact it with your income, you know, and however you feel that you’ve been called to do that. So those are the six ways we can feel burnout, it’s why we might feel like we’re lacking some passion, or some focus or some enthusiasm. And I would just say to you, if you can work on these six things, and for some of you, it might be one, for some of you, it might be two things for others of us, we might need to work on all these things at different times. So, you know, on my daily schedule are priorities. I have different blocks, like what are you thankful for today? You know, have I done healthy things you and I go on a walk?

Did I connect, you know, in a relationship, you know, did I reach out to somebody to tell them I appreciate them. So besides my business goals and priority, there’s areas to make sure holistically I’m approaching my day so that I will I will feel you know, grateful and I will get healthy things In, you know, mentally and physically, it has a space for scripture or a quote. So that helps me stay grounded in my day in sort of focusing around everything, not just those goals. But the goals helped me stay on track in my business. And there’s days where I don’t feel that out. And I can promise you, on some of those days, I realized that I get stuck in the weeds. And I don’t get those big. I don’t move the poll towards those big bigger goals for the week, the month in the quarter. So I’d love to hear from you. What are you doing that’s helping you step out of maybe a season of feeling frustrated or burnt out or unmotivated, so that you can feel passionate and enthusiastic again, I would love to hear from you. So DM me on Instagram, you can leave me a audio message on my website. It’s on the side of the website. It’s just like a little bar that says message me. I would love to hear from you. So check that out. And until next time, I hope you have a wonderful and beautiful week.

  • When is it Time to Hire Help or Outsource

What Questions to Ask before Hiring Help or Working with a Virtual Assistant (VA)

On today’s episode we’re going to talk about when is the right time to hire help, whether that’s a VA, or hiring someone like an SEO coach, or someone to help you with ads, whatever the thing is, we’re going to talk about when you should and when you shouldn’t hire someone to help you, too beautiful friend,

Okay, let’s dive right in. In Why am I talking about today? Why is it so important? Well, I’ll tell you a couple of reasons. First of all, I do have people ask me things like when should I hire a VA or I’m thinking about hiring help. And that’s the first reason I want to talk about this today.

But the second is even way back when I was helping people with their online presence, you know, over 15 years ago, the people I was working with would be approached all the time by either an SEO company or an advertising company, or some other company trying to sell them something. And of course, the it would sound great, like, hey, we can help you get more leads, we can help you, you know, get traffic or whatever they were offering.

The issue was in my clients just you know, didn’t really think about this is why would you hire someone to help you if you don’t know what your baseline is, if you don’t know what your baseline is, how do you know if the money you’re putting forth, or the person helping you is actually helping you achieve your goal, right, or your business measurements, you know, improving that. That is why this is so important. And that’s why we’re going to talk about when you should and when you shouldn’t hire professional help, to specialize to help you grow or to help take on some of your workload. So here we go.

Okay, first, let’s talk about when you shouldn’t hire help, at least not long term help. The first is if you have a problem with your business, then you need to understand what the problem is, and how it can be fixed. Now, obviously, if you can’t fix it on your own, I’m not saying gets don’t get someone to help you. But you’ve got to understand where you have an issue. And then you have to understand truly how it gets fixed. Even if you don’t actually do the work yourself. That’s the first thing. The next is you can’t outsource something or handed off if you don’t know how to do it yourself. Or you don’t know how to do it yourself.

And it’s not so clear that you can very specifically articulate what it is you want from the person. Because if we can’t, step by step, explain to them our expectations of what they need to do. It’s not going to work out and we’re going to be frustrated. And so as the person we’re trying to work with, because we have failed to super clearly in really simple terms, give them examples of what we want, how we want it when we want it and make sure that that aligns with how they can help us. That’s the second thing. The next is to how many people try to get help before they actually know their numbers before they know their measurements.

And this is just a slippery slope. Because how do you know how much they helped you if you don’t even know your your numbers. And so today for this example, about the numbers I’ll explain regarding your website. And so here’s often what happens. Someone has a website.

Obviously, most people if your site’s been around for a little bit, and there’s some content, you’re getting traffic, right? Someone is finding your site or you’re telling people about it, or it’s in your emails for people are clicking on your website. Well, that is obviously a metric that you’d want to know how many people are coming to your website, from where and then how many people are signing up for something that you offer, right. So this can be an email lead. This could be they’re calling you on the phone, but they’re signing up for a program where maybe a free group or community you have but we have to track those numbers. Because if you ever want to grow that and you’re at that point where you actually want to spend money growing it not just doing it gimmick, you know, tactics or strategies to help you.

You want to know what your baseline is? And then where are you trying to get in? Does it make sense for the money that someone’s you know, what program? Or what service they’re offering you? Does that make sense to have it aligned with what you want and where you’re at in your business? So it’s so important that you understand that.

The next is, are you consistently having that extra work? Or that it’s an area that you just can’t fit in doing? But it’s integral to your business? Meaning, are you consistently not able to do the work or you’re just, you’ve grown enough, and you have consistent growth, where it makes sense financially, but also from a workload perspective, to have someone help you? So that’s the other thing that people need to look at it. Sometimes we don’t, we just feel busy. We feel like we’re overwhelmed. But often, that is a different struggle or challenge that we have to work through. Because if it’s not really about growth, right, like maybe our revenues aren’t where we want them to be yet. We’re thinking of hiring someone, and I’ve been there, just, you know, truth bomb 100%. I’ve been there. I’ve had those times where I feel overwhelmed.

And I think, is it because I need help as I get a little bit bigger. But sometimes it’s because I wasn’t super clear on my priorities in what work had to get done. What was mission critical? And what work could be put on the backburner that wasn’t really mission critical to what I was trying to accomplish at that time. So often, it’s because in our minds, we think, oh, gosh, wouldn’t it be so nice if I had help? But before we get help, we just need to reflect and decide, are we? Are we overwhelmed and too busy? Because we’re not prioritizing, and we’re not doing the most important work in instead? Are we doing busy work?

So important to make that differentiation? And sometimes you might need someone else to help you look at that, you know, look at your schedule for the week, what are you working on? What are your goals, or if you don’t have goals, yet are not real clear goals, maybe you need help with getting those kind of nailed down, you know, maybe you need to work with someone, you know, a consultant or a coach or, you know, some sort of expert in that area, you know, whatever your area is. So it’s just super important, though, that we really look at each of these things before we jump into working with a virtual assistant, or hiring a specialist to help us with something, whether it’s to grow our, you know, our audience, or whether it’s to grow maybe an Instagram following. Maybe it’s to get a

publicist, or somebody to help us with PR. Once again, before we do that, what are our goals? And what are we already hitting now? Or are we going from never submitting, you know, like pitches to media or podcasts, but then we’re going to hire somebody to do PR for us. But we have no baseline like we’ve never tried it ourselves. We just think, Gosh, I need help here. There’s two challenges there. The first is, it’s expensive to work with a PR person. So if you don’t have a budget for that right now, then it’s costly. And so the question is, could you do it on your own? Do you have two hours a week or a couple hours a week, or even a handful of hours a month? To work on? You know, putting your stuff out there to people? Or who else could you use, that’s maybe not a full publicity firm, a PR firm. And so there’s always good alternatives to write, there’s this, there’s been around for many, many years now. Right? A freelance market. And so you can go on places like Fiverr, or Upwork, and lots of other ones, and find somebody to help you with on a project basis. Right.

And so that’s always a great thing to to try is don’t commit to some long term, you know, three months, six months, 12 month program, until you’re sure that’s really what you want to do. typed it out, maybe with somebody that will just work on a project with you. The next thing is, that’s what I always say is do a test with somebody, you know, before you commit two months in lots of money to work with somebody, do a test, you know, and obviously, like a paid test, like, just say, like, Hey, can I just have you work on this one thing for me, and like, let’s just see how it goes, you know, if this is a fit. The next thing is, until you’re sure that the the thing you’re going to do is what you want to do. Don’t sign that long term agreement initially.

Make sure there’s a fit. So whether that’s doing phone calls or doing that test, or making sure what is the cause? Can you get out of it if you’re unhappy with the quality of the work or the profit or timeliness of it? But you need to be really careful that you understand what are the terms to which you’re signing. So if you’re signing a six month you know deal with somebody, either a VA or like I said, a PR person or anyone what you know? And when what case can you cancel it is it a cancelled anytime as long as you give 15 days notice or 30 days notice. It’s so important though. And so I don’t think you should just jump in to working with a professional working with someone to help you until you really understand these things. Let’s review. If you have a problem, you need to learn how to fix it first. And you need to know how to deal with that thing before you hire somebody at least long term. If you’re going to outsource or hire company to help you in a specialized way, you need to learn how to do the thing yourself before you hand it off. Because if you want them to do a great job, you need to be clear on what it is you want them to do for you. You have to know next is you have to know your numbers. What are your metrics are your measurements, which What’s your baseline?

You have to know that because you don’t want to start some giving someone money and think, Oh, they’re doing a great job, but you really had no idea how it was going on your own if you weren’t measuring metrics or numbers or indicators. The next is do you really need help? Do you need, you know help let’s on a monthly or weekly basis? Or do you feel overwhelmed because you haven’t set clear, reasonable priorities? Next is are you experiencing consistent growth? Where you know, it makes sense to spend that money on another person to help you? And then can you do a test? Or if you can’t do a test, can you shine sign a shorter duration agreement or ensure that you can get out of the agreement? If it’s not going well for you if you’re not satisfied with the work or the results you’re getting? And what sort of timeframe does that look like? And so

I think this is so important, because like I said before I’ve been here, there have been times where I thought, oh my gosh, I’m so busy, I could really hire somebody to help me with this. But often it’s because I was spending too much time on things that didn’t matter. They weren’t mission critical. And when I eliminated some of those other things, if you will busy work or work that was distracting me from my primary, you know, top three goals, I had more time. And surely that doesn’t mean that you don’t get to a stage where you do hire people to help you whether they’re contractors or whether they’re freelancers or whether you have employees. But we need to make sure we’re at that point before we get that help. So reach out I’d love to hear if you’ve if you already work with people that help you and if you do it what point did you hire those people? If you’re not quite there, but you’ve been wondering about this? What other questions do you have? And how else can I help you answer this question about when do you get help? Until next time, I hope you have a great week.
