Hey, and welcome back to Tackling the tech.
Host:Today we're going to talk about five things you didn't know you could do with your iPhone.
Host:For many of us, some of these things are frustrating and we don't even realize we can use our iPhone for these things or to make these changes or for an emergency.
Host:So I can't wait to share them with you.
Host:And yes, today's episode is specifically for iPhone users.
Host:Some episodes will be for iPhone and Android users and some will be for different, you know, for iPhone only and some for Android only.
Host:So today is for the iPhone users only.
Host:Sorry to tell you.
Host:All right, so we're going to dive in.
Host:Just so you know what we're going to cover.
Host:We're going to talk about what you can do with your notes app, how you can actually copy text from things like being at a presentation.
Host:We're going to talk about how when you take bad photos, you can actually correct that.
Host:We're going to talk about emergency situations, and then we're going to talk about recording on your phone and also changing the text size of the text on your phone.
Kristen Fitch:Hey there, friends.
Kristen Fitch:Welcome to Tackling the Tech, the show for all of us who don't consider ourselves tech geniuses.
Kristen Fitch:I'm your host, Kristen Fitch, a tech savvy guide with 20 years of experience making tech simple and helping you master it with ease.
Kristen Fitch:Each week, I'll guide you through simple tips, tools and tricks to master your gadgets, apps, and even AI without all the confusing jargon.
Kristen Fitch:Organizing your phone and conquering Gmail to using AI tools that save you hours.
Kristen Fitch:We're here to help your tech work for you so you can spend more time doing what you love.
Kristen Fitch:So grab your coffee, your devices, and let's tackle your tech together because you've got this.
Host:Okay, so the format of these audio demos is that I'm going to basically walk you through where to go on your phone, what the benefits are.
Host:You know, how you can use it for different things, and then, you know, I'll go back and repeat the steps just so that you can follow along.
Host:All right, so the first thing that I want to share with you that many of you may not know is that if you have an iPhone, you have a notes app.
Host:You may be someone like me who uses it every day.
Host:I have hundreds of notes.
Host:Or you may somebody be someone who's never used it before.
Host:Well, if you have your iPhone and you know where your notes app is, it just looks.
Host:It has a yellow bar and then three pieces.
Host:It looks like Three lined lines of a paper.
Host:You're going to click into that.
Host:If you're not sure where, where it is at the top of your iPhone, where it says app library, you can do search box search.
Host:Notes, you know, come up and you just open it.
Host:Okay, we want to go into our notes app.
Host:Once you're in there, you want to create a new note, or if you already have an existing note, that works.
Host:I'm sorry, in this case, you want to create a new note in how you do that is at the bottom of your notes app, there's a tiny icon on the right that looks like a little square with a pencil in it.
Host:Click on that.
Host:Okay.
Host:And then from here, what we're going to do is show you how you can scan documents right in this app without another scanning app or with having to use an actual printer scanner combo.
Host:Because let's be honest, most of us probably don't scan that often, unless maybe we work at a legal office.
Host:All right, so what you're going to do is grab a piece of paper and you're going to take.
Host:You're going to go into your notes, and at the bottom of it, there are four or five icons.
Host:There's letter icons, there's checklist tables, and then there's a camera icon.
Host:We're going to click the camera icon.
Host:So when you click that, it gives you some choices.
Host:One of them is scan documents.
Host:So you're going to click that.
Host:And when you do, what you're going to do is you're going to set up a piece of paper you want to scan, or you might have multiple pieces of paper.
Host:That's the same document.
Host:You're going to put your phone above the document, make sure you have the whole, you know, paper or document in your view, and then you're going to take a picture of it.
Host:Okay, I'm going to do that right now.
Host:Just so that we're on the same page here.
Host:Okay.
Host:And then when you take the photo, it says keep scan.
Host:And if you have a multi page file, then it says, would you like to take another photo?
Host:And then you keep doing that until you're done with your pages.
Host:So I just took three scans.
Host:And what you're going to do, Whether it's a one page document you wanted to scan or a 10 page, keep taking the photos in order of the pages.
Host:And when you're done, there is an icon beside the photo where you click the photo in the middle, there's a.
Host:I'm sorry, there's a bubble on the right that says save how many ever photos you took or pages.
Host:So you click on that when you're ready, when you're done with the pages that you want to scan.
Host:And once you do that, it will then pull up your scanned documents in order.
Host:You can scroll through them and then from there you can rename it.
Host:So right now mine just says scan documents.
Host:So on the top of that there's a little arrow right beside that word Scan documents.
Host:If you click it almost near the bottom of the choices says rename.
Host:You can rename the documents or the scanned images to whatever you want to call it.
Host:It could be Kristin's legal changes, 20, 24, whatever you want to call it.
Host:Okay, so when you're done with that, then what you're going to do is you're going to go to the top of your Notes app in this, in this scan document and click the box with the arrow facing upwards.
Host:And when you do that, it's going to let you send these scanned documents.
Host:It'll be one document, you know, it'll be put together.
Host:And what I do is I usually send it via Gmail that you can send it via mail.
Host:You could even try sending it via message.
Host:But I usually email it to myself or other people.
Host:So from here I would click Gmail, I would type in who it's going to and like I said, normally I send it to myself first just so I have a copy of it and then I can forward it on to anyone else.
Host:So I type in my email address or whoever you need to enter the subject.
Host:So I'm putting Kristen's scans just because I want to test this and then hit Send.
Host:And then you'll have in your inbox that set of scanned documents as one PDF.
Host:Basically it'll combine the documents for you.
Host:So if you have a five page document and it will save it as one PDF for you, so it does so much work for you and you can use your Notes app to do all of that.
Host:So if you haven't been using this, the Notes app, to scan your documents, it is a powerful feature that will save you time and frustration.
Host:The next thing that I want to let you know that you might not be using Notes for is if you go into your Notes and you create another note.
Host:So that's the bottom right hand side of the Notes app.
Host:There's a little square with a pencil icon.
Host:You click it for a new note.
Host:And if you want to create a checklist, all you have to do is start typing in either things you need at the store.
Host:Or maybe it's things you want to accomplish today or this week.
Host:So I'm just going to put in a grocery list, just as my example.
Host:Okay.
Host:So I'm just typing in a couple things on each line.
Host:So each line I'm typing in a different item.
Host:And what you're going to do is at the bottom of your note, there's those graphics at the bottom again.
Host:So there's the text size, and the next one is it shows two circles with lines and a check mark.
Host:That's the checklist.
Host:So click that.
Host:Okay, let me just tell you the best way to do it.
Host:So what you want to do is you can either type your list first and then you can hit that checklist icon.
Host:But if you're going to do that, what you need to do is highlight all the copy that you want to have checklists for or check circles, or you can do a check bubble and then write your words in a check bubble.
Host:So you would keep clicking the check checklist.
Host:So what I did is I put in milk, cheese, bread, sour cream, and then I highlighted that text.
Host:And if you're not sure how to highlight, what you do is you hold your finger over some of the text and it will bring up a yellow bar with arrows or arrow or dots.
Host:I'm sorry.
Host:And then you slide your finger over all the text that you want that you're going to make in the checklists, and then you click the checklist button.
Host:What's really cool is as you accomplish your goals or you get things from the grocery store, if you click on those circle bubbles, it will actually show the things checked in a yellow check box.
Host:So how cool is that that you can use your notes app as a checklist feature or function as well?
Host:I love that.
Host:And I think this saves us time and it keeps us organized, and it's already built into our iPhones.
Host:All right, so let's move on.
Host:Next is, some of you may not be using this feature yet, but it's been around for some time.
Host:I mean, for quite some time.
Host:But if you.
Host:Let's say that you're at a conference or you're just out on the street or wherever, and you basically see something that has text in it.
Host:So it could be a slide presentation, it could be a picture, or it could be a sign.
Host:It could even be in a book.
Host:What you do is you take a photo.
Host:So you open your camera app, and if you can't find the camera, so you're going to search camera, you're going to open camera and what you can do is you're going to take a picture of that slide presentation or of the book, the page of the book, or whatever copy that you see.
Host:And then what you can do from there is after you have the photo, you can either in the photo app, you can click the small image or icon of the photo you just took, which is on the left hand, bottom corner right, or to the left of where you take your photo.
Host:You can click the photo open there or you can go into your photos area or.
Host:But either way, you want to see the image that you just took a picture of.
Host:And once you're in that image, there is an icon on the, on top of the photo.
Host:It's in the bottom right hand corner of the image that you just took a picture of.
Host:It looks like an opened square with some lines.
Host:So it's supposed to look like text.
Host:If you click that little icon, it highlights every part of the text on that image, every part of it.
Host:And then what it does is then it also puts a message at the bottom left of your image that says copy all.
Host:And when you do that, you can then go back into your notes.
Host:So open your notes again and select New Note, which is that square icon with a pencil.
Host:And you hold your finger into the note, just hold it there and it will open up.
Host:Paste, autofill, add link, click Paste.
Host:All of your text is then organized into a note.
Host:So you can take information you've learned a passage or a quote in a book that you want to remember, but you don't want to write out all this information.
Host:This does the work for you.
Host:How cool is that?
Host:It's such a time saver.
Host:And so is it going to be perfect?
Host:Not always, but it's going to be 90, you know, 85 to 97% most likely accurate, like what the words are.
Host:You might have to fix it a little bit, but it'll save you a lot of time.
Host:And I'm sure different text has different percentages of accuracy, so you're going to have to just play with this.
Host:The other thing I'd say is if you have handwritten notes, this works for that as well.
Host:You can take pictures of your handwritten notes and then use that copy, you know, or that text button and then copy it into your notes.
Host:So this is a huge, huge time saver and another feature of notes that not everybody knows about.
Host:So check that out.
Host:All right, I want to jump into, let's say that you have pictures.
Host:You've taken pictures of a group and people's eyes are closed.
Host:Well, you can correct that as long as in your iPhone, you're using the live setting.
Host:Okay.
Host:And I don't always like the live setting on, but I like it on because you can move where the.
Host:It has a couple seconds of a photo that was taken, and so you can actually move where it looks at the photo.
Host:So what am I talking about?
Host:So if you.
Host:If you open your photo again, your photo app in the top right hand corner, the furthest icon at the top is a circle.
Host:It's like three circles, but the outer circle is kind of dotted.
Host:That is your live setting.
Host:So if you.
Host:If you don't click it, then it's already on.
Host:If you click it on top of it, it puts a slash line through it, which means it's not live.
Host:So if you have a slash line through yours, you can unclick on top of it and it will get rid of the line and it will show you live for a minute.
Host:Yellow word live will appear when you're live above the photo.
Host:Okay, so let's take a picture and I'll walk you through how you can make your photos always have people's eyes opened or a better smile by using this feature.
Host:I'm going to take a picture just so I can walk through it.
Host:Okay.
Host:And when I took the photo, it popped up above the photo screen, live in yellow.
Host:So that told me that it was taking a live photo.
Host:Okay?
Host:So take your photo and then click into the photo you just took, which is in your photo app on the left hand side, bottom.
Host:Just click that graphic.
Host:Okay.
Host:And you're going to go to.
Host:Actually, it's.
Host:Well, yeah, you're going to go to edit, which if you're in the photo app, is at the bottom underneath the picture.
Host:It's the second thing from the right.
Host:You have the delete and then edit.
Host:Hit edit.
Host:And when you're in here, one of the very.
Host:The bottom icons, the far left bottom icon is live.
Host:I want you to click that.
Host:All right?
Host:And then if you look right above that icon, you just clicked.
Host:It's going to show you your photo.
Host:But it shows all these other segments, if you will, of the picture, much like a video.
Host:Well, what you can do is you move your finger down where you see all these different slides or parts of the picture, and you just move your finger back and forth.
Host:Or you can click, click the arrows actually to move your finger over top.
Host:As you move your finger over top, it'll show you, you know, second or tenths of a second of the video you took, I mean, of the photo you took.
Host:What you need to do is find one, you know, click over top of it that you like.
Host:So if your eyes were closed or someone's eyes were closed in one of them, move your finger over the different options.
Host:And when you find the one you like, it'll pop up after you stop clicking.
Host:It says make key photo.
Host:So you're going to click that text.
Host:When you do that, you're then going to select done in yellow at the very top right of the screen.
Host:Okay.
Host:And what that's going to do is it's now going to make that new photo or that new part of the photo that you picked, your main photo.
Host:That's what you're going to now see in your photos or in the camera app.
Host:So now you have a photo where people's eyes are opened or they're smiling or whatever it might be, but you have the best picture now based on which one you like the most.
Host:That's huge because sometimes you think, great, everyone's eyes were closed, the wind blew at the wrong time.
Host:And so you don't have a good photo.
Host:And sometimes that's so inconvenient.
Host:Actually, it's always inconvenient.
Host:But if you use the live feature and then you go in and edit your app.
Host:I'm sorry, edit your photo in the photo app, then you're able to actually move what main photo point you want to use.
Host:So that's a huge time saver and such a relief, to be honest with you.
Host:Okay, the next thing that I want to talk about is the emergency services on our iPhones.
Host:So what you're going to do is you're going to go into settings and if you're not sure where settings are, then once again go to that search box and type in Settings.
Host:It is a gray icon that looks like a gear or like almost like a steering wheel.
Host:Okay, so we're going to go into that and I should just pause right here.
Host:I should have said this earlier, but if you don't know how to search for apps on your phone, when you're on your main screen, you just swipe your finger from the right hand side corner to the left hand side and it brings up your icons, your apps organized in boxes.
Host:And at the top it has a search magnifying glass with app library.
Host:That's where you click into and you type in whatever app you're looking for.
Host:The ones I've been talking about.
Host:Okay, so back to Settings.
Host:Click on the gray setting icon.
Host:So once you're in there, you're going to scroll down.
Host:It's in the.
Host:Let me just make sure I tell you this right, so at the top you have your name and icloud finishing up your setting.
Host:And then there's the next box has airplane mode to personal hotspot.
Host:We're going to go two boxes below that.
Host:So keep scrolling until you see Emergency SOS and face IDs right above it.
Host:So if you click Emergency SOS, we're going to talk about some of the features that are in here.
Host:But I do want to caveat one of the features I'm going to highlight today, but I'm not going to walk through in depth because I'm going to cover that in another episode.
Host:You have to have your phone updated to the newest operating system.
Host:So not for.
Host:Not for just the basic Emergency sos, but I'll tell you about what, what I meant in a minute.
Host:Okay, so if you're in settings and then you clicked on Emergency sos, I'm going to talk about the top area and then we're going to go through some other things throughout that this page.
Host:So the first thing is by default, if you, or actually you have to hold, you have to have the button on.
Host:So it has to be green, but it either says you can call with hold and release call with five button presses or call quietly.
Host:And what they're saying is that if you do these actions, so either you hold the volume button and then the power button at the same time, if you hold it long enough, it's a couple seconds, then you will have a, you know, your screen that comes up that says slide to power off, cancel medical ID or emergency call.
Host:The emergency call is the SOS Emergency sos.
Host:So if you slid your finger from the sos, that's red on the left to the right, it will then initiate an emergency call for you.
Host:Okay, so that is the default setting in Emergency sos.
Host:But if you don't want that, then you can change it to the next one which says Call with five button presses.
Host:It says if you rapidly press the side button five times, a countdown begins and an alarm will sound.
Host:And the countdown ends.
Host:IPhone will call emergency services.
Host:Or let's say that you're in a situation where you don't know if you know something might be happening and you don't.
Host:Someone don't want someone to know that you're going to try to call emergency services for whatever reason.
Host:Maybe you work somewhere where you don't want to disturb other people.
Host:Maybe you're in a Difficult relationship, you know, that's concerning whatever it might be.
Host:You can.
Host:You can ahead of time have the call quietly on.
Host:And so it won't have an alarm sound or anything else.
Host:It'll just start initiating the call on your behalf.
Host:Okay, so one, I want you to know about this and that you can change those settings.
Host:The next thing is, if you scroll down this page, Emergency SOS page, there is an emergency contacts area.
Host:If you have not put an emergency contact in there, then you definitely should do that.
Host:The good news is, I believe under Emergency Contacts, if no one's listed, you can click right there, edit emergency contacts in health, and you can add the person that you'd want to be your emergency contact.
Host:So definitely do that.
Host:The new feature that I was saying, you have to be your friend has to be updated with the newest update in order to see.
Host:This is called Emergency SOS via Satellite.
Host:And for now, it just has Tridemo, but you should walk through that because it shows you how that would work.
Host:So if an emergency, you do not have cellular service.
Host:So for instance, a lot of people during the hurricane on the East Coast, Hurricane Milton, especially in western North Carolina, their cell towers were not working, and so they had no way to reach out to anyone, no way to contact emergency services.
Host:So if they had the newer version of updated iPhone, then.
Host:I'm sorry, updated iPhone operating system, then they were able to use this feature.
Host:So the demo is something you should definitely click on and then follow the directions, but it will ask you to walk outside because you need a clear view of the sky to get in contact with the satellite.
Host:So you can't do this from in your house usually.
Host:So you'll go outside and it may tell you turn to the right or turn to the left because it needs the best possible clear view and your body doesn't.
Host:We don't want your body to be blocking it.
Host:So test that out, and it will walk through what would happen if you needed to use emergency SOS via satellite.
Host:So we'll cover that in a more detailed episode where I go through what actual operating system you need to have, how it works, and all of that.
Host:But I just want you to be aware of it.
Host:And I just updated my phone to the newest beta version, and now on the.
Host:On my main settings page, in the second box down, it actually says, get help during emergency, and then it says, learn more.
Host:And that was not there prior to me just updating it.
Host:And so they're definitely working on it and giving us more education, which is great.
Host:Okay, so the next thing is, for some of us, we might want to show somebody something on our phone, but we didn't realize that there is a screen recorder on our phone.
Host:And even if you do know that, there is one feature that you may not know how to turn on for that.
Host:So how do you find your screen recorder?
Host:So the first way is that you search in.
Host:Let's see if it'll.
Host:Oops, I typed this wrong.
Host:Hold on, I'm just typing it in.
Host:Oops.
Host:Okay, so you actually have to get to your screen recorder from your Control center, which.
Host:And it may not be on there.
Host:So I'm going to show you how to add or tell you how to add it.
Host:Your control center is when you're on your main screen of your phone or any screen and you swipe the top right hand corner diagonally towards the left.
Host:So it's kind of like a diagonal line.
Host:Swipe with your thumb or finger and what you're going to see is all of these icons that show up, circular icons and then there's a volume and a light icon and things like that.
Host:Well, the, the screen recorder is.
Host:Well, it can be in a different place depending on how many apps you have on your.
Host:What they call.
Host:This is the Control center.
Host:And so the screen recorder is a circle with a white filled in circle icon.
Host:So you're going to click on that icon.
Host:But before I step into that, you may not see that icon because it's not on everyone's control center by default.
Host:I don't think so.
Host:How do we add it?
Host:Well, there's two possible ways you might be able to add it depending on what iPhone operating system you have.
Host:So I'm going to tell you the most recent way first and then I'll go back to the way that was the old way.
Host:So if you're on your Control center screen, you see all these icons and you see the volume up and the brightness up when you're in the right place.
Host:So what you're going to do is underneath all the icons you see on the page, hold your thumb down at the bottom of the page, just on the front of your phone, just hold it there for, you know, a second or a couple seconds.
Host:And what it's going to do is it's going to make each icon and little module on this page, it's going to make it have a, a minus bar, but below it it says add a control.
Host:So you can delete things if you don't want something on here or you can add a control.
Host:So if you don't see the screen recorder graphic that I showed that I mentioned.
Host:That's a circle with a white circle inside of it.
Host:Then you're going to click add Control.
Host:And then from there you can search Recorder.
Host:Let me just see if that's what it's under.
Host:Yes, Recorder.
Host:And then it's under Display and Brightness.
Host:But you can click it.
Host:There's a little icon.
Host:You can click it and it will add it to your page.
Host:Okay.
Host:You can add lots of other things here too, but that's what we want to do.
Host:Now.
Host:If you don't see when you hold your thumb down on that Control center screen, if you don't see out of control, then that's okay.
Host:That means you probably have an older iPhone.
Host:You haven't updated to the newest iPhone offering.
Host:So you want to go back into Settings and then you want to scroll down to the about the third or fourth box.
Host:It's underneath camera, go into Control Center.
Host:And if yours is the older version, then actually on this page you'll see all the different icons or apps that you can add to your Control center screen.
Host:And you can plus or minus those apps.
Host:And if you wanted screen recording, you could add it to your screen from here.
Host:And I do want to take a moment and just mention that I will have some episodes, also video versions of the podcast in the future.
Host:I just wasn't ready to do that today.
Host:And then also I will have on some episodes free downloads, tips or, you know, screenshot graphics of what to do at what I'm talking about for that episode.
Host:So those things are coming in future episodes.
Host:So definitely know that there will be more resources for you.
Host:And I want to share one last thing that you can do things in case you're somebody like me who's no longer 20 years old.
Host:And sometimes you want your phone text to be in the same area, the Control Center.
Host:There is also a graphic or icon where you can change the size of the text throughout everything on your whole phone, which is amazing.
Host:And so if you don't see it in your Control center already, which remember you get to by swiping from the top right hand corner of your screen down diagonally if you don't see it there.
Host:If you have an updated iPhone operating system, then you hold down below all the icons and you do add control and then you just search text and then you can add the text size to your Control Center.
Host:If you don't see this on your Control center and you don't see it won't let you add feature on Your Control center.
Host:Then you're going to go into Settings and then Control center and add the text feature.
Host:What that allows you to do is when you go in, you click the.
Host:There's like a, you know, it's much like the light bar.
Host:You go up and down with text size.
Host:So mine was at 100%.
Host:You can make it bigger.
Host:You can do 125, 150.
Host:So if you're somebody that needs readers or maybe you are visually impaired or whatever it might be, then you can change the font size or the text size of your.
